I would guess Goodwin has said, your standards are sub standard and you are in a rut

Not just Goodwin and not just this season.

No-one's questioning Watts' capability and usefulness. What's being questioned is his attitude, application, and professionalism.

And do you think a player like Dangerfield would ignore those defects if he thought they outweighed Watt's other attributes?

Dangerfield was put on the spot and responding to a question about Jack. He's not exactly going to say he's rubbish is he? Never have I heard a player interviewed, when asked about another player potentially coming to their club, that hasn't wrapped the bloke up.

Dangerfield would have next to no idea what's gone on behind closed doors in relation to Jack's attitude or application, relating to goals set for him by the club....none of us really do!

I agree with the bolded bit.  But Dangerfield even if 'put on the spot' didn't have to be so effusive in support of Watts.  If Watts is possibly going to Geelong you have to presume they value Watts, warts and all.

I don't mind people saying trading Watts for appropriate return is good for the club.  It's the relentless harping on his weaknesses that pisses me off.

if we get pick 20 for watts i'd personally be reasonably pleased - i thought first pick of third round (that the pies got from the bears) or 29 from port was more likely, but it seems like someone will pay up for jack

sad he's got to go, but so be it

Yes we do - we all know, as does Ch 7, Fox Footy, Talking Footy, RSN, Trade Radio

The coach told everyone

What closed doors???

I have two words to remind the coaches about the Watts trade - Jeremy Howe. Nominated in the all Australian squad and likely to pick up the Collingwood B&F. How come Buckley and Co can get this performance out of him and Goodwin and Co felt they needed to trade him? No one doubts Jacks talent. It's a coaches job to get the players to perform. Blaming the player is the softest option available. The coaching department seems incapable of getting the players to perform when it's most needed- witness the hopeless performances against Collingwood and Kangas- at the back end of the season to make the finals. My message to Simon Goodwin is do your job and get the best out of talented players. But then again........"i know nuthingggg"

It's sad the way he's been treated, not his imminent departure

How many flags did Schwarz, Wells, Jakovich & Sylvia win during their careers?

Ox and Jako brought it week in, week out, and adapted to their opponent to find ways to better them. Putting Wells and Sylvia alongside them is just silly. How many flags did Robert Harvey win?

Howe walked away from the club and requested a trade to Collingwood.

It was Roos that first played him in defence and he performed very well down there.  Buckley got him to Collingwood with the promise of playing him forward.  Roos got the best out of Howe and now with three years of playing in defence, he's short listed for All Australian.

What, you mean the guy who doesn't know Watts from a bar of soap?

Yep, the critics here on Demonland would know heaps more than Dangerfield (and Paul Roos).

Am I missing something? Greg Wells was a great player, and I'm not using the term lightly. Putting him in the same category as Sylvia deserves a ban.

I'm pretty sure we low-balled Howe, to force him to leave. Howe's output under Roos was no different to his previous coaches. He was inconsistent, so you can't say that Roos got the best out of him. It was Buckley who was able to get him to play at a comsistent level.

Well if the club is offered a pick somewhere in the 20's and we don't have to pay any of Jack's salary in the next 2 years then Jack will almost certainly be gone.

The above is probably best case scenario from the club's point of view but if the bartering point is scaled back too far then I can see the club keeping Jack on.  I'm wondering what that point might be though?  (e.g ... a late 3rd round pick with the club having to pay a portion of his salary probably won't suffice)

This decision to part company with Jack has probably been discussed at length previously - with Jack not being a participant in those discussions.  Maybe even as far back as the pre-season games this past season.  We're all hearing the news of late as if it is news.

I still maintain that we need greater currency to get the player (or players) that we're chasing or to get better placed draft picks from an overall perspective.  And Jack may or may not give the club a decent return in that capacity.  We'll find out soon enough.

No, Howe himself said Melbourne offered more than Pies. Howe didn't leave for less money though. There was other stuff involved, including bluff and huff.

Try reading what I said before responding.  I said I'd take his opinion over people here.

You also said if the Club said nothing the members would start sending in petitions etc.  Seems that has happened anyway.   Talking-down Watts in public does nothing for the club's culture, possiby the reverse.

But the opinion of people here clearly echoes the opinions of the FD. Dangerfield doesn't know Watts and he's a potential teammate next year, of course he's going to talk him up. Let's be clear Watts obviously has some positive attributes as a footballer and more generally. If he didn't he'd be delisted and it wouldn't be worth talking to other clubs because noone would entertain a trade.

I don't see it as talking down, I see it as being honest. I guess that's where we differ.

Lol I thought he was referring to Daniel Wells. Don't ask me why. Friday.

Howe was a lazy sook. And he was moved on by Roos. Glad to see the back of him. What did he do at Collingwood this year? Nothing special. Oh he was runner up for MOTY.
