My bad...will go back and edit.

Still worried by the low game time % for key players.  Something not right.

We've gone from an absolute basket case for 10 years, it just doesn't turn at the flick of a switch. This side is still learning and you gotta learn to walk before you run. Let's all just enjoy the fact that we are in with a more than good chance of playing in September, lets enjoy the ride for the last month of the season. It's the least we all deserve after the last decade.

I was angry too.

The umps were crap as well which was salt in the wound. They didnt pay one deliberate out of bounds despite Norf constantly kicking to the boundary when against the wind.

Norf built this game up b4 it started by talking about tanking and our loss record. I think it got into our players minds.

Then I realized that the record against Norf should have braced us for a loss. No team can be that bad for so long and have it all erased after 2 seasons.

Enjoy the glory Norf fans....cos that's all you've got. You won't play finals this year and you won't be close the one after.

Hogan's injury yesterday summed up our season.

Can anyone get the 4th quarter stats for contested possessions and free kicks??

i assume we lost badly in both categories. Bloody soft effort in the last quarter. Their midfield won it for them!

Likely to lose next week and be out of the 8. Wtf

Take a look how Adelaide lower their eyes when kicking into 50, compared to our bomb long bs. It has been a tactic of Goodwins as he admitted it pre game in Darwin. Goodwin needs to be smarter than this and should've learnt weeks ago as our delivery has been pitiful for a while. He also stuffed up by not leaving TMac down the wind end all game, having Jetta getting caught out v Brown was sad. Surely Goody can and will coach better going forward.

Oliver had all the time in the world in the last qtr as he streamed forward only to be run down unaware from behind. On the replay he took about 8 running steps, quite a long time. I saw 3 Melbourne players within reasonable earshot. Harmes was about 10m away facing him. Why the fk didn't someone scream to him that he was 'hot'?

Plenty to be disappointed about.

The number of passengers in such an important game. Watts didn't give a yelp. Petracca had two kicks for the game. OMac's lack of intensity in the contest. Trengove's lack of speed off the mark. ANB unable to hit simple targets. Hannan could get near it (maybe injured). JKH running around like a headless chook.

Midfield apart from Clarry and Tyson first half gave nothing and were dominated by likes of Swallow, Ziebell, Cunnington and Higgins..

The lack of a forward structure.

The clangers from our best distributors (Lewis and HIbberd).

Gawn's ineffectiveness in the ruck.

What I noticed in the last quarter (the only one I watched) was there wasn't any structure when we went forward. Where in other times there would be people moving to the correct position after short kicks there were a lot of statues and and people unsure of themselves. Even Hibberd who has been fantastic was unsure and turned that simple kick over, Hunt as well taking a strange short option with only 1min to go.

We fell apart in the final quarter, mentally, physically, and structurally. I have a feeling this will be a game that Goodwin goes through very methodically with the players to work out what went wrong because no one seemed to step up and say follow me.

Ffs Goodwin outcoached. This loss was all on the players. It was ours to lose we had them where we needed them at 3 quarter time. Attitude is what cost us not Goody, not the umpires, plain and simple attitude not putting the foot on their throat and thinking the win would do it for us.

Effort will always beat talent. Watch their 4 goals into the breeze in the game all about hard running.

Our boy's getting ahead of themselves yet again. For what reason I have no idea

This sums it up. Did we simply work too hard into the wind in the first and third quarters?

Losing Hogan played a major role in losing structure in the last.

The short kicks were questionable as you mentioned about Hunt with a minute to go.

I find it strange with the season on the line they would perform so poorly in the last.

I am more baffled at the moment than angry.

Pennant. If i might ask. Who's job is 'structures' ? Who's to shuffle assignments ?

Aint the players ?

8 free kicks to North vs zero for Melb in last qtr The TMac chopping arms on the wing was a disgrace as was the Watts tackle

I didn't see the Watts one but I definitely saw the TMac chop the arms. Inexcusable to let that one go and then they got a soft as butter push in the back in their forward 50 straight after.

But this loss was certainly not on the umpires heads, the players will rightfully where this one. Everything to play for and north looked like the ones fighting and scrapping for finals.

Thanks Jr.

North won everything in the last: hitouts, Centre clearances, tackles, contested possession and of course free kicks.

What stands out is we had only 80 interchanges.  With Hogan off why didn't use the full 90?.  Especially as Viney, Petracca and Melksham had less than 75% game time.  Looks like they were being nursed through the game.  Petracca, Melksham and Hannan were hardly sighted in the last quarter.  That is the majority of our small forwards and with Hogan out, no wonder we were at the mercy of North's talls every time the ball went into our i50.

So, the i/change numbers suggest we ran out of able players to put on the field.

For me this explains why Goodwin was accepting of the result.  He was his usual calm self but there wasn't the frustration nor contorted facial expressions after other close games when we should have won had we played more aggressively.

If this hunch of being the 'walking wounded' and injured players is right, it doesn't bode well this week vs GWS when they will be back to near full strength.

Maybe it wasn't poor attitude and effort.

Just maybe, our players did give everything they had but we didn't have enough to field a semi fit team in the last quarter.

Thanks jnrmac!

confirms that we were second to the ball and didnt put in enough in the last. [censored] disgraceful.

they won 12 stoppage clearances around the ground to our 6.  FFS Clarry cant do everything!

and not one free kick, what can you say? that chopping the arms is text book and would have been seen by all umpires and everyone in the crowd. but as everyone says, the umps didnt lose us the game, we did

all we needed to do is break even in the middle and pound it fwd. in the last 10 mins we barely went fwd.

Yes pretty damning stats. We were beaten around the ball when the game was on the line. Hard to believe we were outscored when we had the advantage of the wind! All that needed to happen was win some contested ball and thump it forward. Wind and pressure would take care of the rest. Such a disappointing loss that may cost us a finals spot.

Let's hope the players who struggled in Viney, Watts, Petracca, Hannan etc are all ok fitness wise and can serve up a better effort this week vs GWS.

Only needed ONE free kick in the right spot to make the difference between winning and losing this game,

Not the first time this has happened this year.

IT IS the Yellow Maggots fault. They know exactly what they are doing. KEEPING US OUT OF FINALS!!!!!!!

Demonland is back! Even this site was disgusted.

If the last qtr free kick count happened to Ess, Haw, Geel, North, Adel, StK, Bulldogs, Rich or COll there would be outrage on forums, in the print media, on TV and from the club. At the Dees nothing.

There is a fine line between whinging, taking the good with the bad or fighting. While it cant change the result this club needs to stand up for itself and make some noise. We are constantly on the wrong end of this stuff.

A few years back we were 23 free kicks to 3 at half time at Subiaco. Not a peep from the media or the club.

Umpires that refuse to pay obvious frees like the TMac chop should simply be dropped. We have to deal with that and yet against Carlton we had a maggot pay a free against ANB from 100m away in the first minute for a legitimate push and shove. It cost us a goal.

Rant over

Devils advocate here ...lol

Another take on the frees.. get to the ball first !!

We could have won this game easily, but between imho poor instruction and lackluster effort we plated it up for them.

No words can describe what happened at Blundstone on Saturday, not even putrid. It's currently Monday and I'm still searching for a response to that Dees effort.

If the players aren't [censored] off and revved up for GWS after that performance, they never will be.

The only thing that saved me is that I was out of the house and couldn't watch the game live. I think if I watched it, I would have been buying a new TV today as I would have thrown the [censored] out of the window.

I remember Brad Scott saying after beating us in 2010 or 2011 that all they had to do to beat Melbourne was to apply a little physical pressure and we'd fold, no matter where we are on the ladder.

Sadly, we've proved this to be true every time since.

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge.
