GAMEDAY - Round 16

Such a 50/50 game for mine.

Jeffy will have is work cut out with Docherty who is in sublime form. I see this as the most important match up today because I reckon Garlett will need to put at least 3 goals on the scoreboard for us to be a chance. I think it was the Rd 2 game that Jeffy chased down Docherty in the F50 and kicked a snag with the resulting HTB decision - more of that please.

Gibbs also concerns me. Accumulates ball, uses it well and hits the scoreboard... Need a tag on Gibbs but not sure who gets that job.

Trying to pick winners this season has completely done my head in, so I'm going with my heart today.  Dees by a skinny margin and sitting 4th spot at the end of the weekend.  How nice would that be?

Would be nice to pot Tigres out of 4th spot wouldnt it...

I suspect Melksham will go to Docherty and Vince to Gibbs.

I know, I'm just teasing. I just feel like the purveying mood around here is fear.

We've been really competitive for 95% of the season. I've got no reason to suspect we won't today.

im tipping us to win  and hope we win well  i was just saying its going to be a  wet day and infor a hard slog

which weather forecast are you looking at????  There's a 5% chance of rain in the 4-7pm window as per the BoM site

Today we really need the leaders to lead and the up and comers, Oliver, Petracca et al, to up and come.

This. I didnt even realize wed slipped to 8th overnight. This season your gone in a flash.

Mmmm remember St Kilda were 'gone' last week... its all about the body of work...

Carlton traditionally play a very defensive game.

I went to the Docklands and watched their upset win against GWS. Their defence sits back and just picked off the run and carry of the Giants. This then allowed them to quickly counter attack through unmarked men and then take a mark in the forward line.

Our normal game plan does not work well against this style so I trust that Goodwin has some tricks up his sleeve. One obvious ploy is to leave a quick mobile tall near the forward line to counter balance the defensive line. I'm sure there are others.

Not how I would look at it. GWS are hopeless at putting pressure on the counter attack from their forward 50. We are one of the best at that so Carlton shouldn't find it anywhere near as easy as they did against the Giants.

Go Dees.

I didnt mean we were gone.....i was just saying how fast it can happen.

We are quite tall, I wonder if that will hurt us if it's wet?

The cards are unsettled today, my friends. The minor arcana hint at difficulties with opposing forces, and the revealing of the Chariot was perplexing, to say the least. The adjacency of the Hanged Man and The World could suggest a fast, open game but, then again, when The Magician appeared, could it imply a slog, with too many defensive roles for an attractive game.

Dees by 13 points.

Big game today...Really it is

prepare them right Simon, it's what a good coach does.

Smack them hard in the first quarter, then dictate the game.

Carlscum are well coached kids, we have no excuse now that Garlett Gawn and Jesse are out there

I think you should sit out the next pass around of any spliff.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
