One player I rated and bought up big.  He is my Biota purchase, but a decade later, I am waiting for a bird flu epidemic.

Last half yesterday, he could have ran through once or twice, but just pulled up.  Is he scared of getting rubbed out?  Or is he carrying 12 broken ribs?

 

He has the unique gift of speed and mass.  About time he used it, even at the risk of getting rubbed out.

Questioned for years whether he'd make it. Seems like he won't. It may still click for him, but he'll need a drastic mental shift for it to happen at Melbourne.

Overrated would rather ANB In the side at least you know what you will get

Bit dramatic... He missed a large chunk of the pre season which never helps any player. He was probably in our best 2 or 3 players against Geelong in round 3.. He's played 56 games, yes he is frustrating as hell & can be lazy but I'm not writing him off after last week.. He like the side need to close the gap between their best & worst because the gap is drastic

Also noticed he didn't put his body behind the ball on a couple of occasions, which resulted in North taking clean possession.  Pre-seasons don't teach that. All mental with this one. 

We've got ANB, Hannan, Harmes and Kent all vying for two spots. IMO, Hannan has nailed down one spot. Harmes is more adaptable of the bunch and can go into the middle. ANB seems to find more of the ball but is rather one dimensional. But he tackles more than the others. Hannan doesn't tackle but he's very smart and silky smooth. Kent doesn't tackle but has "x factor".

IMO we should settle on Hannan and ANB. Go with the two best thinkers of the bunch. We also need more forward pressure and imo ANB brings that.

Kent doesn't have it.

If I see him centre it to an opponent from the HFF ,to set up a goal for them just one more time  then I am going to remove his horrible Tatts with a belt sander.

Hannan has nailed down a spot? Silky smooth? I thought he played a good game also.

Agree with all the critical sentiment above. I still have hope for Kent and believe he has all the tools to become a consistently damaging player. At the moment though he's not applying himself enough to reach that consistency but he's not on his lonesome.

Which brings me to the coaching staff and particularly the development guys. It's time for them to earn their money and get thru to these blokes that are teetering on the edge of becoming a very handy player. Roos stated to Kent that he thought he was on the verge of breaking out at the start of of the 2015 season prior to getting that bad hammy. I haven't seen any noticeable progression from then until now. Just the same player offering glimpses of brilliance and hardness.

He's plateaued and I think it's fair to lay a considerable amount of responsibility on the development staff as well as Dean himself.

I have really rated Kent previously, but ANB has offered and delivered so much more than him in all the games he has played this season.

Need plenty of defensive pressure in the forward 50 now. Can't carry Kent if he's not delivering that. He was a complete passenger on Sunday - I reckon match review in front of the squad yesterday would've been super awkward for him to sit through.

Time to bring back ANB. Or Harmes.

 

He doesn't do anything for the reputation and image of sleeve tat wearers. Compensating for what I wonder?

Depth player at best, needs to make room for others

Zero contested possessions, zero scoreboard impact, a couple of nothing tackles. Spent the entire game camped out on the boundary line 90 metres from goal looking for cheap touches, and still had no a bunch of ineffective disposals.

His best football is very good, but you're lucky to get that for half a game each month. In between times you get zero defensive work, missed shots at goal and a guy who generally looks like he'd rather be somewhere else.

I've never been a fan, but this year he has the look of someone who thinks he is the bees knees, presumably because he kicked a few goals last year. We are massively overstocked for small forwards, and I would definitely trade Kent if anyone thought he had some value.

Looks overweight to me. Which is odd, because for most of the last decade our payers have looked undersized, rather than the reverse. I wonder whether he needs to change his body shape to be less Colin Sylvia and more, say, Christian Salem?

I think he's being played slightly out of position at the moment. He's trying to be a second crumber, meaning he is trying to stay within 60/70 meters of goal at all times. I think he's better of playing the role that Bugg's doing at the moment, with a bit more freedom to move up to a true high half forward then back deep, hoping to get a mismatch. I think we'd be much better if ANB came in took the role Kent has played for the last couple of weeks, plus I think ANB has added some real pressure instincts to his game this year which also suits that role (nearly half crumber/half defensive forward).

Kent can then take Bugg's role, and be given a little bit a licence to use his speed both to get up the ground a little but also get back and hunt some goals. Not sure what to do with Bugg, he's a real defensive type winger rather than an expansive one, he might be worth sitting on GAJ for this week, sending Vince back to Salem's half back role or he goes out and we bring in Stretch to provide some run.

Either way, I'd like (at least for a week) to see Kent come back up to a true high half forward position to see if that gets him back involved.

Nailed it!

He had a good 2016. But the improvement in Garlett's defensive game, the recruitment of (a competitive) Hannah and Salem's availability have surpassed what Kent offers in the fwd half.  Simply, Kent has been left behind.

In 2017 he has been out, in, out, in of the side for a total of only 4 games in 9.   Its his 5th season and 4 of those with excellent coaches in Roos and now Goodwin.  There are no excuses for his lack of endeavour and selfish play.

When Vand, Brayshaw are fit and the likes of Stretch become regulars Kent won't get a game. 

ANB, Harmes Bugg etc are enough depth.  Kent should be on the trade table this year (OOC 2018).

I don't think tackles is the best representation of pressure applied overall. Kent doesn't apply anywhere close to the defensive pressure needed in the forward half. I feel like Hannan is setting the benchmark for the forwards (Garlett has been good as well)

Bobs up and kicks a few when we are flying.. Downhill skier of the worst kind and goes missing in nearly all of our losses. That is a KPI for mine. Who performs in losses. It ain't Kent. Sizeable opinion of his own skills but rarely delivers when it counts.

He laid one tackle in that Geelong game. It was part of the reason he was dropped after the following week. 

He's a lazy downhill skier. Unless he turns his mental application around he won't play. As simple as that. He hasn't had a good game this year. Against Geelong he kicked two but was one of our main offenders kicking behinds, which lead to the loss.

I'm close to writing him off after his entire season to date. Even when he went back to Casey the first time he was dropped, that first game he didn't seem interested.

I hope he proves me wrong, but I doubt it at this point.

His primary role is to apply forward pressure, and he doesn't do that at all. He is fast, but doesn't use his pace. He is big, but doesn't use his strength. Couple that with suspect ball use and goal kicking, and I have no idea why he got a game again when he did nothing of note in the VFL, while Kennedy, ANB and even Trenners are playing for Casey.

Trenners is slow, no doubt about it, but you give him a defensive forward role, and I bet he'll do better than Kent, and he can take a good mark and he can kick! 

Not to mention ANB, who can also go into the middle. Kent doesn't give us that flexibility at all.

Given IMO every other player in our 22 has improved in the last year, I'd say the problem is with Kent and not our development coaches.

Garlett is definitely setting the benchmark for our forwards. His pressure has been great. It's why he can get 10 possessions every week and retain his spot.
