Guthrie got off. Not even a fine. Apparently it was 'reasonable' to shove an umpire aside, yet Bernie blindsided and being backed into by one was 'careless conduct' and warrants a fine.

Ridiculous!

My understanding is that the area directly behind the ump is the 'protected area' you should stay out of. The umpire moved directly backwards into this area. Vince was in there, and he wasn't pushed in by anyone else, so I can't see how it's surprising he is receiving a fine.

I'm surprised because Guthrie got nothing and he actively got into the umpire. The umpire literally walked backwards into Vince while Vince wasn't looking.

He was pushed by Sloane

That's my understanding of it too. The umpire even signals his intent to back into that area. If Sloane pushed Vince into the umpire, then it should be down to him. What I cant fathom, is how tf Guthrie got off.

Haven't seen the Guthrie incident, but MRP inconsistency is hardly surprising. The umpires can and will move backwards in that way all day, every day.

I didn't notice that in the live vision (my memory is that the collision is quite a while after he and Sloane are side by side), but maybe you're right - if so, stiff. Anyone have a link to the replay?

It's a thousand bucks.

I reckon Sloan will flick him $500.

Thanks for the link. Sloane pushes Vince away from him well before either ruckman are competing for the footy, and didn't push Vince into the umpire.

If Vince had turned right, or kept moving in the same direction, he'd have been fine; instead, Vince pivots, blind, smacks into the back of the ump. Unfortunate way to lose a K, but hardly an injustice.

Just saw the Guthrie incident. Umpire Schmidt should be fined or suspended for being in the wrong position. If Guthrie didn't push him, Schmidt would have impeded an easy mark. Common sense prevailed, which is a rarity for the MRP.

And Vince wasn't pushed into the umpire by Sloane. Vince actually gave Sloane a smack in the chops when the ball was bounced, and lost his way. The fine was appropriate.

Lol! Surely gotta challenge that!

This is official proof the mrp is a lottery with no method or logic

The improvement made by having just two umpires makes the fine look like a shrewd investment.

I agree with this.  Vince was in the protected area, while in Guthrie's case he is well within his rights to take the mark, umpire there or not.  It was Schmidt's fault.

If the AFL really believe that a player intentionally makes contact with an umpire, the player should be banned for life. No player would ever intentionally make contact with an umpire ( with the possible exceptions of John Bourke of Collingwood and Phil Carman of Collingwood)  The accidental contact between the umpire on Saturday and Bernie was a shame but not deserving of a sanction. How often are umpires obstructing and baulking players in their legitimate attempts to play the game. The umpires are responsible for 90% of collisions between players and umpires.

It was stated on sen that Guthrie was picked up on audio telling the ump to get out of the way while the ball was in flight to him. Possibly that was taken  into consideration.

If you want the umpires to not interfere with the play then you have to give them a clear exit out of the pack. This exit they have to take running backwards and blind at speed while trying to monitor the play. They need to be able to trust that no-one is in their path so they can back out confidently.

I think it came in about five years ago?

Good pick up DL, hope the club says we will fight it?

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
