I still think he is young enough to garner something decent in return at the very least, but I'm not sure the FD would pull the trigger on such a trade. Spot on about Hibberd too, Steve. I'm sure he has curency, but I can't see us putting him up for trade. I just see him being overtaken really if he continues to perform the way he has been. FA and some trading of future picks would be the way to go now. Our core are still so young so I'm not fussed about draft picks this year, (depending on the depth of the draft). We need to target specific players now. We're ready for that. 1 Quote

Adam The God 30,731 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 He's coming off an injury interrupted pre-season and is getting involved despite really struggling. His ceiling is a lot higher than he's given credit for. It's tiresome reading the same posts over and over again, so that's me done for this thread. We'll agree to disagree. You've got your thread to talk about Tyson. Now it won't need to be brought up in every second thread. 3 Quote

I don't mind that you disagree. But it's the basis of your disagreement that makes little sense to me. His pre-season was no more more interrupted than that of Hibberds. So how does your logic stack up? Fitness is one thing. Touch, decision making skills, disposal etc has little to do with having an interrupted pre-season. They have footballs in their hands nearly every day. 3 Quote

He can't run, his field kicking is terrible and he is nowhere near aggressive enough. GWS knew which one to let go. Tyson was great in year 1, when the opposition had no idea who he was, and he was only competing against Nathan Jones as that first-possession midfielder. The opposition now know he's a left footer and that he doesn't have a right side, meanwhile Oliver and Viney have now gone ahead of him and he has no other strings to his bow. With Lewis back this week, I hope Goodwin sends Tyson back to Casey. You can't play all our slow mids at Etihad against the lightning fast bombers. We will almost certainly have to trade one of them out at the end of the year. Agree with all of this. 2 Quote

As much as we'd like our 70+ gamers to be hitting their straps right now, sometimes the reduced pre season does impact on their ability. His kicking the other night was probably the worst I'd seen for the season, but his hands were cleaner. Tyson is in exactly the same basket as Viney is. He needs to work on his disposal and his decision making. But both players are doing the team things and tackling. It doesn't bother me that you don't rate the tackle stat, but I can assure you the FD do. That's why turnover merchants like ANB keep getting games and why JKH is likely to get another game too. Yep, probably, but where does that put Kent? If he got the same attention as Dom, people would be saying he'd never play again. Despite his brainfades, even ANB has been improving. Harmes is a more solid player this year too. If we can convert some of these C graders into solid B graders, we'll be ready to challenge come 2018. Until then, we have to back in our FD and that goes for Tyson and Viney's development too. Quote

Skuit 10,031 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 (edited) I must be in the very small minority who isn't particularly fazed by what has been perceived as an overuse of handball. Except I think Tyson has been a bit of an offender. Most of our players are hand-balling at speed and moving it around in an attacking manner. Tyson seems to prop and search for a handball or short kick target as the first option rather than look to attack goal-ward. And this where we get annoyed for flat-footed fiddling. I'm probably making too much of a few instances, but when placed alongside our other aggressive or creative centre-mids in Viney, Oliver and Jones - you can understand where the broader perceptions arise. My other theory: Dom Tyson isn't very distinctive-looking. I remember the clangers but otherwise I'm usually a little surprised when I check the disposals column and see Dom with 28. * His goal-kicking radar has also been well off of late - 5-10 since midway through last year. Lucifers Hero 40,716 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 (edited) When Brayshaw is well again I think he is a much better option in the middle than Tyson. Gus can do all the things Dom can plus some. Edited April 26, 2017 by Lucifer's Hero 4 Quote
Bay Riffin 1,518 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 I thought he was one of our worst offenders on Monday night. He always seems in slow motion, and his kicking efficiency is low. Im now wondering about the trade for picks 2 which netted Kelly for GWS. Although salem I am happy with who's hands are elite. We sort of need Tyson to be our last picked midfielder, but his lack of pace is a worry. 1 Quote

Little Goffy 14,963 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 He's still not having a great impact, and still far too many clangers. But he is definitely improving game by game. As it stands, he is legitimately holding his place in the team, and has the credible prospect of improvement. As others have said, he needs to improve his kicking and the 'vision thing'. At the moment he's not cutting any holes in the opposition, and sometimes does tear a hole in us! But it'd be an odd day when a footy department cuts a player who is improving. Quote
Ted Lasso 19,586 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Dom is almost symbolic of our team, he's winning the ball and doing a lot right but is just wasting it far to often his decision making needs work 2 Quote
sisso 2,627 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 He was one of our best players in the second half of last year, especially in our great wins over Hawthorn and Port, and our near win against the Eagles in Perth. So we know what Dom can do at his best. Bit early to call for his axing or trade, sure he's not in top form at the moment but he can still be a key performer as he works into the season. 1 Quote
Young Blood 2,642 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 (edited) It's round 6. Keen to revisit this thread when we're past the halfway mark. I do think he's had an interrupted pre-season and looks a tad off. That alone is a good reason for him to either rest or get some form back at Casey. Thought he was pretty decent against Freo and one of few that played well against Carlton. But jeez we're talking about a guy who is 23! I personally think he's got some more time to develop and improve his fitness and decision making. Edited April 26, 2017 by mongrel 2 Quote

WA Demon13 39 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 His kicking is diboloical - 9 kicks on Monday - 7 clangers from those kicks and 1 kick that was'nt counted as clanger as a relayed free kick was paid - that kick went straight to Richmind but Harmes got the down field. At the moment he is aliability with ball in hand and needs a long break IMO. Quote

BAMF 4,483 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Personally I had the same doubts last year. He was easily the least effective of our inside mids and is unable to play a different role. Then he came into form and dominated towards the end of the year and I ate humble pie. He even got a couple of brownlow votes in there somewhere. I'm not ready to write him off again just yet. Quote
Akum 2,660 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 In a game where most of the team had well over 80% TOG, Tyson & Viney could only muster 74% each. They were both the lowest except for Spencer & Smith. They've been around that mark or less for the last few games. They can't possibly be fully fit. As for the wisdom of playing 2 key mids who aren't fully fit ... 1 Quote
