Paid overs. Well done MFC on bending over again.

They went all in at first. Our first offer should have been the final offer.

Isn't next years draft rated as another or near-superdraft? No wonder Adelaide were adamant on getting our first round pick. STUPID!

Done deal: Lever joins Demons

Adelaide will receive two first-round draft picks in exchange for defender Jake Lever after a trade deal was struck with Melbourne on Thursday morning at Etihad Stadium.

The Crows will get pick No.10, a future first-round selection and a future fourth-round selection from the Demons and send Lever, pick No.35 and a future third-round selection to Melbourne.

Too much imo.

gone! out for 152!!

what an innings for a 21 year old...the sort of player you can build a side around

not flashy, but just gets the job done

very happy with the deal personally - kid is a jet and it was beholden on us to get it done

Yup.

I said before the end of the season that two first was worth paying. But in the weeks leading up, a 1st and 2nd made sense given it was a superdraft. Even two early second rounders that could be flipped to get us into 2018 again would have been better.

I wish posters would seriously stfu about what we'll be giving up vs getting in return for the Lever trade.

Adelaide made a [censored] Grand Final with zero top 10 picks in their side and a host of players who were either picked up late in the National Draft, traded in for later picks or picked up in the Rookie Draft.

Sloane was pick 44 and Walker pick 75. Jacobs was brought in for picks 34 and 67, they gave pick 37 to St Kilda for Lynch. Knight was pick 46 and Atkins 81.

Need I go on?

I will.

Rookie drafts nabbed them Hartigan, Laird, Cameron and Kelly.

That's almost half of their best 22 and more importantly, some of their most influential and important players feature in that group. Compare that to the MFC who have a plethora of high-end talent, arguably the second-most in the AFL behind GWS.

If history to date suggests anything, it's that the culture and environment of a club is of most importance to any sort of talent reaching its potential. GWS continue to stumble despite being the most talented group within the league.

We're at a stage where we need to harbour, nurture and develop the group we have and we should be jumping for joy that Lever, (a once touted top 3 draft pick and the best young defender in the game at age 21) has nominated us as the club he wishes to play for.

We're on to the next chapter of our growth as a club which is developing what we've got for an assault over the next five to seven years.

Shut up about the rest.

We have given up the unknown to secure the known. SMART!

Happy it's done.... a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

We get the best intercept defender in the league who is tracking even better than Rance did at his age and a heap of you are still whinging.

The draft is a complete lottery. Lever is a sure thing.

This is to be celebrated not bemoaned!

Almost needs two threads. The "f yeah, we got him" and the "waaaaaaah, we paid overs". I'm in the former camp and don't really want my mood sullied by the latter.

I think it's a huge gamble but we may trade our way back into the draft by the end of the trade period so I'll wait until then to fully judge.

The draft is a gamble, proven players like Lever are gold.

I don't understand why it's a huge gamble. Surely MFC supporters would recognise it's the draft that is a gamble, not gun 21 year olds.

We traded off lottery tickets for a known quantity. If someone said to you, "I'll give you a million dollars, or two tickets in to a draw to win 30 million", which one would you take?

If this kids is as good as Rance and has ten years with a proven track record, I think well done.

We have squandered draft picks before, a proven player for mind is good. This leave pick 27, 35 and whatever we get for Watts. All of which maybe used to secure someone with dash. Hogan definitely staying now.

Im happy.

A future 1st round pick means we can trade into 15-18 and hand that over. Thats about what we may get for Jack Watts.

Just incredible that people can still find something to moan about when we land the most highly rated young defender in the game.

You guys will forget all about draft numbers, when we are playing finals.

And remember, players families read these threads. Show a bit of excitement for the guy.

This is bloody wonderful news.

(Oh, and Jake, watch out for the bearded guy on a scooter)

Agree...

Look it's probably about right if next year's first rounder is 16-18. Come On Lever! Premiership here we come - no pressure.

Im just impressed with all respect posters are showing to each other. Things that could have degenerated haven't.

Think you owe the site a donation - we are well under the 2100 points margin.

Looks like Tmac is gonna be up forward next year and thats not a bad thing.

Was disappointed when I first heard but all for it. I along with many last year whinged and complained at Hibberd for a second rounder saying too much and it was an absolute steal. Even Melksham looks good value in hindsight.

Draft picks are so overvalued throughout the industry because we see year in year out good juniors not develop and overlooked juniors ala Sloane, Fyfe etc turn picks 30-40 into AA's.

adelaide have done the hard work risked the pick and developed him and it's cost us downgrading a first to a second and upgrading a 4th to a 3rd. The more I think about it, I'm just thrilled to have him on board

Completely agree.

I'd rather bank the picks and draft someone who is going to structurally set us up so much better, than risking and drafting a midfielder that may be a bust. Lever has such a positive knock-on effect for players such as Hunt, Hibberd, Tmac, Omac, etc. We can easily get an outside midfielder as a free agent next year. If we are to compete for a flag and finish top 4, you do it by bringing in blokes like Lever.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
