I had wondered  what goes as we resigned Frosty. Must be a mid we're seriously chasing

First thing I thought too when Frosty re-signed.

Now perhaps theres no correlation, but youd think that if something was cooking with Lever we would leave Frost as a trade option at trade week.  Hes not moving now.

Was thinking the same thing. Maybe Lever's management advised the club that we're not in contention, so we immediately re-signed Frost.

Come on guys, do you really think that the Crows would want Frost as part of a compensation for Lever?  There's no way we've exited the Lever race just because we've signed Frost.  Stop thinking about best 18 needs and start thinking about best 42...every club needs depth, and with Col Garland on his last legs, what happens if TMac and/or Frost get injured?

No reason why Lever, TMac, OMac and Frost can't co-exist in the same side, and even if we're playing a team with a smaller forward line, we can either move TMac forward or have Frost/OMac as depth.   Absolutely convinced we are still in for Lever and a big chance to land him.

GM.. I think its that many , myself included suspected Frost would be currency in getting Lever.  Not that they couldnt co exist

Also I doubt Frost attracted much interest from other clubs (particularly the Crows as they have many tall defenders) hence why is resigned.

I am happy to be corrected but did we not trade the Sylvia compensation pic for Vince giving Adelaide pick 21 which netted Matt Crouch who is a newly appointed All Australian. I wouldn't give the Crows overs for any trade as long term I think they have the better of that trade.

The challenge as I see it is balancinging bringing in ready made footballers 3-4 seasons or more versus top end 18 year olds.

It doesn't change the argument for Lever.

Our backline is presently a weakness and needs bolstering with a quality tall.

Frost and OMac May not make it.

A good player should be versatile enough that we can use them in other positions.

A team needs a number of options for all spots because of injuries, form etc. It's too simplistic to say just because we signed Frost we must be after a mid.

I'm not sure why some believe that we're out of the race for Lever now that we've re-signed Frost.

Here's a quick profile of what key defence depth looks like:

West Coast - Mackenzie, McGovern, Schofield and Barrass. This year they went with only three of the four and they had McInnes come in earlier in the year as a swing man whilst they had injuries. McGovern similarly went forward whilst Kennedy was injured. And they have an abundance of tall ruck/forwards who were really effective and helped carry the load.

Really, we should be aiming to play Tom and one of Oscar or Frost with Lever as our intercept mark/spoiler ala McGovern for West Coast.

Ideally, I'd love a mature-aged big body with an older head who could start ahead of Oscar and Frost also whilst they continue to work on their games at VFL level. Either that or as I said, we could make a radical move and play Hogan at full back.

Whichever way it goes, I can't at all see how the signing of Frost will have any bearing on the Lever approach.

The thing is if frost says " I don't want to go to Adelaide " we can't force him it likely has absolutely nothing to do with lever and even if he was involved in the trade he would have only really been a small part of it.

Seems to be plenty of smoke around this one but I am wary that Collingwood tend to find money for guys like this and the hawks are always a player

So because a twitter account with 64 followers posts that we are out of the race for Lever, we now take that as gospel?

Despite everybody else in the media saying we are still the heavy favourites...

Latest rumblings is Fremantle might pony up pick 5 if we can find them a suitable trade/exchange of picks to get them back into the 2nd round and we will secure Balic as the steak knives.

Frost signs and they all go running .....

Just because he signs, doesn't necessarily mean we are out of leverage...

Could be that the Crows aren't interested in him (could be another player and/or just pick 10), or we require some depth down back, and we're not prepared to let go of him - he's required...

Would anyone do  our this year and next year first rounders (10 & ?) for lever and the crows first this year (16-18). Use the crows pick on lockie obrien a classy outside mid.

2018 supposed to be a super draft. Better to keep that one if possible

i'm presuming something akin to:

crows: get pick 5, lose lever + something else
freo: get pick 10, a second round pick + something else (no idea what, obviously not mcgovern), lose pick 5, balic
melbourne: get lever and balic, lose pick 10, something else (kent to freo?)

i don't know how it would work at all

i'd rather just pick 10 for lever :D

Agree, our Tall defenders are flakey at best and we don't have 1 that is a rookie.  Frost is a monster and needs to learn to use his strength, Oscar is Oscar bit like Tom we never know what we will get so we need a high quality in Lever plus these guys getting better.

Fair enough.

I wasn't going with concensus as such, but had personally thought this a likely path as in a player and a pick for Lever and a pick.

I find this part of the season intriguing.

With us signing Frost and also rumored to be interested in Jackson Trengove from Port, does that indicate we are out of the race for Lever?

If not, then it should just be pick 10 for Lever and move on.

Too much imo. Just pick 10 should do it.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
