Missed the second half of it. He talked about junior footballer and lead up to the draft. Was hoping to get selected as a rookie by Richmond 3 weeks out from the draft. Then Brisbane showed interest and he thought he'd go pick 30s to them. Then a week out from draft Melbourne showed real interest and he got drafted pick4 and was wrapped.

Said he still needs to improve his fitness and the defensive side of his game. That's what coaches have told him going forward. Was a very outside player until he was about 16 and got OP. Couldn't play footy for a year, stacked on 20kgs, came back and had to learn to play inside because he couldn't move much. Worked out for the best as he loves the contest and stoppages.

Was talking down his standing in the footy award rating for The Age, Coaches Association etc and is just happy he's been able to get over a poor preseason where he didn't commit with his conditioning and made some poor choices.

Didnt head the second part of the interview but jeez we have landed an absolute ripper in Clarry. Credit to Jason Taylor and his team for taking the risk as it's paying off big time.

Dont tell me the Tigers have screwed up again!??

And, for much of the season, playing in a midfield as the clearance guy with no dedicated ruckman.

His consistency has been remarkable for a 19 year old. His quietest games have still been 25+ touch games, with plenty of tackles, clearances etc.

Hey - just wondering if anybody could point me to (or post) that amazingly committed Oliver clearance to Jeffy (want to show it to my Magpie mates)?  Cheers

think you mean to jake melksham see here about 4 min mark

One of the commentators on 7 was saying during the match that, up to this point in the season (Rnd 12) Oliver has had more handball disposals than any other player ever in the history of the game. Not sure where the stat came from but pretty amazing if true for a guy this early in his career.

Has a huge boot on him too, I'd like to see him kick it more

Thanks Daisy but no, it wasn't that one - sorry, I should have been more specific - it wasn't last weekend -  it was one somebody posted maybe a month or a bit more ago - embarrassingly, I can't remember who it was against - Monday's game must have addled my head as well as my heart -  it was one of the most tenacious passages of play I've ever seen - from memory, Clarrie battled all the way from the centre down to the forward zone in the middle of a scrum, lost it and won it back then sent a beautiful handball to Garlett, who goaled - I thought it was incredible, but I can't find it - thought it must have been in this thread, but can't find it here - tried Youtube, etc.. no luck - thought this would be quicker

any help appreciated - do want to gloat at a couple of Maggie mates

cheers

I think you're thinking of the clearance against Richmond on ANZAC Day.  He hunted the ball twice in the space of 5 seconds and got it out to Garlett (I think) to kick the goal.

EDIT - http://www.melbournefc.com.au/video/2017-04-26/rd-5-all-the-goals about 3.40 through this video

That pass to Melksham just before 3QT from the centre was a thing of beauty

Wasn't there another one in a more recent match? Or am I losing all track of time?

More please

Here are the Oliver gifs I've posted so far this year. I thought I had better quality on the St Kilda one somewhere but can't find it at the minute. I'm planning to make a handball supercut at the end of the season. Haven't got to Monday's game yet.

Breathtaking so far ...

Even in a "handball supercut", you'd have to include that sublime footpass to Melksham for the goal that put us in front?

Might have to make a footpass supercut too!

He also spoke about playing at the murray bushrangers and never heard of the skin fold tests and when he was tested it had to be under 50 and he was no where near that.

Said Mccartney sat him down and spoke to him about his diet and said have a look how viney, salem and a couple of others prepare.

Also said how the coach is a pretty calm person.

We have a couple of beauties there in Oliver and McCartney. ???

http://demonwiki.org/Most+Contested+Possessions+in+a+season

Just found this on demonwiki. This is some pretty great reading. Or terrible reading if you consider how bad we've been since 1999.

So our top ten record holders for contested possessions in a season... and 7 of the records are held by current starting midfielders. Viney (2nd), Jones (3rd, 4th, 6th and =9th X2) and Tyson (8th).

Why do I bring this link here? After 11 rounds Clarry is on 161... The current record holder (Moloney) is on 271.

In other words, if Oliver averages 10 contested possessions in the last half of the season he'll break the record by an absolute mile.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
