Mids Mids Mids

a few years ago we had about 2 of them!!

And as I said two years ago we cant get enough inside and unders. Many on this site thought I was mad! At the risk of opening up old wounds, do I have to remind everyone that we chose Dud Toumpas instead of Ollie Wines? Imagine having Wines in as well! Yer just cant have too many in and under elite mids! The game is won and lost right there!!

I took this as a challenge, I think I felt a compulsion to get a lid on. But really, even after looking over a whole lot of top picks and players in recent years, there just aren't many cases.

I've done a run-through of the other 'teen star' contenders, I would be quite happy to have them be Oliver's peers and equals!

The obvious 'set' of stars who managed to dominate a few games even as teenagers includes -

Fyfe, Martin, Selwood, Bontempelli, Macrae and Cripps

Others worth noting -

Toby Greene, Harley Bennell, Chad Wingard, Oliver Wines, Isaac Heeney

Lance Franklin managed two bags of six in his second season, but it wasn't until his third that he really took off (game for game, Hogan is a mile ahead of his curve :)  )

For the record, saturday's effort was definitely the best individual game so far from anyone in Oliver's draft.

Yes. That decision still makes less than zero sense

Vast improvement on the avatar old son.

Might have to change it back.

Oliver is a very special talent. Amazing vision. I can't recall a Melbourne player with better 6th sense radar.

Has first movers advantage, just reads the direction of the ball before other players. Then can buy time in a contest to get out and release or fire off a reflex handball from inside contest to outside. Sublime.

George was going nuts giving me warning points, so hopefully I'll stay low for a while.

:)

Perhaps we should call him Clarence Olivier, as he is a class above most others at his craft (only old farts will get this!) :)

i think that's what larry eventually said, r&b :o

I thought he was played very close yesterday, not sure if it was a tag but i dont think he was being ignored

I wish Clarry moved like shinkansen! I have him more in the "James" from Thomas the tank engine category. More of a solid worker than a jet.

A couple of weeks ago Goodwin came up with a very apt description when he said Oliver is one of those players who get faster the closer they get to the ball.  He tends to just cruise around, but he accelerates through packs to either burst out or tackle whoever got to the ball ahead of him.

Clearance Oliver..

Cant believe nobody has thought of that yet, its almost too perfect.

Oliver is my favorite player and could be a star of the competition if he can build enough of a tank. He's so damaging around the stoppages with his quick decision making and sure hands, but it's good we are starting to see him create space for himself and use his brilliant kicking skills. Gun.

Parish is very good also, and was the better of the two players last year. Oliver will be better long term if he gets fit enough but that's no slight on Parish. He looks a gun also and only a fool suggests otherwise. He did a few Cousins-like things last year grabbing balls out of packs and using agility and gut run to break away from opponents.

One played with the pharmacist and the other under him.

Clary the clearance King ( I was going to put all "K's" but thought better of it)!

Round 1, St Kilda vs Melbourne...

Melbourne...M Gawn... one vote

  • POSTGAME: Essendon

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

  • GAMEDAY: Essendon

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
