Giants don't seem to be offering so much as a squeak against Brisbane at the moment. Which reminded me, Brisbane's actual scoring difference hasn't been so spectacular, it's just that their opponents have completely failed to score much of anything at all. One loss by even three or four goals would bring their % right back down.

Anyway, destiny is of course in our own hands. With three rounds left to play, we're one game short and we play -

One of the teams we need to pass, and

Two teams which are winless and have % below 65.

Poor Kate Sheahan (daughter of Mike), just as she was about to get her first kick her leg just gave way with what looked a serious knee injury.

Devastating.

Saw that.. poor girl was in tears. Poor old Mike looked devastated.

With all the highs of footy it can be an extremely cruel game. I know shes been working really hard on trying to break into the team and within a minute it's all over.

Hopefully the pies give her another year on the list to get back to full strength.

Go girls Woot!!! Another great win  How did my girl Paxman go?

18 kicks, 6 by hand. 7 marks, 4 tackles, 95 dream team points.

I see now why our midfield is rated so highly. Pearce, O'Dea and Paxman all had around 25 possessions.

Carlton's highest possession winners had around 12.

Credit where credit is due, fair play to Carlton for coming out after 3 quarter time---with their season hanging by a thread, some key players out injured, and no momentum in the game at that point---and really having a go at us. Brave effort from them. Glad it came up short though!

Another great win! So many contributors, with Daisy being just immense again. Her score involvements must be through the roof. Best of all, she brings other players along with her.

The player that suddenly leaped out to me this week was Grierson, who took it up another notch with some strong marks and great presence around the ground.

And Rocky for the win:

Er ... please. The competition hasn't reached the half way mark yet.

What happened to taking things one week at a time?

We have three games left.  Fremantle, GWS and Adelaide.  Of those, Adelaide should be the only challenge, although you never know when the others might click.  If we win all of them then we are a chance at finals.  If we win all of them and Brisbane beat Adelaide then we do play in the final.  If Adelaide beat Brisbane then I don't see much chance of us making the GF either way.  It would require one of them dropping another game.

Now the Crows and Brisbane both have a tough couple of weeks ahead.  Next week they play each other, then the week after Brisbane play the Dogs and Adelaide play us.  In essence, we'll know who plays the GF by the end of round six unless something goes drastically wrong in round seven.  Brisbane could struggle against the Blues, but it's highly doubtful that Collingwood can take Adelaide.

Elise O'Dea is an out and out star. Wrapped we've got her.

Totally agree. To me it looks like she's got about 50% better with every game in the AFLW, although she's apparently played for a number of years. Maybe it's just a matter of confidence - she looks like at some stage a game or two back, she's just realised that she's capable of being not just a good solid contributor, but an "out & out star". In my book, anyone who can improve so much in mid-career is something special.

Her disposal by hand or foot is very very good, she plays so direct, and her tackling is ferocious (I reckon she got a couple of harsh decisions in the last quarter for two very hard but fair tackles).

If she keeps up to the standard of her performance against Carlton, she's in the Daisy league. And of course she "bleeds red & blue".

Congratulations to Jasmine for a terrific game and her well deserved nomination http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2017-02-28/grierson-nabs-a-rising-star-nomination

Our second rising star nominee!

She's been great across the half-back line. I'm surprised that she's only played in defence in the last 3 games, because she just seems to have an instinct for it. She knows when to run, when to kick short & when to go long, and her disposal is great. She's also great at working her way through tight situations, especially for someone so young who hasn't played for all that long.

We seem to have a great crop of young potential-10-year-plus players who have all taken it up several notches in just a few games. Grierson in defence, Mithen on the ball and Mifsud in attack have been the standouts, but I also liked the contributions from Berry & Kemp.

We knew that our established players were likely to do well, and except for the Brisbane game, they have. But to me it's the vastly improved contribution from these young players that make the team really worth watching.

Also totally agree.  She's powerful and hard to bring down in traffic, has good control and distance on her kicking and displayed a beautiful sidestep on the wing against the Doggies a couple of weeks ago.  She's been a huge surprise for me this season, and I'm thrilled we have her in the side.

Let's not forget we played them in a blizzard and 2 of their goals came from 50m penalties.

50m penalties are so much more severe in the AFLW because they generally only kick half the distance of the men.

Seriously cannot believe that Elise O'Dea was reported for that great tackle in the last quarter. It was a fair tackle and she should not have even been penalised.

Fortunately the AFLW MRP saw sense:

Melbourne’s Elise O’Dea, reported for rough conduct against Carlton’s Sarah Hosking in the last quarter at Casey Fields on Saturday, also escaped a charge. The MRP said her "actions to tackle were not unreasonable in the circumstances".

IIRC this led directly to their first goal of the last term.

They also got one goal from a dodgy free kick directly in front of the goals.  They won by less than three goals, so safe to say it was the umpires who got the points that day.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
