Melbourne remains one of the youngest and least experienced of the AFL clubs -

Total list breakdown: Age, experience, 100-gamers, teens and more

The club's drafting and trading over the past couple of months has been in a direction away from youth (only two 18 year olds have been introduced this year), otherwise we surely would have remained even close to the young and inexperienced end of these lists. And this while one of our oldest players, Heritier Lumumba, probably remains there in name only.

One interesting number is the Swans & Doggies number of players from other clubs.  Bottom and second bottom of the ladder!  Building from within.

Who is the fourth over 30 on the list?  Certainly Vince, Lumumba and Lewis all qualify.  It seems to me the next oldest is Pedersen who doesnt turn 30 until next year.

Yeah it's Pedersen, the averages are as of round 1 next year.

What I've noticed is that while we come in 3rd youngest, our average age is much much closer to the rest of the comp, compared with previous year. The difference between the top team and the 17th team (Brissy are a massive outlier this year) is at most 1 year, normally the top few and bottom few are a lot further apart. Does it mean anything? Probably not, but I think it could mean that we're nearly over the 'expansion years' and the comp could be much more even than before.

    UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

    Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024.     Demonland Trackwatchers ventured down to Gosch's Paddock for the final week of training for the 1st to 4th Years until they are joined by the rest of the senior squad for Preseason Training Camp in Mansfield next week.     A couple of Demonland Trackwatchers braved the rain and headed down to Gosch's paddock to bring you their observations from the second day of Preseason training for the 1st to 4th Year players.
