I think with his aerobic capacity developed to where it is now, I think he will be wasted if we play him as just a KPF (the label), although would hate to be the defender chasing him around the 50, goals will come from everybody if we develop the potential that is obviously there, so he may kick more than the 40, that is the number I would be content with

I believe Jesse is capable of being a 60-70 goal a year mobile CHF but to get there he has a little work to do on his kicking, whether that's mental or technical i'm not sure but it clearly needs work.

we're developing our spread of goal kickers with Watts and Garlett showing they're consistent goal kickers this year, Kent kicking 25 and Weideman looking promising as well but for Hogan as an individual i think his kicking is going to hold him back if it hasn't improved from last year, i would see 40 goals from him this year as pretty disappointing given his talent and the supply he should get. obviously there are other KPI's he'll have but i think he'll still be our main source of goals and we need him to kick 50-60 this year.

I am amazed at the complacency of this post. Hogan has the potential to kick 100+ goals a year. He is held back by his very ordinary goal kicking. To say he does not need to practice and improve is frankly nonsense.

So I wrote

Why, he had the yips for a while, but still kicked 41 goals, and the service into him in some games was appalling, every player will try and improve on the last year

So where does it say he does not need to practice and improve?

He is like 50% of the team, still young in terms of both age and games experience, some of the expectations placed him by posters on here are frankly ridiculous, similar to Jack Watts in years gone past, he has kicked a similar amount of goals to Jack Riewoldt at a similar stage, so hopefully he will be on the same trajectory of goal kicking as Jack

Nope, the stutter has been there since day one, I watched with amazement (along with other players ) at his first training session when he lined up for a shot at goal, it is another myth on here that he hasn't got the distance, he has, as an avid training watcher he can kick them from anywhere.

This is still a very young guy who has had issues both physical and mental,.he will be fine, I am amused that the only people who don't rate him are MFC supporters.

He is going to be one part of a very good team going forward, if he kicks a consistent 40 or 50 goals that will do me, because hopefully we will have a few more doing the same thing, training drills are already showing me that this is what the plan is

Saty. It was just a suggestion of where his stutter may have originated back through his junior years. Maybe he has the distance ability - but if he was confident in it we would see that on game day. And we don't.

Skuit, Josh Kennedy has had that ridiculous line dancing technique but because he is now a recognised Coleman contender it is never mentioned, first 3 years at West Coast 7, 31 and 41 goals, sounds eerily familiar

Regularly mentioned that he had a ridiculous line dancing technique but has modified it to be much more moderate and smooth. If Jesse could modify his not to look like a hopscotch game we'd all breathe a sign of relief and he'd probably kick more than 78 goals next year, which is what Jack Riewoldt kicked in his 4th year on an AFL list.

If Jesse kicked 78 or more there would also be a stack of crumb goals for Jeffy and Kent, not to mention the give offs to Watts, Weed, Pedo, etc. We'd make the 8. Surely we would all be pleased with playing finals footy in 2017. Surely....

Not all would breathe a sigh of relief, as I am not as bothered as some, I am sure others feel the same, like Kennedy, Jesse will mature

MFC supporters, probably due to the last 40 years or so, place unrealistic expectations on young shoulders

After speaking to Jesse a couple of times and watching him train, he is working his arse off to be a better player this year, whether this includes modifying his goal kicking technique we will see when the real thing starts

If I can take a pic on Dom Tyson hitting a target with his right foot, anything is possible

I can't quite tell if you're arguing a point with me Saty. My original post was supportive of Jesse's action, arguing that he should do what comes naturally rather than get distracted by whatever he's being told he should be concentrating on.

To borrow from a golfing analogy, while there are some good swing plane fundamentals that most good golfers try to adhere to, there have been some very good golfers with some pretty ugly off-plane swings. Jim Furyk has won 17 PGA Tour events and a US Open with a loopy swing that is almost vertical at the top. You wouldn't teach his swing to a beginner. David Duval was known as "Duval the Shovel" but got to World No. 1. Craig Parry was famously ribbed as having the swing of an 18-handicapper. However, at the critical point of impact, all were on-plane and powerful.

Similarly, the trajectory of a football depends solely on what is happening at the point of impact with the boot. What happens in the run-up is not necessarily material to that impact. That is not to say you can't improve impact by improving the fundamentals of your run-up, which might well be the case with Hogan, but if the ball is sailing through the goals long and straight then the point of impact is fine (Kennedy). Hopping, skipping, twitching and stuttering can be irrelevant to the actual impact of the kick.

More than a few very good golfers have ruined their game by mucking around too much with their swings (e.g. Woods, Baker-Finch) and therefore mucking around with their heads.

I can assure you this is not the case.

Talk to a Bombers supporter about who they'd prefer between Hogan and Daniher, a Pies supporter with Moore, Saints with McCartin.

Whilst its true that the thing they point to is the body language and mental fragility, his kicking action comes up regularly too. It's like he's taken the worst of the Riewoldts: Jack for the mental fragility and dummy spits at his team mates, and Nick for the wayward set shot kicking.

It is remarkable that anyone could flippantly suggest that this kicking action couldn't be improved.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
