When is this all going to end

All we can do, I suppose, is be grateful we're still around to mark their passing.

It's been a bad, bad year, to paraphrase (the late) Gram Parsons.

I used to go to Q Club and see Madder lake in 1972 and 1973. I loved Billy Thorpe of course but 12 lb toothbrush would get all our heads (and conti's and Venus) going.

Can't remember clearly, but I seem to recall Madder Lake opening for Led Zeppelin at Kooyong in 1972. I was studying graphic design at Swinburne that year and it was a breeding ground for musicians...members of Madder Lake, Captain Matchbox and Skyhooks were all studying in the Film & Television faculty, Stephen Cummings was another studying there, and Sports guitarist Andrew Pendlebury's father was head of the Graphic Design faculty.

Saw Madder Lake at school during lunchtime for a $1 - money well spent.  If I was being honest, I can remember seeing them but have no idea what they were like. On the other hand, I do remember seeing Jeff Duff with Kush at school. They played one and a half songs, Jeff simulated oral sex with his guitarist and the school principal saw this, pulled the plug and announced the gig as over !

Mt Scopus in burwood - our SRC ( student representative council) were very active.

Over the years we saw Daddy Cool, Chain, Spectrum ( I think they were murtecps by then) , Madder Lake, Chain and in my last year - skyhooks just before they broke big ! I am sure there were more but that's the ones i remember.

They used to play in our assembly hall at lunch time - so it was about 30 minutes - not much more than that. ( my last year was 1975)

Madder Lake's original singer, Eton Trepper,  lives around the corner from me and as I recall they started with guys from my old school,  Melbourne High.

Bongo Starkie of Skyhooks fame was a mate from school, as was Michael Gudinski,  who was in my form for a few years.

bongo still does "skyhooks" shows around the palce and his lead singer is a girl whose name escapes me. My squeeze went to one of the gigs and said if you shut your eyes it sounded identical to Shirley

Thanks.

Oh and last week Eric Bana walked past me in the street and once when I was in Beverley Hills, I stood next to Yoko Ono outside a clothing shop.

It's hardly surprising that all these band members and actors who were popular in the 1960s and 1970s, and are now aged well into their 70s, are dropping off their perches, especially given the lifestyles many of them led. ^_^

Not surprising, but 2016 seems to have seen an inordinate number of them taken. I honestly can't remember a year in which so many prominent/known people have passed away (and I'm 64).

I was at that gig as well ... but can't remember anything about a support band. Wasn't there an issue with the weather or something, and the concert was cut short?

Memories ... I must have seen Madder Lake at some point, but it's all a bit of a blur to be honest.

I saw Madderlake at the Trak venue about 4 years ago. They were really good. They opened with the Salmon Song. Of course they did their biggest hit 12 lb toothbrush. But best of all they played/sang my favourite ML song Song for Little Earnest.

I play in an 80s cover band. I know Madderlake's former manager. She and Madderlake's bass player (Kerry McKenna) came  to our last gig.

Hello. Is anyone still reading this?

I checked again and Madder Lake opened for the Rolling Stones at Kooyong. I was at that concert as well, hence the confusion.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
