Rooke joins Melbourne coaching panel

It feels like Roos assembled together a relatively older coaching crew aiming to teach the players the fundamentals of footy.

Goodwin, now, is putting together a younger team. Hopefully the 'enthusiasm of youth' translates into exciting and  successful footy.

four coaches now who were involved in the Cats era of success, Macca, Egan, Byrnes and Rooke

Lewis who's been at the Hawks

Goody at the Crows

Jennings at the Hawks and Dogs

Mathews at the Swans

plenty of premiership know how at the club these days

Pity they are all but Lewis on our side of the fence Abe

I like this signing. Got the absolute best out of himself as a player and was much loved at Geelong.

I would think that this recruitment might have been influenced by Brendan McCartney from his time at Geelong. He has an eye for good operators and good quality people.

Absolutely. You could argue that his coaching record has been hit and miss over the years. But we definitely seem to have found the perfect role for him. He appears to just linger in the background, imparting his football wisdom when necessary.

I knew Craig J when he was at Essendon (now known as Essendrug). Not sure about time at the Hawks.

Another great appointment.

I've had the fortune of being in a position to have the odd conversation every now & then with Rooke whilst he was a development coach at Geelong.

He's quiet and doesn't always say a lot, but what he does say is usually very direct and meaningful. He simply doesn't waste his words.

So what is McCartney's current job title? Do we have a head senior assistant to replace Goody? (sorry- couldn't open the link if it's covered there).

Brendan McCartney - player/coach performance manager

Regarded as one of the game’s best development coaches, McCartney joined Melbourne in February 2015, after coaching the Western Bulldogs from 2012-14.

He was initially appointed development and strategy coach, but in September 2016 was named player/coach performance manager in line with Simon Goodwin’s elevation to senior coach.

The role oversees the development of Melbourne’s coaches, along with driving the performance of the club’s player group. McCartney continues to work closely in player development with Matthew Egan.

I don't think we do have a 'head senior assistant' per se as it was really a 'senior coach in waiting' role but we have lost 2 (Roos and ???) from the coaching group and recruited 3 (Egan, Chaplin, Rooke) so the emphasis has changed.

Very Geelong flavour in the coaching ranks.

Which is interesting, because if there's one team our game style seems to be modelled off, I'd say it'd be Geelong's under Thompson.

OMG - what year was he at EssUndone?  Does it bring new meaning into the term "injecting new talent"?

And what happened to Dew? Did he hold out for a better opportunity for an earlier head role at the Swans?

I believe it is Fruity Allison, the other we have lost

In terms of coming to us? i've seen/read that he couldn't move for family reasons but also been told that the Swans wouldn't release him from his contract to be a senior assistant elsewhere, it had to be a promotion to senior coach.

The other thing I like about Rooke is that he was a super fierce competitor and was as hard as a cat's head. A genuinely tough footy player.

The likes of Oliver, Trac, Brayshaw, Weideman, Harmes, Stretch, ANB, Kent, Hunt, Wagner and Hogan will benefit enormously from his influence.

Nathan Basset. I'll keep repeating this gentleman's name in any thread that I can. But welcome aboard Max.

Can't wait for Robbo to interview him in his typically ebullient way!

So Max, remember that day down at Kardinia Park (2005) where I booted seven goals on you including a bag in the last quarter, to lead the Dees to a famous come-from -behind victory?

Egan had a shot on the siren too from memory.

I have spoken to someone who works in the Footy Department at Gold Coast and asked how Rooke was regarded there.

He said he is a star and will be sorely missed.

Thats good enough for me to be happy with him coming to the Dees.

He's going to have special responsibility for rookies ... to be known as Rooke's Rookies.
