Amazing what finals chances and even a premiership do for member numbers. The Dogs finished last year on 39,459 members, so a massive increase of over 7,000! Using an early figure of $150 average per membership that's an extra $1,050,000 (plus extra merchandise etc.). With North they finished with 45,000, so would be down $750,000.

Some observations from the membership tally so far. Although we are substantially ahead of past years most of the substantial leap in memberships happened between late October and late November. Since then the rate of increase through to early Dec and then late Dec has been at the same rates as previous years or even slightly less.

So the total may not be as much of a leap as the present numbers are showing as maybe we got a lot more member earlier than in the past probably with direct debits.

We seem to usually maintain the rate of increase so that's around 3000 at this point which would put us around 42,500 to 43,000.  However, if through the preseason and the early rounds of the season the team shows the improvement we are all hoping for there might be a larger increase. Here's hoping on all counts.

Posted this back in December. Unfortunately looks to have ended up being a bit too accurate. As it has turned out the big increase stayed in that early period of late October late November. Since then the rate of increase dropped right off and won't even maintain the 3000 gain back then. It's looking around 2500 up on last year.

I find this really interesting because it indicates that the team's massively improved performance this season has not caused any noticeable increase in memberships once the season started. All the increase happened last year. Begs the question, what does the Club have to do to get people to come on board. I guess one short answer is make finals this year. But you've got to wonder why people haven't got on board once the performances starting coming in the season.

We need the next generation(s) of kids in schools

with sustained finals campaigns we will get them.

We are Melbourne, a city and a football club

That's massive for the Cats. We should be somewhere around where these clubs are, around the 50k mark. Hopefully some success will get us there

I agree DC. 25 a day shouldn't seem that much but I cant help feeling that all's aboard that's coming aboard ( this year )

Am very impressed by this though. Very encouraging for the future. Should be interesting to see  how we come out of the blocks for 2018 ( membership wise )

How far into September might well influence things also. It's simply the human condition. We like to be winners.

After the dross our club dished up for the past decade 41,700 paid up members is a brilliant number. As a 50+ year old I do marvel at the number of younger supporters who attend our games. There are lots. Good on them and may they soon be rewarded for their bravery.

150 per week for the next fortnight! Surely that is achievable somehow to reach 42,000 (especially with four more games at the "G")!

You are assuming they are paid up members.  I know the Bulldogs and North give away a massive number of free memberships, I'm sure we do this as well not sure of the degree of it though.

I'm pretty sure freebees and the $1 memberships given out by the Saints (?) earlier this year don't count. You have to have paid $50 or $60 for it to be an official member.

By the way I thought those $1 memberships (pay the balance later) were quite clever as the Club got the contact details of prospective new members. Perhaps something the new sexier Melbourne could try this year.

41,861 - WOW!

  • Over seventy members overnight. It seems that all the closet supporters have finally realised that we are a serious finals chance. If we beat North on Saturday, we might even reach 42,000 members by cut-off on 31/07/2017.

Superb. Winning is that important

the Southern side of The MCG looked sparse last week, but the Northern side was pretty dam healthy, we are growing slowly

victories against teams like Nought are so crucial to keep the cogs rolling...

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
