I would assume that James Hird will get plenty of support from his family and friends and the best treatment money can buy. There is no need for anyone to express concern that is not genuinely felt. Neither his condition nor his recovery is dependent on a few more sympathetic words any of us might utter.

It irked me that he used the inanimate 'this column' to express 'its' concern rather than the more humane 'I'.  So, I would have preferred he said nothing at all about concern rather than make insincere platitudes.  His exposure of the mistruths would have been just as powerful without that last line, afterthought.

I guess, I feel that anyone who has reached the end of the line, regardless of the enormity of their sins or being the master of their own demise, is deserving of some compassion simply because they are human and in a very dark place.  Just my feelings tho'.

Not sure how much support Hird will get from his family and friends.  He seems to have burnt them off over recent years.  He is a lonely man in a dark place; yes of his own making.  I for one, wish him well in getting his life back together again.

Smith is an old school journo and in the old school it was the standard of professionalism to say "this column believes" or "the author regards". It was seen as amateurish to say "I believe" or "I think".

But Smith is also not a particularly warm character and even a vocalised expression of compassion would probably come across as rather stiff and formal.

The only credible show of emotion from Smith would be a sledge at a batsman who's been sat on his backside by a nasty bouncer.

LH...i certainly acknowledge your view and appreciation of the vernacular but it might be carving cute to differentiate a pronoun ?

In the middle of last week the editor extolled people to "leave James in peace" while he recovers his health.

On that very day he/she gave Allan Hird headline coverage.Then on Saturday 3 pages were devoted to Danny Corcoran's views on the victimisation of his good mate. All part of a concerted effort to stir the pot - and reignite the emotions that James is struggling to manage.

It is the AFL that is showing compassion right now.. Fitzpatrick and McLachlan have worn damning criticism and innuendo  in an effort to leave him "in peace.. Hird's mates are the people preventing the football world - and Hird himself - from moving on

I rarely agree with Sheedy but I do this time when he says Hird '...should never have been allowed to coach without having acquired experience as an assistant beforehand.'

Shame he said the exact opposite when Hird was appointed.  If he had spoken up back then he could have saved everyone a lot of grief!

Funny, he would have been the only one. (However this poster expects that from a martian. Sheedy can probably barely remember his own name these days.)

After the Tim Watson Experiment (that great '60s acid rock band), EVERYONE from Wayne Jackson down to the Dimboola thirds bootstudder knew that you don't appoint a coach without previous experience.

And look where it got them. In this poster's opinion, all richly deserved ... apart from the damage to the competition, the sport, Aussie sport as a whole, the players, the families of those involved ... most lousy coaches only take their teams to the bottom of the ladder.

I've often seen Carro describe her opinion as "Fairfax media believes ......"
Always just thought it saved her from getting personally sued.

Your post seems to be critical of Roughead. I hope that's not intended. I expect most footy supporters, whoever they support, wish Roughy well (except when his team plays theirs)

Sorry. My post was critical of essendon having a big celebration to welcome back their drug cheats when the real comeback story leads out the other team.

The point is roughy is actually a returning hero and a great story and deserves to be captain

But essendon will welcome back their drug cheats with a big march to the g and pre game stuff and reward one of them with the captaincy.

On the same night roughy returns. At the same ground. 

The expectations on Roughy have been set pretty high in my opinion all the same.
