2016 Player Review - # 5 Christian Petracca

After missing all of 2015 due to an ACL injury and then breaking a toe in the off season, Petracca made his long awaited arrival on the AFL scene in Round 6 against St Kilda. It was a muted start with glimpses of potential but he earned an AFL Rising Star nomination by his fourth game and he showed enough during his 17 game debut season to suggest he is poised for a long and successful career.

Got a box set of great Dees games for fathers day and was watching the 94 final against the blues on the weekend. One thing I noticed, apart from the fact we played good tough footy, was how similar Swartz and Tracca are in the way they move around a footy field. I have very few memories of Swartz playing as I didn't see much footy in my teen years as I was too busy playing various sports to get to games and they weren't really replayed but the similarities really stuck out.

Lets hope Tracca has a better run with injuries and becomes some where near the player Swartz was!

Amazing talent, steals the ball from packs like a Bont, holds his feet like a Gary Ablett (both of them) moves around like a Koutoufides and kciks the ball like a Nathan Buckley.

Just needs to learn not rush his kicks and handballs; but he is going to be a ripper.

Seemed to do a couple of special things each week without really dominating at any point.

He is a special talent who will become a genuine star when he works out what it takes to succeed at AFL level.

Agree, he's building. He's not alone and that's fine. A good preseason ( and gee we love to place that caveat on them , but it's so true ) will see him step up a bit again. He may not hit his real straps til 2018. That's ok by me.  He has tenacity for the game. He also sees those little 1% opportunities and pounces.. Great peripheral ability.

I'm pleasantly surprised there's enough material for a boxed set.

So was I. It only has six games, one is the Geelong win last year, one the 94 final, one a final in the 80's against Sydney I think, and the other two I can't remember.

Now that was an enjoyable game.

Ahead from the first bounce and the only real question was whether we were going to win by 100 points. Sean Wight played a blinder if I remember.

A stress free final............. o perchance to dream !!

Back on topic......... Petracca is a must improve next year (20 plus high quality possessions per game) if we are to move up the ladder. Like others I think he can do it..... one of my few reasons for being excited about the club.

I haven't watched that one yet and you just gave away that we won! ;)

How long until he puts off contract negotiations?

Already extended to the end of 2018 - Petracca is one player I'm not even slightly worried about.

Agree with everything but the "kicks like Buckley" comparison. Has a long way to go on his field kicking in my opinion

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.  The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particular

TEN YEARS AFTER by Whispering Jack

Things have changed in the more than ten years since the West Coast Eagles decimated Melbourne by 93 points on the MCG early in the 2014 season. The two sides had not met at the home of football in the interim until yesterday when Melbourne won by a comfortable 54 points to remain in contention for this year’s finals series. Back in those days, the Demons were in the midst of their Great Depression but they have since tasted premiership glory and experienced a long enough period among

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
