Some interesting comments on some high profile yet to be finished deals:  http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/afl-trades-2016-tigers-poised-to-land-dion-prestia-20161018-gs51ll.html

"Negotiations between the Hawks and Suns have been tense throughout the trade period, with Hawthorn now insisting pick 10 is their final offer for O'Meara.  The clubs could go into mediation on Wednesday in an effort to break the deadlock".

Under the deal, Richmond would give the Suns their first pick, as well a future second-round pick...The Tigers would gain Prestia as well as a second-round selection this year, strengthening their position in the coming draft.  So Richmond will end up parting with pick #6!!

I really like that GCS are playing hardball and not get unders for their elite players.  On a smaller scale we did the same with Lewis and seemingly with Hibberd.  Its good that the so called 'power clubs' are not getting away with using their might to crap on smaller clubs.

Always great to see the "power" clubs brought down to earth, however, would like to hear from @Redleg again. He said it was agreed already, and I thought it was for this years 2nd rd pick (maybe it was simply "a second rd pick?). Over to you RL

On another note, what is Robbo doing over at the Herald Sun with this:-

Bombers preparing O'Meara mega trade

"Essendon is plotting to undermine Hawthorn's pursuit of midfielder Jaeger O'Meara by offering Gold Coast a mega pick deal."

Really? O'Meara has nominated Hawthorn as his preferred destination. The Hawks are said to be close to reaching a deal with the Suns even if it's done through mediation.

The article smacks of cheerleading by an Essendon supporter who happens to be the chief football writer at the newspaper. Strange indeed.

While Robbo has form with cheerleading for Essendon, what he's saying is not too dissimilar to the situation with Mitch Clark and Melbourne. I seem to recall that Clark was adamant about moving to WA only to see a last minute change of heart when Melbourne stepped in with an offer attractive to both Clark and Brisbane.

My info was that we had agreed to give the Bombers our 2nd round pick. I assumed it was this year's.

I think we may have changed the goalposts this time.

I would be stunned if the deal wasn't done, whatever the price.

Thanks Red.

I have faith in Mahoney. Not worried at all.

Just finishing off his MaiTai, Tuktuk is waiting.........

Could we get Tuktuk for pick 68?

We should do some wheeling and dealing in the late stages of the trade period to try and get back in the first round. Apparently Saints will trade 23 and 36 to get back into top 15. That is brilliant for them and I hope we can do similar.

Start with trading Dunn, pick 68 and pick 85 for pick 47

We then trade pick 29, pick 57 and pick 47 (1151) to GWS for pick 15 (1112)

Good trade relationship with them gets it over the line. Very bullish about us trading up to improve our draft position

I was told Richmond had a board meeting to discuss if they should trade pick 6, anyone know if that's true?

Please be true.

I thought West Coast got him for pick 88.

Hilarious if true.

I do just want to put it out there @Wiseblood and co, that if Richmond decide not to give up their first rounder and the deal stalls, would we be interested in making a final offer for Prestia?

Let's say we could get our hands on an early second rounder and we packaged that with next year's first rounder, would that be enough to get the job done from the Suns' perspective and would you do it?

You needn't guess what I'd do. :P

Wow, that's a thought! We seem to be in no hurry to close the Hibberd deal, which might allow us to hang on long enough to see whether Richmond can land Prestia or not.

If we get Hibberd, then making a play for Prestia would mean giving up all our early picks on older players for two consecutive drafts. So we'd carry a big hole in our age profile into the future, leaving us to one day risk the fate of Norf, where all their top players retire or leave over one or two years, with little or nothing coming through to replace them.

Or is it feasible to get both Hibberd & Prestia and then try to trade into these drafts (2016 & 2017) at a later date?

Edited by Akum

We'd never offer Prestia the money that Richmond has and it's why no other club has bothered interjecting in their stalemate with the Suns -- no other club will touch him at $750k.

The only reason Richmond are paying such an outrageous contract for an above average midfielder is their cringe-worthy desperation to secure their "marquee" player this year, after members were baying for blood over Treloar's snub.

A laughably run club, unless being run into the ground is their objective, I guess.

The filth wont do that deal as it leaves them with less points then they already have for their F/S selections. Significantly less in fact as Pick 85 comes with 0 points.

Best we could hope for from the filth is upgrade 57 to 47 or get in on the Cloke deal and get Pick 61 from the Dogs.

Hopefully they get these guys involved, especially old mate second from the left.

Frankly I would rather see Dunn go anywhere else than the filth, especially if we could do a deal with Brisbane, GWS or the Suns, and gain something back in return (like Rockcliff, or another pick player). Worst case ever would be if Dunn ended up at the Pies with us subsidising his salary!

The Tigers need to get their head out of their asses, what you offer a player will often come back and bite you at the negotiating table, telling a player he's worth x amount but then trying to convince the club he's worth nothing

they're going to have to hand over pick 6

personally i'd be really keen to keep that pick, but they're desperate to at least look relevant.

Rich could back themselves and offer their 2017 1st pick and work to finish (dare I say it, at least 9th) ie pick 9-11.

They then get a good young player this year to start refreshing their list; there recent 1st round efforts have been poor:

  • 2015: pick 11 traded for Yarran who hasn't played a game for them.
  • 2014: pick 12 selected Corey Ellis, yet to find his feet
  • 2013: pick 12 selected Ben Lennon, a good player wallowing in the 2's who they have tried to trade out
  • 2012: pick 9 selected Nick Vlastuin, sort of getting there.

2016: pick 6 (to be) traded for Prestia who will probably be a very good player them.

If I was a supporter I'd be worried about their top end talent under 23; they have none!  That will come back to bite them!

1.5 trading days to go and barely a change to their list.  So same coach, almost the same list - maybe they have accepted they will be bottom 4 next year!!

Agreed, interestingly one of their young players i thought looked alright was Ben Lennon, and he's attracted seemingly no interest from anyone, i wonder what the issue is there.

It'll get done, but it'll be pick 6 and their second rounder for Prestia and either 22 or 24

True, I didn't mention them as my mind the swap of 2nd round picks more or less net out and they don't really help their stock of young top end talent, to get their rebuild underway, properly!!

wasn't yarran traded for 19 last year? i seem to remember they held their nerve and refused to hand over 12, as the mini-giants (dwarves?) requested.

Good pick up DA!

I did a bit more checking and Yes, Richmond made some trades and ended up with pick #15 with which they selected Daniel Rioli, who has good potential.

Their young talent going forward still looks pretty thin, more so if they give up pick 6 this year.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The Demons return to Casey Fields (aka the Field of Dreams) this Saturday to host the Saints in Round 2. If you’re feeling lucky, head down the Monash for some family-friendly footy—you might even walk away a winner. The first 5,000 adults through the gate will receive an entry into the $10,000 helicopter ball drop. With Casey’s infamous wind, what could possibly go wrong? Closest ball to the pin wins. So spread the word, get down there—and good luck!

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwin’s summer of love. Many issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.
