GWS 2014 draft

pick 4: Jarrod Pickett

pick 6: Caleb Marchbank

pick 7: Paul Ahern

pick 23: Patrick McKenna

pick 24: Jack Steele

Entire first and second round draft picks wiped out after two years. This club is hemorrhaging talent yet still has one of the best lists going around.

God I hope Carlton finish last next year, gave up their future 1st round in the Marchbank deal.

Marchbank, Pickett and future 2nd (high 30's) for

45, 58 and future 1st (top 5?)

GC will have 7 picks in the first 2 rounds next year? (5 future picks + their own 2?)

I don't....GWS do not need a #1 overall pick added to their list.

That's true... I think I would enjoy Carlton being punished more than GWS getting another #1 pick though, particularly if Marchbank and Pickett don't perform. Imagine the Carlton supporter meltdown.

Says a bit about SOS in my opinion, 5 top 25 selections and every single one of them is a bust, only one playing semi-regular AFL footy is Marchbank

7 senior games in 2 years is semi-regular?

I love seeing Carlton suffer and if the trade was with just about any other team I'd be in complete agreement with you. Unfortunately in this case I think that GWS will end up with yet another high draft pick and further strengthen their already scary list.

He at least looks an AFL-level player, he's missed a few due to injury

It's Geelong's future pick. Not their own

Ahh that makes sense - AFL site just said a first round pick, assumed it was theirs

Carlton has traded for GWS pair Caleb Marchbank and Jarrod Pickett and as well as a second round pick in 2017. They give the Giants picks 45 and 58, both third-rounders, and a first round pick in 2017.

Marchbank is a quality young tall. Steele a very solid midfield prospect, he could play the next 150 games at a solid level. I'd give both of them ticks.

Ahern's done 2 knees in the same year. But no issue with where he was taken. Just bad luck.

Pickett's had his own injury issues as well.

The thing about all of these guys besides Steele they were probably all drafted ahead of expectations because GWS were going for needs (Marchbank) and the cream (Pickett, Ahern, McKenna). When you've drafted a bunch of gun talls and a midfield of Shiel, Coniglio, Kelly, Whitfield, Scully, Greene etc you can afford to make a few riskier picks.

Overall I think SOS does a good job. Not a great job, but good enough. He was always going to miss on a few when he had that many picks. Now GWS have the advantage of the academy which means they can develop their own players and pick the ones they want which can make it easier to avoid busts and even avoid injuries.

i reckon you're overrating Marchbank a bit, he's pretty good but given where he went in the draft, disappointing

Ahern and Picket it's hard to get a read due to injuries but leaving the club for little return given both were top 7 selections is disappointing

Steele i reckon has held ground in terms of his worth so that's probably just a pass mark

Mckenna was speculative so that's fine

but i reckon if you went over a list of the amount of first round selections the Giants have had and how many have turned out to be below expectations for a player at that pick, i think it paints a pretty ugly picture.

ironically they're the only club in the country that wouldn't view 5 top 20 selections walking away without great return as not being a disaster. .

was reported in hun today that when dion had talks with the ferals he sought assurances that dimma would not be sacked. really do question his judgement

can just imagine the board at end of 2017 discussing dimma's sacking and saying "but we can't because we gave dion assurances that we won't" - lmao

So you think he'll last to the end of 2017?

The impact of the AFL's concessions to GWS that allow them to repeatedly access the best talent can't be understated. Taken in isolation, their 2014 drafting & trading would have sunk most clubs. Look at the difference in the 2014 period, comparing us to them:

GWS Brought in: Pickett, Marchbank, Ahern, McKenna, Steele, Finlayson, Griffin, Joel Patfull

MEL: Brought in: Petracca, Brayshaw, ANB, Stretch, O Mac, Vanderberg, White.M, Lumumba, Sam Frost, Garlett

And at the same time...

GWS Lost: Tom Boyd, Jonathan Giles, Sam Frost, Kristian Jaksch, Mark Whiley, Jono O'Rourke

MEL Lost: Mitch Clark, James Frawley, Sam Blease, Daniel Nicholson, Mitch Clisby, Shannon Byrnes

Marchbank should've been pick 15. Instead he was pick 7 for needs. If he was pick 15 clubs would be rapt to have him. Compared to Hugh Goddard who was the other tall defender they were interested in I think they made the right choice. Of course Jake Lever is better than both.

The other thing to remember is that the other 4 guys all would've stayed at most other clubs but GWS have to push them out due to list space and opportunity. They sell them for cheap because they have to. Other clubs would keep them until they got healthy and a chance to play. Ahern would've played 15 games in his first year at the Dees, instead he doesn't get a chance and then does 2 knees.

They also get 30 for 49. It's an even and quality top 30 this year. So they get 3 really nice bites of the cherry for the price of 4 spots in the first 13. Fair deal.

A bit of a whacky way of thinking here but:

1st rounders: Oliver, Weideman (both low end age 2015)

2nd rounders: Melksham, Hibberd & Lewis

3rd round: McKenna

I'm so pleased with the team of Viney, Mahoney & Taylor - smart operators in this area now, wait the wildcard that's coming IMO.

Hawthorn's first pick is 88 - the pick from the Sam Mitchell deal so it was worthwhile after all!

I was really hoping for some kind of freak trade-up of picks into the second round like the last couple of years. Oh well, can't get it every year.

I think we have 47, 69. 84, 102 and our complete 2017 set intact.

That's pretty good since we brought in Weidemann (effectively), Hibberd, Lewis, McKenna.  With Dunn out

We started with 29, 48, 66, 84, 102 -

So we got Hibberd, Lewis and McKenna for 29 and Dunn

His arrogance and smugness cost them a chance to play in the Grand Final.  While I'm not sure if you are taking the pi$$ or not with the above, I'll presume you aren't, and will wonder if that;s part of the reason why he's being offered up.

I like sticking the boot into Hawthorn as much as the next person, but Smith was arrogant and smug for lining up to kick a goal on the siren?

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
