Did McGovern have a better season than Tom McDonald?

IMO yes. McGovern is huge and has very few deficiencies in his game.

He's a gun no doubt, but looking at his numbers Tom McDonald has him covered in a lot of key areas, but I could be missing some numbers.

WCE fans are not nervous when he is about to dispose of the ball

I hope max speaks to his team mates. Put the head down and said this is what i want to be. Not the most talented on our list but the most doggedly determined to be the best (possibly Viney comes up to the mark) who probably surprised Roos, remember the pre season camp.

No idea how Selwood got the captaincy over Danger.

Not only is it a fait accompli that he'll win the Brownlow & Cats B&F in a canter, of all players' to lead their teams to wins this year, he's done it the most.

I'm not sure what you mean here. Dangerfield isn't the captain of Geelong. Ironically, it's Selwood.

Don't get people thinking Pendles was stiff.  he was below his usual best this year and carried an injury

you dont get in on reputation alone.

Yeah, big deal if he misses out. What about all those years when our captain courageous was in career best form and carried our team on his own. Should have deserved 1 or 2 AA!

Well done to Maxy though!

I know its the AA team and every line is full of guns, but the followers would be amazing to watch in a real game

The AA team always makes me a bit wistful about this being the only country where our sport is seriously played.  How good would it to see these guys get pitted against an elite team from another country?

Oh well, never going to happen, but it's a nice dream.

They picked the top three intercept markers in the league. T Mac is quite strong in that area so if it's now the criteria of choic then he's in with a shot next season.

The only howler was Boyd. Credit to him for playing at a high level as a 34 year old but a lot of his game was based around cheap possessions in the backline without an opponent. Simpson to me would've been a more worthy selection. Jack Steven was also very stiff to miss out and was worthy of a bench spot. One of those two ahead of Boyd and I think they pretty much nailed it this year.

Jakovich pulls no punches in a scathing attack on Chris Connolly (for criticising the non selection of Lachie Neale)

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/west-coast-eagles/eagles-legend-glen-jakovich-hits-out-in-scathing-attack-on-chris-connolly-20160905-gr8wj7.html

"That's his opinion, but look, he's a guy that's come from a club where he played and didn't win a lot of games, so he was always involved in a losing culture…He came to Fremantle... then he went back to where it all started. Went to a club and was part of a football department that actually created a losing culture. They actually started throwing games. And what was that called? Tanking. And they got fined from the AFL…And he wants to tell me how to pick an elite team, and he's been involved in tanking and crap clubs all his life? He wouldn't even know how to spell elite."

Nasty.  Not very becoming of Jakovich.

The personal attack on CC aside, I was quite sad to read that as it reminded me of the worst times as a supporter.  We will never be allowed to forget the 'non-tanking' era and all those at the club will be tainted by it even tho we were the 'fall-guy'.

Urgh. Bontempelli. The most overrated player in the league.

Gee, he's a good player. Gets 24 touches and kicks a goal. Is that seriously good enough to be in the 40 man AA squad? It just shows that the selectors have been swept up in the media hysteria pedaling his overinflated worth.

Glad for Gawny though. He's been a shoe in for the last month.

Big fan of your work Adam but thought at the time this was an extraordinary post. Surely anyone who's seen even a little bit of Bontempelli can tell after limited viewing that he's a bona fide freak. Players of his type who are just as effective up forward as going through the midfield are like gold dust. If I could have any player in the league at the dees it'd be him.

I didn't see the game today, but did check his stats after seeing another "Bontempelli is a bonafide star" according to an article on the AFL website. He was pretty quiet last week. Sounds like he's 1 for 2.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
