Oh yeah, supported the Ds for only 11 years by 1976.  Was away for the R22 , Collingwood Melbourne/Carlton Footscray match.  We hadn't won at Vic Park since 1968 either.

Nearly quarter of a century by 87 and I was OS.

Only omen I have now is I am away again

Moved to Sydney in 87. I had to stop my brother throwing the TV off my balcony at the end of the Prelim. I have hated the Dawks from that day on. I cant wait to do them in next years Prelim (or this years!?!).

Remember it well, was heartbreaking, was sure we'd break the drought, we were the form side. Smashed Footscray and Geelong who made the five. Pretty sure that last Carlton shot hit the post, that's how unlucky we were

Buckenara's kick sailed through goal post high. The 15 metre penalty made it easier and of course has become part of Demon folk lore.

Hawthorn got thrashed the next week by Carlton in the GF after having the week off.

Of course one never knows what might have happened and that is what makes '87 so special.

One of my bad memories of the Preliminary Final (and of course there are many) was the way two Hawthorn players (Tuck and Dipper if I remember correctly) engaged in a co-ordinated two sided bump onto Robbie Flower. Not illegal but a very low act

23 years in the wilderness ..........almost a whole city barracking for you..........having the wind for three quarters at Waverley and then that unbelievable end to the dream. After the siren the crowd was hushed. People wandered the car park trying to understand what had happened that day. It was very special.

No it's not '87 but it is a very good feeling.

Wow, that's pretty bad. I've heard a couple of stories like that from that game. I was only two at the time so wasn't there and can't remember it.

From memory, in final round 22 - we had to beat Pies at Vic Park and hope/rely on Favourites, Carlton beating Footscray. Dogs were already in the final FIVE at that time. They were fifth. 

Think we accounted for the Pies easy enough 4 or 5 goals. Bear in mind we hadn't won at Victoria Park since 1968. 

Simultaneously Blues and Dogs fought it out at Western Oval. Robert Walls had a chance to win it for Carlton - and put Melbourne into the finals.  Think he missed, kicked a point and tied their game. 

 

This gave dogs 2 points for the draw. Put them ahead of us and in to the Final FIVE.

 

From memory, think we were on a roll and could have gone far into September.

 

Think dogs got done easy the next week.

Significantly, We ensured Collingwood won their first ever wooden spoon. Not sure if it was certain before we beat them.

To their credit, no spooner had ever won it by also winning so many games in a year.

 

So in 1976 we missed the finals from a Robert Walls miss. 

Only took another eleven years.

Last round - Melb needed to beat Collingwood at Victoria Park. Collingwood won the wooden spoon that year so were pretty hopeless, but it was still a danger game for the Dees. To get into the 5, we needed to win and for Carlton to beat Footscray - which was on the cards as Carlton was the far better team.

Dees won, but Carlton ended up drawing with Footscray. So the Doggies got 2 unexpected points which kept them in - and us out of the 5 and finals. 

Fun Fact 1. Was a at a club function not so long after and Stephen Smith said it was a real disappointment as there was a real belief in the playing group that they would have given the finals that year a real shake.

Fun Fact 2. Was at the game and was belted by an old bag of a Collingwood supporter with her umbrella for abusing Collinwood players all and sundry. Great win but very sad outcome. 

The Carlton v Footscray game was played at Princes's Park with Carlton the favourites.

Walls had the chance to win the game with a kick he duffed and Bernie Quinlan touched it on the goal line. That was the end of the game and the game was drawn.

Wearmouth knocked out Laurie Fowler at the first bounce and he woke up being carried up the race and had to be restrained trying to get back on the field.

That was his game finished. We played with one man down

2 weeks earlier at Moorabbin Ray Biffen planted a kiss on Trevor Barker in front of the St Kilda cheer squad before the first bounce. Sent the crowd into a frenzy.

1977 was a year of hope but that was it until 10 years later in 1987 when that moment when Dunstall goaled at Geelong being my greatest memory at a Dees game.

 

How do you blokes remember these games so vividly? The only one i recall some of was 1970 GF standing on Large Beer cans. Plus Bluey Shelton at Windy usually losing and Carl at Moorabbin,free barrels...
