There's been some discussion as to an overhaul  of the AFL national draft to enable some form of equalisation for teams that perennially miss out on the finals. The Demons who have been out of the finals since 2006 would be the major beneficiary if this were to apply in the upcoming draft. The Brisbane Lions, who won't even finish last this year  but have been pitching for a priority pick,  would be next line, having not made the top eight since 2009.

The panel on Fox Footy’s On the Couch this week discussed the idea of having an equalisation round after the draft's first round but, it's unlikely that such an idea will be adopted this year. 

The AFL which has always been inconsistent in its consideration of priority pick applications might well decide to give the Lions a priority pick  in order to help prop them up and prevent them from becoming more of a basket case.

However, right at this moment, based on current ladder position and traded future picks (and excluding free agency compensation and trades) the current likely order for the first two rounds is:-

Eleven picks within the first two rounds to the Suns and Giants. There are beginning to be some constants in life! Expect these two be become "powerhouses" for a long time!

It is worth noting that our second round pick could be pushed up the draft order due to the academy bidding process.

No-one there who would draw a 1st rnd comp pick.  However, Freo or Richmond may get an early 2nd rnd which would be in the range of pick 20 to 25.  Freo traded out their 2nd rnd pick (#21) but I would imagine if they do get a 2nd rnd FA comp pick it would still be pick 22?  I wonder if the AFL has thought that thru?  Make it up on the run, I guess.

Not entirely sure, I don't think the Academy (and Father/son) player picks (under the new 'draft points' system ) affect the draft order per se - they dilute the 'quality' of player(s) available to the following bidder(s).

Having looked at some of the draft predictions there are only a couple of tall forward types in the top 20.   

While technically we don't have a 2017 1st rnd pick, I think of Weideman as that pick - its just that we got him a year early and as a 'bonus' he has a year of development under his belt. 

Had we not traded the pick out we would be scrambling like everyone else to find a KPF to line up with Jesse. The trade out of the 2017 pick was a brilliant move by our team!!  Obviously, they knew we wouldn't draft a player like Weideman this year!  So I'm not at all fussed that we don't have a 1st rnd.

I always enjoy draft/trade period and am again looking forward to see what creative maneuverings our team can conjure up! 

A very different draft forum this year. 

The whole eos trade/draft  circus has a complexion quite foreign to us. 

Might be a relatively quite time save for one or two snags. 

I don't mind , means we already have much of what we need. No more divining for that magic elixir of 'success'

My only ponder as to getting back into the fray is that as some exit the club we might garner some later picks which we again bundle to Giants or Suns for a swapsie.

Callum Twomey said last week that he thinks Weideman would be a top 5 pick in this years draft.

I would like to see us go after GWS picks 14/15. We have a good recent record of improving our draft position. If we can trade some players out for low picks then trade them as points to the Giants for a late 1st round that would be a good result for us. Even if we dont use it as a pick, trading with a late first rounder gives us some more bargining power should we need it to get a player in.

is about the only way I can see us getting back into the draft really.

Could you imagine the outrage in the footy world if we were given something extra.

I mean, our record warrants it, but given the massive improvement and talent on our list now, the reaction from other teams and fans would be extreme.

For once we don't have a gaping hole in our list that needs immediate attention.

I thought we were too slow last year and even at the beginning of this year. Now we seem to have pace across every line. Hunt is electric but there are plenty of others with pace.

Key positions are looking good. 

Never been a better time to go best available.

 

 

For us it's all about trading........

I just dont see many on our list ( other than the non tradables) that will hold any currency. Dunn & Garland are contracted the later for another 2 years .  Who on our list under the age of 24 would we want to move on ?

Terrible that the AFL is changing the goal posts this late in the process when some gentlemen agreements would have been discussed. 

They are trying to make it harder for the northern clubs to get their Academy players but in reality it hurts clubs like us because it is unlikely we could do last years trades with GCS and GWS to get our 2 1st rnd picks.

we will trade p26 to move up the order, no doubt, & some players.  Our pick numbers will all change during the trade periods.

I expect we will have a top 15 pick, but we won't take many kids this year,  as we need maturity more from the 2016 Trade/Draft period.

 

I expect us to recruit kids from the 2017 draft, moreso.

if we can somehow land a top 15 pick i'll be blown away. can't wait to see how it all unfolds. still not completely sure how the academy/draft/points system works, but have a vague idea and am happy to understand the general vibe..

Things the AFL amazingly wont see coming -

In order to maximise the number of 'valid' draft picks held, clubs with academies will delist a higher number of players on the fringe, to then be relisted as rookies or with the junk draft picks which open up once the existing picks are cashed in.

The proposed 2Nd rounder for Hibberd has us coming in at around pick 44 in the 3rd round for our first live selection. 

The dees will no doubt shop some players Goodwin doesn't require to land another pick in the top 50.

Wouldn't be surprised to see us trade into the first round. For example pick 26 + Grimes compo + pick 44 for our pick 8 back (academy points)

Except that pick 26 is going to Essendon for Hibberd.  Please provide a plausible scenario for this acquisition of a top 15 pick.

So plenty of doubt here.

Oh dear, won't be surprised, will be totally astounded if that happens:

• Pick 26 is going to Essendon for Hibberd
• You must have missed the heap of posts above about the AFL closing the loop hole on trading down for Academy picks
• Grimes compensation - you have to be joking!

I'd be trying to get one of those GC picks which apparently are now 21, 22, 24, 27.  They've already got 4 and 8 and will probably end up with 6 for Prestia and another early pick in the O'Meara deal.  They won't be able to use all those picks in the 20s and they need players with the exodus.  ANB, Wagner, even Dunn.  Might get even two of them.

By my cheroot that sounds good so why not offer the suns our first pick in 2017 plus their choice of Dawes or Garland or Dunn or Grimes to add to their experience stock and in return they can give us pick 8 ironically and pick 27 and then the Drugs can have 26 for Hibberd and give us 37 back and with 8 we go after Mitchell from the swans or perhaps English or Marshall in the draft and we have 27 37 44 and the residual guys above to trade in an experienced mid and an experienced forward to help Bernie and nat...and we are smoking!
