His refusal to kick costs us often. it cost us 2 goals yesterday. He halts forward momentum by looking backwards and sideways for handballs on most occasions he gets the ball. 

In saying that, besides the 2 mistakes that cost us goals, he was reasonable yesterday. The MacDonald's, Vince, Tyson and N.Jones also cost us goals through poor decisions and skill errors so he wasn't on his own.

I just don't think a team can have too many players that just want to handball as a first option ALL the time. We have quiet a few including Oliver, Tyson and most of our defenders. Cant think of many players with this trait in the top teams. Perhaps Priddis.

IF he gains the will to kick the ball he will improve as a player.

Agree I thought him serviceable to good yesterday!!

I haven't seen Matt Jones listed in the "Outs" this week. I assume the author of the OP will show appropriate humility and respect for M Jones by apologising at the first opportunity after he plays on Saturday.

I think Matt Jones is a handy player and he is underrated by many here. I hope he gets another year.

He's quick, he's fit, he's hard at it and he generally has clean hands (that one horrendous fumble aside).

He just needs to eliminate the odd brain fart from his game when he gets slightly indecisive and delays taking the first good option.

Frost and Oscar McDonald do much the same thing. Perhaps it's just inexperience.

 

His running is excellent.  Many times when I have been watching him at games he is always busting his gut sprinting into space to give his teammates an option. Many times (ala Watts), the effort is not rewarded.

I also have noticed that this season in particular he has an excellent long handball. Maybe he has always had it but I haven't picked it up till now.

Really hope he goes well and can prove some of the doubters wrong.

It is frustrating to see him play a really good game, then see his name automatically appear in the "outs for next week" as if by default.

 

At least the match committee has realised that Bugg is a more limited footballer than Matt Jones. His omission is long overdue.

He can actually hit targets and should be played forward of centre off the wings.

Dont play him down back. Hesitates and props/stops too often and often loses yardage here. Get him up forward and force him to hit targets inside and targets inside 50. One of the few players that has shown he is capable here at times. The Hulk/Watts will be the beneficiaries and so will our results on the scoreboard.

He has improved ! A keeper! for mine!

I like Matty Jones, and I think this has been his best year by far. That injury came at a rotten time for him, he was in his best ever form.

And...,last  week was his first AFL game back for a couple of months, and he played well for about a half, and should improve next week.......BUT, and no one has mentioned this,...isn't he 28!!!

For that reason I'd play Buggy, Trenners, and ANB  ahead of him.

I would agree that he has moved up the list of discards with his efforts this year, and at times I have actually been pleasantly surprised. But, anyone thinking that he only needs to eradicate the brain fade moments from his game in order to be a regular, should take a breath.

He has been around far too long for that to happen. "Smarts" are not a skill that can be taught, by even the greatest coaches. It's either there, as in the case of Oliver, or it isn't.

Hnmm some wisdom there Fawlty!! Can agree to summation! But you do need depth, I think he deserves another go, particularly considering the improvemnts as noted!

Picket, I agree that he has had his best year with us (limited sample of course), even better than when he finished top 10 b&f. He is very handy depth if he continues to play the way he has this year. He should also be proud of his efforts, considering so many of us were shaking our heads, wondering why he was kept on..

I guess he is another who goes some way to prove that a footballers best years are late 20's.

Maybe I should look at our list profile and smile, instead of being a sad sack.

he's just dropped off a bit lately. his best is better than jones' best

bugg is only 23 and jones will be 29 this year and already reached his peak. i know who i'd be investing in

Bugg usually plays more of a tagging lock down role mostly inside daisy. Can't see Matty doing that. More an outside player who gets into space for the receive.

For the outside guys just play whoever is willing to bust their gut and who can hit the most targets by foot with reasonable degree of difficulty. Chipping around the back and out wide to a plus one loose near the boundary excluded.

Different players, but I don't think that Bugg has a very high ceiling. Jones got pilloried for his fumble last week, which is fair enough, but you'll find that Bugg fumbles quite often under no pressure. He's not worth investing in IMO.

Agreed. Bugg's a fringer. A very sloppy kind of player too. At times he appears lazy with his disposal and other times he is just inept (see the shot for goal last week - not the first time he's kicked like that).

Personally i think Jack Grimes is more of an upgrade on Tom Bugg.

People are being a bit unkind to the author OP. The full title of the thread should have read Matt Jones has played his last game for MFC....this weekend.

I have said this before about MJ so apologies for repetition. Roos and the other coaches clearly rate him as a best 22 player. It came as no surprise to me he was brought back last week after only a couple of VFL games. Of course he has limitations but he is quite quick, super fit and gut runs back and forward as an important link man. And most importantly he plays the role he is assigned.

When i made these comments a while back (mid of last season IRC) i compared him to Cheney at Crows as a player who has got the most out of his talents, continued to work hard and improve and play a role. Some scoffed, saying Cheney was a journeyman who couldn't cement a spot in what was then a pretty average performing mid table side. Well there he was last week playing a role and looks to be a regular best 22 in a side that will finish top 4. Despite what some here on DL say/think Jones will be a similar player for us and will keep his spot in the side when we are top 4.
