FAREWELL JACK GRIMES

Whilst not my favourite player overtime, it would have been great for him to play this round, especially when Trenners returns. He is sitting on 98 games played , and it would be a crying shame, if, indeed , he did not play 100 games with the club, he has always barracked for. Also, in my opinion, there is a strong chance he will be culled at years end.He deserved to play this round on form alone.

I would like to see Jack play 100 games but forget sentiment, we should pick the team that has the best chance to beat the Hawks, unfortunately for Grimesy, i agree with the selectors. I thnk there is more than a strong chance he will be culled at seasons end, he's finished if he can't get a game ahead of players like Michie, Oliver has already gone passed him. Hope he plays 2 games at some stage this season

Very unlucky.

Bugg seems to be playing the role Grimes does out at Casey. If Grimes hasn't made the 22 by the end of Round 21, i hope they give him those 2 games. Guy bleeds red & blue and deserves to get to 100.

Grimes needs to get back to his best, and fulfill his potential. In the short term I think he is better off in the VFL - where he is getting midfield time. I am sure others will disagree, but he is in the VFL for a reason, and that is because he wasn't up to the senior level. So I think it is a matter of doing what he needs to do - to make that level. VFL is the place for him atm IMO, and he is improving. When that spot does come up (in the senior side) Grimes will be prepared.

I disagree with the notion that he was not up to AFL level. He has been the ultimate team player for MFC and it would be pity for us not to acknowledge it.He has proven to be a quality person. See the annoncement of Jack T and AJck G embracoing him ( surely he would be wishing he was joining him).

Unfortunately he has been the scapegoat for being appointed Captain and for the teams performance. Now that he can play without the reponsibility of "Nominal "leadership he can be given a chance to show his true worth.

Very good pints indeed IMO.

Grimes papers have been stamped i think, which is unfortunate because he's all heart but unfortunately a limited footballer,

real shame because he's a fantastic bloke and bleeds red and blue.

I think he'll get a game soon actually.

I don't see Harmes, Stretch, Wagner and Bugg all holding form for the rest of the season, and when they slip he'll get a crack given that ANB and Newton didn't make the most of their opportunities

This week would've been perfect for him to run out with Trenners, but no room for sentimentality I guess.

Should come in for Kent.

Yes, the one I was most surprised to see included.  I think he's been quite disappointing this season apart from the odd cameo, usually once the game has been decided.

Aure you don't mean Harmes?

It's all been said before.

So we want to give him 100 games on the notion he may have a son that plays AFL?

Or because we're not going to play finals we want to get as many games into our young players as possible and build continuity amongst the group.

No, we want to give him 100 games because a football club is made up of human beings, and building culture and looking after players is important to the general success of the organisation.

Why do people (not you necessarily) consistently forget that players and others in a football club aren't robots?

Agreed Neeld logic would say that the 2 games are wasted on him if he's not in future planning, but I think Roosy has the balance right. I think both Dunn and Grimes will get a handful of games each in the remainder of the year, and the younger guys will also get a good taste for it

I'm pretty sure his exit papers have already been signed.  Roos has shown before that once he decides a player is gone they have virtually no chance of a senior call-up.  I can see the logic in that, just because it does nothing for your team to give game time to someone who won't be there next year when it could go to a developing young prospect.  Still I really hope they do the right thing by Jack and give him those last two games before showing him the door.  Put him in against sides we have no chance against like Carlton or Fremantle and it won't make a difference if a few kicks go astray.

Sadly it appears he is dead in the water.

One would think this agent has him on the Market right now.

Good luck for the future Jack as the current FD does not value you.

Jamar didn't get a farewell game, so I'm thinking Roos and sentiments don't go hand in hand.

Grimes is a really good depth player, he gives you everything and can fill a number of roles. Whether he is better than depth I don't know. Defensively he is pretty good, but offensively he can be hit and miss. I think if anything Hunt has taken his role, and his superior leg speed has really helped us improve as a team, which is something Grimes just cannot compete with.

I would hope he can get 2 more games, as he has been a wonderful servant of our club and captained us through the worst period in recent history, and did so admirably and graciously. The season is not even half finished, and injuries are starting to mount, not to mention young bodies are starting to tire. Grimes may still be in with a chance to get to 100 games.

To be fair, what more could Jack have done this far to warrant selection? Has been amongst best every week he has played at Casey.

Exclude his 2015 form. In 2016 he has done everything required to warrant selection. He deserves to be selected.

Agreed. Jack's form in 2016 has been very good. He was good in our pre season matches and each week at Casey (would be a favourite for the JJ Liston at this stage). In fact he has been in the emergencies for 8 games already !!

His marking, ability to win the footy, tackle and pace are all good.

Yes his kicking is at about 65% (from 2015) but I have seen improvement in 2016.  Grimes is better than T.mcd, Lamumba, Garland in terms of his footskills. Tell him to kick to Jesse whenever he gets it!!

I think Roos has marked Grimes as 'out' like many coaches seem to do, sometimes at their detriment. Roos prefers blooding youngsters in the hope they develop.

Grimes would find a home elsewhere in 2017 easily.

I want Jack to be given a fair go and hopefully gets in on form and discarded on concrete thinking.

Lots of limitations but I can't believe he hasn't been selected over Kent.  Harmes also needs a 4 quarter performance.

No- because he deserves to play, been the most consistent player over the last 5 weeks, should be a good enough reason IMO.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
