My cousin and my wife's uncle both Richmond supporters said the same thing.  May not be saying much, but they definitely "came to play" same as the Pies last week. The fact we could match them, kick clear and never be headed despite multiple challenges bodes well for our maturity and our belief.

Yes well I said this same thing last year. In fact it will be the only thing that will prevent him achieving Champion status. Surely someone in the coaching dept can straighten this flaw out! I agree it is hard to umpire on at the time but can't tje MRP go over the tapes and call some of these guys? At least name and shame them and tell them they are on notice. It may reduce the staging. And any review should highlight head ducking to the likes of Razor Ray, that it is best not to reward the Rances of the game who duck their head into every second tackle! 

A small reflection on how well we're going is the fact that no one is lamenting the absence of Jake Melksham. It's great to have so much depth finally. 

And the crowd in the members last night was like what you experience in a Grand Final.

How bizarre. I was just wondering how Jake would be going if he was part of the team the last few weeks. If he was getting a game, who's spot would he have?

Its a good question to have no answer for. In next year we will have Melksham and most likely a more ready to play version of weideman. Exciting times. 

Some of these players who can play, but can't get a game may be attractive trade bait come year's end. If we wanted a gorilla-handling full back for instance. Or another ruckman.

I'd hope that Melksham will allow Salem to play on a wing, so then what you're doing is putting pressure on the mids and half forwards to keep their form up. Whilst I've never rated him, if Goodwin and McCartney can turn Melksham around, he is definitely a goal kicker, no matter where he plays. More goal-scoring power once again.

I've gotta be honest and paraphrase that oft re-quoted Mark Neeldism and say I really didn't see our turn in form coming. We haven't beaten really strong teams yet, but I now believe we can. The leap in just four weeks from a psychological perspective is almost staggering. It's a credit to the players and to the FD. Not only should we beat St Kilda, I think we will beat St Kilda. Exciting times.

Well in the wash up from this round it transpires that Jack Viney is cleared by the MRP and Alex Rance is suspended for 2 weeks 

( as he should have been )

 

I'm very comfortable with the suspension ; I'm very uncomfortable with the criticism of Alex Rance on the basis that he's a Jehovah's Witness as alluded to by several posters.

A  person's worldview should hardly be the basis for pointing out their short-term failings.

There are few among us who could withstand that level of scrutiny although evidently some on Demonland and to those I convey my congratulations on their achievements 

 

 

Lumumba has been fantastic. Ferocious intensity, run and dare and attack.  I'm happy to sacrifice the odd error or holding the ball for what he provides. Compare him to a grimes or garland? 

He may seem a bit reckless but a Big part of the attacking game plan is based on risk taking.

I really don't want to get into an argument about this, because I know we disagree politically, but... let me say this. Goodes was certainly capable of doggery on the field. I didn't particularly like him as a player, but acknowledged his footballing brilliance. However... the 'person x is divisive' line is usually code for 'this challenges my status as the majority'. The booing of Adam Goodes had something else at play here and I know from having read your previous posts for the last 7 or 8 years that you're aware of this. 

I hope I'm not jumping down the rabbit-hole here...  

I agree that Lumumba is way better than Grimes and Garlo. Shame that the game has pretty much passed those fine foot soldiers by. (How's that for a corny line?)

Forgive me if this has already been mentioned. But i think the team had over 400 possessions against Richmond. That is Geelongesque from their successful period. Only sides with really good skills can get away with that. It is otherwise overusing the ball, which is why there were so many turnovers. 

I'm really impressed with the young guys - Hunt & Wagner. The fact that the side is better, has some structure and a workable game plan makes it easier for young players to slot in. In the past it was almost impossible for young guys coming into a side that was poorly coached and was a complete rabble that expected to lose. 

An aside. I sat in the MCC members (I'm also a MFC member!!!) yesterday between some Tigers supporters. The guy on my right was really pleasant, and we had a nice chat before the game, and even during the first quarter. The guys on the other side were middle aged aggressive nasty loud unpleasant types. So unpleasant that I had to move at qtr time. I told them that I couldnt put up with their behaviour any longer. They were proud of their achievement, taunted me and high fived each other.

As the match unfolded, I guess I had the last laugh. (PS. I presume the only real pleasure these bogans got for the rest of the game was watching Rance coward punching Watts; right up their alley.)

I paid a bit of attention to this conversation between Riewoldt and the umpire on the replay. I thought Riewoldt said " watch Pederson " I went back to the replay of Riewoldt's goal and Pederson wasn't anywhere near him. I may be wrong, but that's what I reckon I heard.

I'm not sure when Pederson gave away the shepherding free kick in the marking contest but this could have been from his comments to the umpire creating awareness. 

Finally looking like a side on the up, list management and playing style seems to have been impressive of late. Hard to find the 4-5 players that would be delisted at this stage apart from maybe 1 or 2, and I really am loving it. 

Heritier Lumumba has shown in the last two weeks how pivotal he is for the next couple of years, his speed both offensively and defensively are pivotal to the back 6 and his ability to compete in the air for the most part has been pretty exceptional.

What the uncontested possession differential said to me was that we were working harder to get into space, getting lots of it by ourselves, but then wasting our opportunities with overuse and poor disposal. This is why we were 7-0 in centre clearances in the first quarter and were smashing them in uncontested and contested possessions, yet were only a couple of goals up.

As I think it was Vince who said post-game, we played 'okay'. The effort was there for the majority of the match, but we still had lapses in concentrate and threw away a number of good opportunities to score. Not to mention handing momentum to the opposition a number of times from silly, unneeded turn overs. In modern footy, momentum is such an important thing to have. You want to ride it for as long as you can.

Having said all that, I really enjoyed watching us play. It's so frustrating at times and in the heat of the moment I lose my temper, but when I step back from it all, I love that we're now prepared to take risks and when we do, 7/10 we're scoring and scoring well. With this, we now know that we have to suffer the consequences of a few goals going the other way, as we play this bold, attacking brand. And that's exactly the attitude Geelong had.

Our ball movement at times is certainly reminiscent of Geelong circa 2007-2011, but our brainfades across half back in particular, are positively un-Geelong. We need to eradicate these from our game either by getting better ball users back there or learning the best time to pull the trigger and which risk is ultimately the one worth taking to open the game up. I don't think we've found this balance yet, but it's early days.

And it sounds like you wouldn't be able to sit next to me. I'm loud, obnoxious and almost every week royally [censored] off and taunt opposition supporters. I too sit in the MCC (and yes, I am a paid up MFC member), so it's not just Richmond supporters.

He'll be ready to go after a couple of weeks at Casey.

We've mentioned a few weeks ago the 'bromance' between Jesse H & Jack W & how they seem to combine so well.

There's a similar synergy happening between Jeffy & Kent which makes them both much more dangerous around goal.

It's great to see that having a settled forward line gives them a chance to really get to know each other's games.

Melksham would offer a few things that are really lacking for us atm.

He has good pace - which our midfield lacks, he has a bit of flair - our midfield is mostly blue-collar, he is a good kick - we are not a team of Andrew Gaff's.

I'd have him in for Jayden Hunt, similar player types, Melksham obviously the more proven.
