Changes v Richmond

Bugg would be the first player of all time to be dropped after a 29 possession, 9 tackle game. I know he's got his limitations, but getting the ball, or tackling the opposition when you don't get the ball, are fairly handy skills that we'd like in our side, I'd have thought.

14 of his possessions were contested. He's going nowhere.

Vince and Jeffy (if fit) are absolute ins.

Outs??? Brayshaw got a head knock. Oliver didn't do a lot but what he did was fine.

Tough one.

probably give oliver a rest. no need to grind him into the ground, he's still young. i'm sure they planned a rest for him along the way

Watching a replay now,

Yep, we can't drop Oliver. He is just silk personified in close.

It's just good to know,  that whatever the outs may be this week,  either through omissions or injuries,  we have at least 2 players who are walk-ups (Vince and Garlett (body permitting)),  and a couple busting down the door (ANB, Petracca), so really in terms of quality we will not be going backwards.

First time in a long time there is a sense of quality depth.  Love it.

It's difficult. Our team really gelled today, but I'm sure Garlett and Vince are shoe ins and I want to unleash Petracca before he does another basketball injury. Plenty of midfield depth now, especially with Tyson back to fantastic form. I like the way we've backed Wagner and Hunt, but I'm not sure who we'd drop from our more senior guys to accommodate for our 18-21 group

I think we need to find room for Vince and someone may consider themselves to be very unlucky, or in Oliver's case, managed.  Jeffy though hasn't played, not really trained since April 2nd, he may need a run in the two's just to get match fitness.  Now that the cap has been introduced we're seeing players getting exposed when they're coming in and they're not at 100%.

Brayshaw passed the concussion test but he had a serious concussion pre season and his fitness suffered. He may miss/be managed to play at Casey where its less intense and he can build fitness and form. He was ok today.

Matt Jones is in hospital having his ribs checked.

Harmes played out the second half not moving well at all ?corkie.

2 to watch for the rest of the week.

Problem is, he makes a huge amount of errors. Someone's got to be dropped and numbers aren't everything (or Oliver would be the automatic out).

Personally, I suspect one of Brayshaw or Oliver will be rested (may well be Brayshaw if he did get a bit of concussion) and Vince will come in. Garlett may need another week and/or a run at Casey to get his touch back. If Garlett is 100% fit then, for mine, it's out of Bugg, Harmes, Hunt and the other of Brayshaw/Oliver to make way. Bugg and Harmes, IMO, make more mistakes than the rest. But no one deserves to be dropped.

Petracca et al. need to keep knocking the door down at Casey. Their time will come.

Oliver possibly needs a rest. Hunt will be dropped. Lumumba will stay. Tyson will stay. Matt Jones may be under the pump.

Whoever misses out will be stiff anyway, I just doubt they'll drop Hunt after he performed on debut. If he can do that on debut, not only should he be rewarded with his spot (and I expect he will be), but he should could very well improve next week. I think Oliver could be effective against Richmond on the inside. If I was choose who to leave out atm, I would leave out Frost and Brayshaw. I know Frost adds something different to our side, but I'm still not convinced about him, and Brayshaw still looks short of a run IMO.

Tommy Bugg is absolutely no chance to get dropped. He is what we have missed since S.Powell.

Hunt out- Bernie in

Maybe  Matt Jones for Jeff Garlet (as a grown man I cant call him Jeffy)

Agree that Brayshaw looked a bit underdone today - though that heavy knock can't have helped. But if he can get through a match, he's too creative a player to have running round at Casey.

There's no room for them/would be hard to bring them in, but Grimes and Garland didn't do their call-up chances any harm at Casey.

Vince is an auto in for Bayshaw who still looks off the pace. No other changes for mine.

I'd probably give Oliver a rest next week, he wasn't covering the ground quite as well as he had been.

and i really think we have one to many talls and Frost might go out for Garlett

Out: Oliver, Frost

In:  Vince, Garlett

Yep. This looks right to me, mate.

Lumumba? Really? Have people watched the last two weeks? He is so important for our run off half back.

Contrary to some other opinions I think VDB will be coming back via Casey.

His form wasn't great before injury and with the display today from both the Casey players and the seniors he won't just automatically slot back in once he's fit.

Bernie will come back in and I reckon Oliver will be given a week off.

I know Roos doesn't like dropping a debutant after their first game but I think Hunt will be unlucky as Garlett should hopefully be back, but the again Garlett could be another 4 weeks away... who knows!

This might be controversial and I love his attack on the footy and the man, but I reckon VDB is a depth player. He was vital last year with his attack and toughness, but now we have everyone playing that way. His disposal isn't strong enough and he doesn't get it enough. A handy depth player, but should make his way back via Casey. If his performances demand a recall then great, otherwise he gets his next game on the back of injury.

His kicking is more direct this year.

Because our blokes are making options for him instead of standing still...

I'm presuming he just hasn't been 100% (or even close) in any game he's played this year. So we are going off about 15 games last year to judge him. He definitely shouldn't be an automatic inclusion but I'd still back him to get back in the side reasonably quickly, I really thought some of his defensive efforts were a clear step above his team mates and his height gives him an added bonus. That said, half forward seems our strongest spot for competition for spots. Kennedy, Kent, Harmes, Petracca, Brayshaw, Vanders, plus Frost can be used as a defensive half forward like he was today.

Rest Oliver? Y'all are crazy. He'll love playing Richmond. Especially if Richmond get all clampy on our other inside mids, he'll have a clearance field day.

I don't think he needs a rest at all. He just wasn't used as much in the guts today, probably not needed.

I'll have to watch the replay but there was one bit when Collingwood were mounting a comeback and Oliver turned on the intensity in the middle, hitting contests and tackles and made sure there was not a Collingwood clearance. He has game sense.

Vince in. Hunt out.

Garlett only if completely fit. Watts out. Just kidding. Lumumba out. Damn it just kidding. Anyone with a niggle, I'm sure we'll get our weekly mystery injury.

Yep. Creates time space and uses It as well or better than our other mids after only 4 games.

Wld only omit under a "managed" scenario to allow his bod to recoup then straight back In.

Didnt get alot of It today but It's what he does with It. Quality over quantity

I don't know who is in or out, but I do think Lumumba and Tyson hold onto the footy that half a second too long.

At some stage I would like to see one of them get a rest, even if it isn't VFL, it messes with our flow.

I would drop Brayshaw back to the VFL purely for fitness reasons, still looks unfit, and could do with a full game on the ball.

Likely INS for me would be: ANB, Vince, Garlett.

OUT: Tyson, Lumumba or Frost/Brayshaw. Petracca will need another few weeks in the VFL, as will Trengove.

Anyone who thinks Tyson or Lumumba will be dropped has a personal issues with them, no way will or should they be dropped, ....king ludicrous statement

Fresh from watching the replay,  out: Brayshaw, in Vince. If Garlett's fit he comes in,  but I'm not sure who for given our performance,  I'll let fate decide that one.

Anyone who suggestsFrost,  Lumumba, Tyson out are idiots.  I'd keep Hunt in too.

Yeah I don't like either of them as footballers, and call for Tyson to be dropped most weeks. Nothing new. I can't like them all.

I think this is the most realistic change too, although could be a wet moist night where clearances are key and would love Oliver smashing into the Tigers.

Watched the 4th quarter replay, and I automatically regretted suggesting Oliver be dropped

He was manic and full of energy in the final term and so creative, same with Angus. Both will play vs Richmond.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
