Swung past at about 10:30 for an hour. 

The Casey group were just milling around having a bit of a laugh whilst the rest trained. Looks like they had done some light stuff and a few of them did goal kicking before heading off. Someone else will know more I'm sure. Dunn, Brayshaw, Weideman etc. Not sure if I saw Lumumba. 

Dawes was doing running with Crossy and other support staff. Sprints and jogs. 

Ben Newton was wearing the training jumper not singlet which usually means participation at some stage with the main group. Can't recall see Spencer, ANB or Trenners.

Anyway, the main group were broken up in to smaller groups including Macca taking Salem, Wagner, Tyson, Matt Jones and Oliver for a kicking drill. Forwards practising some goal kicking. Other mids working on ground balls and so on. All pretty standard stuff.

Of note to me was towards the end of the session Goodwin assembled 18 players to form a team and run through some game scenarios to make sure they had positioning and game plan set up. 

That team was

Forwards: Hogan, Frost, Watts, Kent, Garlett, Ben Kennedy

Mids: Gawn Tyson Viney Jones, Wings; Matt Jones, Bugg

Backs: Garland, T Mc, Wagner, Jetta, Salem, Vince

By this stage of course the Casey guys had left and Pedersen had left as well. Harmes and Grimes grabbed green bibs to be token defenders. Vanders, Oliver, Petracca and a couple of others watched from the sidelines. Might only be of interest to me and/or a coincidence but Matt Jones and Bugg were both playing as inverted wingers. 

They did a few around the ground stoppages and then set up a 3 points up with 30 seconds scenario. Hogan went as the 7th defender to CHB. Watts came up as an extra midfielder covering the far side of the ground. Gawn was very defensive with his taps. The kicks all stayed boundary side and after Frost marked in a pocket then centred the ball Gawn was vocally saying "should just take the shot Frosty". 

Vanders did some contested marking with Rawlings and handballing after the training finished. He appeared good to go. Jones did fast hands work with Macca. Ben Kennedy did extra ground balls. Salem and Viney had shots for goal. And Hogan and Kent took turns kicking to each other on the lead. Jesse still dropped one or two and wasn't happy but otherwise most stuck. Kent's kicking was mostly great but he just slices them every now and then. Just has to keep being balanced over the ball. Hogan kicking to a lead is a thing of beauty.

    it's the opposite of extroverted wingers. they're shy, don't talk much and keep their own counsel

    Hnmm hope I'm not reading too much into this but Clarry Choo Choo demands inclusion into round1 

    No if's or But's and if he doesn't play you would want to know the rationale after him playing 3 Corker games in a row! IMV

    After NAB 1 and 2 I thought that, but I think his performance in NAB 3 (which I thought was quite solid) has put him right in the picture to play.  I really didn't think he would be to AFL standard for the first half of the season, but I think things are looking good for him to debut this weekend.

    I think he offers some real creativity and vision off half back, and I have a feeling he is playing the role the coaches give him very well.

    All 3 NAB games and being part of the 18 running through match day scenarios on the eve of the season start?  I think he's very likely.

    Thanks DeeSpencer and love the info on the lineup - although as you alluded, Angus and Harry were presumably on lighter duties because of Saturday game.

     But it begs the question as to how do they find room for Angus and VB.

    I think we can assume now that Grimes is out with Michie from the 24 last week and then it gets down to Lumumba for Wagner and Dunn for O-Mac. But after that finding the next two is really, really tricky. I had Matt Jones out for VB or Angus, but to my way of thinking the only other options once that is done is Pedo or Frost (prefer if both play against GWS though) or Oliver or Kennedy or Harmes - all very harsh omissions but VB was almost our best pre-season player until injured and we all know Angus is a gun. At the end of the day, I'm afraid I'd say bide your time Clayton, although I know he's an excitement machine. 

    It's a long season, missing Rd 1 is not the end of the world that some might think and if we happen to lose or have injuries, then the Essendon game is a great game for him to debut.

    Dunn and Lumumba were off the track by this stage. I think one of them, or even Oscar McDonald, will take his spot. His 2nd half was very solid against the Saints, but his first half was simply bad.

    Soccer term. Left footer on the right side and vice versa. Possibly signals an attempt to play more corridor football, or could be just a coincidence.

    By the way, Jack Viney did a handstand and walk today. Did a back flip the other week. I get the feeling he enjoys the gymnastics that the boys did.

    Not for the players playing on Saturday, they used to have a light run the day before, but not since Roos took over, Casey have a praccy game as well some time over the weekend

      The Dogs reigned supreme in 2018 with an inaugural AFLW premiership cup and the Demons matched this feat by winning the cup as the Season 7 2022 champions.Meggs wasn’t born when the Doggies won their first VFL premiership cup against the Demons in 1954. Covid prevented many Demons fans from legally witnessing the victorious 2021 AFL Grand Final cup performance between the Demons and the Bulldogs, but we all grin when remembering those magnificent seven third quarter goals.

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

      Ten seasons. Eighteen teams. With the young talent pathway finally fully connected, Women’s Australian Rules football is building momentum and Season 2025 promises to be the best yet. In advance of Season 10, the AFL leadership has engaged in candid discussions with all clubs regarding strategies to boost attendance and expand fan bases. Concerningly, average attendances in 2024 were 2,660 fans per match, with the women’s game incurring an annual loss of approximately $50 million.

    • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

      The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match.The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

    • CASEY: Brisbane

      The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
