Christian Petracca's toe injury (in full training)

Featured Replies

Completely agree Bossdog, the overreaction has been massive. I've seen players out in a group, around 5 or 6 of then, the day before a game (mid-season, not pre-season) having a shoot around with a basketball. Sometimes these things just happen, and you've got to be thankful it's just a minor toe (from club reports), and not more serious.

There's plenty of example's of random event's causing injuries like Tingay's glass incident a few years ago.

Wow.....The overreaction to this injury is mind blowing.   We have posters wanting to fine a player for an injury, other posters stating he must have been doing something stupid without knowing the circumstances.   Posters writing off the career of a player.....Posters becoming Doctors with diagrams of feet.

And I say how DARE he go outside when not required to by the footy club.   Doesn't he know that all 20 year old footballers sit on the couch and play X box, I just don't know what he was thinking.   Doesn't he know that it's a dangerous world out there?

Seriously, I jagged my hamstring walking the dog 3 days ago.   That's it     never walking him again. (It had nothing to do with my age ....Honest)

You cannot wrap players in cotton wool  and they have to have other interests than football 24/7.

Yeah your right, next time someone does an ACL they can just have lars surgery and rush back. No more trips to America to give them the best recovery possible.

Activities outside of football aren't the issue, it's the timing of it. I don't think people would have minded so much had he completed a pre season and played some games, he's still coming back from a previous injury.

Wouldn't have thought the Stinga example was a great one. He was p!ssed as when he fell wasn't he?

It ain't the toe it is metatarsal.

I don't have any links to it GTG, I haven't seen it noted in the media saying meta. Just what I have heard, can't say where though.

I posted a while back that no one who said it was a 'meta' had given a source for it being that bone.  I still don't think anyone has.    ??

Not allowed - Repetitive Strain injury.

Was only an example, been plenty of these types over the years, both inebriated or sober. Here's an article if you want to read about a few weird injuries http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/afls-weirdest-postseason-injuries-isaac-heeney-joel-patfull-join-bizarre-club/news-story/f6cdedf504e73de93b268e3a8224ffb3

These guys are professional athletes, but also still normal people who can get injured the same stupid way the rest of us can. Tracc was unlucky more than anything, but the reactions on here are horrendous.

check you pm's

I thought Roos comment about not putting pressure on young recruits was interesting. In fact it appeared they have their hopes up.

Obviously all at the club are excited about the prospects of Petracca and rightly so. Let's hope his toe heals well and that Petracca does not lose his swagger.

ch9 news described it as a "fractured toe" and showed him walking to training with one foot in an open moon boot

previous reports here said hairline fracture of metatarsal which is different

so, what is it? seems to be a lot of misinformation circulating

Yep....It would be much better if it happened in March or April.    He would be out for 6 weeks at the start of the season.

I'm sure he didn't do it just to upset a few posters on here.    It a shame....but as in life.......[censored] happens

A fractured phalanx in a toe would not need 4 weeks "off legs". I bet he was fooling around with mates with no shoes on though!

Injuries whilst training or playing are part of the game.

Yes players are entitled to pursue activities outside of football as is anyone in any job but if your coming back from a workplace injury you need to be doing everything in your control to get back, coming back from an ACL and still attempting  getting through your first full per season it wasn't the best time to being shooting hoops. Had it happened in twelve months time after he's played a full season I think the coaches would have been a bit more understanding.

I hope now this guy realises his body is his tool of trade and without it being fit he won't be given another contract.

Dream gone!!

Bossdog. I'm not overreacting. Im reacting.

In the context of his job he has of his own fault shown up as not fit for work.

That ought to be dealt with

Oh no!!   A young Aussie man fooling around, barefoot, in summer.  Terminate his contract forthwith!!

You joke but he has both a responsibility to his contract to say nothing of to himself for his career

He fcuked up. It was dumb and exhibits his naïveté early in his senior career.

I'm not wanting to crucify him.... Just teach him.

All very well, but we don't actually know what he was doing when it happened.  It could have been a freakish accident in a situation where only the most helicoptoring parent (or footy team/demonland member) would have said 'don't do that'.

The only indirect evidence we have that he was in fact stupid is Roos' comments. And even that may have been borne more out of frustration than with anger at bad behaviour. I guess that is motivating many posters as well since I reckon we'd have hardly heard a peep on the subject if it had happened to a player in whom we have no hopes of great things.

Roos is pizzed off.evidence enough for me.

 He doesn't give much away.

10 to1 he was being a young buck and stuffed up. Again not end of the world but good opportunity to teach a lesson.

seems it was a metatarsal (foot bone) and not a phalanx (toe bone). 5th metatarsal is the longer bone connecting to the little toe

source is good. lets hope bone is healed as expected after 4 weeks rest

Yeah he played basketball and broke his toe. It sucks for sure but it was a freak accident. What do you expect him to do, never play another sport except AFL again?

Umm Yes unless they are paying six figure sums

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
