I'd actually love it if they didn't. Don't talk it up, keep it between "the boys" and don't water it down by making it a PR exercise.

Agree. Don't need to go into the finer details, just glad Roosy took them out of their comfort zone. When the going gets tough next year i want to see who puts their hand up and show real leadership.

Well it didn't come from the club, it came from the bloke who ran it.

In this day and age most clubs would have called the 2 papers and asked for pics and a "story" to go with it. To me that is pretty secret in the AFL.

Maybe old mate was trying drum up business?

I'm guessing the details of what the camp would consist of were kept secret from the players prior to getting there, nothing more.

Putting them out of their comfort zone and challenging them in completely unexpected ways.

Not sure how sharing insights from the camp makes it a PR exercise. Several years ago I attended a high performance seminar where Mick Malthouse was one of the keynote speakers. At the time Mick was still the Collingwood coach. He spoke a lot of about mindset being the key to unlocking player performance. He shared some of the 'experiences' that he shared with the players on these camps that was really interesting. Some of his approaches where similar to those mentioned in the article. Personally I would love to hear how our new draftees responded and how the team came together at this camp.

I've had leadership training like this before with ex-SAS soldiers where sleep deprivation and both physical and mental limits were explored. It was tough, felt rewarding and worthwhile.

On the last day, you get hammered and when you think it's not going to end it does. We got a few cold beers and big fat T bone steak at the end and they promptly shoved a survey (about how we thought the training was) under our nose. Yeah, of course we filled it out positively.

Looking back on it now, it was a waste of time and money and that's the general consensus from the cohort I was on.

I hope the MFC and players get more from this type of thing than I did.

Just a blip on the pre season training radar and will most likely mean SFA come game time.

What was the reason your cohort were doing it though? An office job? A local sports team?

If done right I think there should be benefits for an elite sporting team in terms of physical preparation in testing your limits. 

I think the main benefits of this camp might be once they go on their next camp to Queensland. The staff can point out to the players that they've survived in really difficult conditions and so then when they have full support staff, hydration, food, comfy rooms etc there are no excuses. 

The follow up is crucial otherwise it will be all a waste.

It was for a large multi-national I work for and across many different business segments so there was a fair array of office-based to floor level leadership. Maybe that was part of the reason we thought it failed, because it was too much of a diverse group and not a 'team' in the true meaning of the word.

The follow-up was paltry and clearly showed the training provider was not prepared or equipped to manage the participants - rather ironic I must say.

I agree that if done right these types of things can be of value. The point of my post was to reveal that people shouldn't just automatically jizz in their pants by thinking it will be a clear benefit for the club.

I hope I'm wrong.

the more Roosy & the other coaches find out about their weaknesses & strengths, the better... weed 'em out one by one. the way to go.

Except every club runs preseason camps like this and it has actually been planned by the coaching dept and leadership/high performance consultants rather than a poorly conceived series of boxing sessions by a poorly qualified meathead with subpar leadership skills?
