NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS 3 & 7

Featured Replies

it's actually 2 in a weak + 1 in a strong

vs 1 in a weak + 2 in a strong

but ours are of a higher value, so it's about even

nice try though

creative attempt at shirting on everything

It's also 3 and 10 for 6 and (1-18). Obviously if we finish last next year and miss pick 1 it'll be a bit balls, but our reasonable expectation is to finish mid table, so pick 10 is about equivalent to next year's first rounder. The player will be a year further in to his development though.

The upgrade from 6 to 3 appears to be significant in this years draft. For that I'm happy to risk the downside on next years as yet undefined first round pick. It's all about getting us better sooner; this deal does that.

Clearly the FD has its eye on a player in particular and are taking no chances so have snared Pick 3. Who that player will be remains to be seen.

3-8 is pretty gloomy. Our first rounder next year should be 5-9, so for argument's sake let's say pick 7. Trading 6&7 for 3&10 isn't bad. Downgrading 29 in a shallow draft also isn't much of a sacrifice to make.

It's a bold move and I like it.

The rumour is Curnow or Weidemann Both tall forwards at Three.

If we finish below Carlton next year Iwill turn into a Tigers supporter and micro wave my membership then posting it back to PJ.

Let's say we finish 9th or 10th and end up with pick 10 next year. That means we just got a free upgrade from 6 to 3, which appears to be because we have our eye on someone we know would be gone at 6. Even if we have pick 6 again, it is still better to go from 6->3 then it is to go from 10->6. Shrewd move.

You get elite key forwards with early picks. I reckon we'll go with Curnow or Weidemann with pick 3. Not sure if Parish has that much of point of difference to warrant the trade.

Curnow also appears a competitor.. gee whiz, who to choose?

Not your problem, so don't worry about it. With Taylor now in charge as opposed to that imposter Pretendergast, i will put my faith in whoever we pick at 3 because we have clearly had that kid ear-marked.

Pick 10 is the more interesting one.

Anyone still think we got screwed on Howe? We plugged pick 29 directly in to a trade we were going to use Howe in. That was his market value.

Anyone also still care that we used 25 instead of 29 for Melksham?

Anyone still reckon they'd do a better job than the amateurs at the club at the moment?

I'm feeling so smug right now. Hehe.

We essentially swapped Howe for Kennedy:.. Way unders

Toumpas was traded to port for pick 29 - unders imo

Lose 6, 29 and a 2016 round 1 pick... Gain 3, 10 and 44 - square.::

So overall I don't think we have come out in front.

Nash most are missing what we have offered for next year. A 1st round pick That is not necessarily our original 1st round pick. If we finished last we could swap pick 1 for pick 4 & pick 18 with 18 being used for GC

The Weideman at pick 3 talk is interesting. Though Curnow was clearly the better prospect? Why not take Parish at pick 3 and then perhaps Weideman will slide to pick 10?

Interesting times ahead

We need a tall forward desperately.

We dropped Fitzy and the alternatives are Dawes ( groan ) Pederson ( 1 year deal ) or Frost ( best down back IMO )

Would be nice to see some extended highlights of Curnow but geeze he looks a good size. Could either buddy up with Hoges or given bursts through the middle. Lovely kicking action to boot.

Are you sure we can do this?

Seems to go against the spirit of the agreement

I beg to disagree Howe's highlight reel is a series of specie marks and Toumpas was an average VFL player.

We got what they are worth at this point.

Boiled lollies not chocolates.

What's Paul Little so happy about?

and i thought that was mr muirdock,,,,, he is in blue after all. probably pontificating P-3, then world is rupe,,,, or lacky

i think you will find it is our afl designated first round pick (i.e. at pre trade time). but nice try.

gcs17 will get the opportunity to trade it, not us

Love this quote:

'Parish tested at the combine but didn't stand out in any of the events. That shouldn't be a surprise or a worry. He's a natural footballer and one who steps up a level when the ball is there to get and offers plenty of dash.'

In case anyone missed it Roos, PJ and Mahoney have been crystal clear who they want at the club - competitors. Parish sounds like one. The Melk and Kennedy both appear to be competitors. Add these pick ups to recent pick ups like Petracca, Brayshaw, Viney and Vandenburg and we have a core of hard at it fierce players.

I love that the club has a clear, publicly stated plan for building their list and they have gone about getting the type of players who fit that plan.

I watched the GWS replay for the first time last night (withdrawal pains) and what stood out is how fierce the players were. Salem taking down Cameron and competing with much bigger players, his niggle and refusal to back down, the attack on the ball by Harmes (and his niggle with McCartney), Vineys manic tackling, Michies attack on the ball, Gawndogs energy and Hogans ferocity both in the air but also on the ground. Terrific to watch and exactly what Roos wants.

I have no doubt Watts was dropped for that game to send him a clear message that you get with the program or see ya round. He said as much a couple of weeks later when making a public statement that he was super keen to stay with the dees but knew he needed to get more competitive.

Players who we want (ie competitors) will want to come to our club.

Bring on 2016.

Oh and well done Josh.

I have one other highlight of Salem that I cant get out of my head, it was against Sydney and was just a loose ball win over Buddy, Salem surprised Buddy, beat him at a ball in the air (not overhead but not on the ground), duck and weaved and left Buddy behind looking very second rate. Was only something small but was full of class and composure which I am not used to seeing in our team. Still makes me smile!

lots of speculation that we will definitely bid #3 on both mills and hopper, forcing swans and gws to use their points, as those two boys are rated higher than any of the actually available players.

so effectively it becomes pick 5.

If we were able to snare both Curnow and Weideman come draft time, i'd be over the moon (moreso than if it were one of those 2 and Parish).

I'm sorry, but early draft picks in isolation mean nothing. Draft picks equates to draft recruitment. Our tanking years were designed to get early draft picks. It ended up being a massive fail.

Yeap agree, that was just such a shocking period I would hope that PJ has put in place the key people needed to make sure that doesn't;t happen again. Roos, Goody, Macca etc to develop these guys to where we need them to be.

While progressing on field to then be able to land some free agent gems over the next few years to push us to a solid finals team.

Nash most are missing what we have offered for next year. A 1st round pick That is not necessarily our original 1st round pick. If we finished last we could swap pick 1 for pick 4 & pick 18 with 18 being used for GC

Ummmmmm...that is clearly incorrect

The trade for mine was more along the lines of:

Howe for 29 - fair trade

Toump for Kennedy and pick 50 - probably did well there.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
