Oliver's a bolter who could easily be available at 7 if Essendon hold their nerve and still take Francis & Curnow and the Suns take Milera or Ah Chee.

There's a far greater chance of Oliver slipping to 7 than Parish. Essendon will not let him past 5; they'll be struggling to select their 2 from Curnow, Francis, Weideman and Oliver which makes our choice at 7 all the easier.

Neither Francis and Curnow are mids and they have are desperate for mids. They need tall forwards too, but at least one of 4 or 5 will be a genuine mid, not a mid on a hope and a prayer.

Stanton and Watson are geriatrics. The utility Goddard is old too. Cooney is a crock.

Hocking's a tagger.

Myer a scrubber.

Zaharakis has been disappointing the last two years and presents best as a high half-forward/mid.

Merrett is a quality small mid/forward. The older Brother's ordinary.

Colyer is a pygmy.

Heppell is very good and that's about it.

The club needs a big bodied forward/ruck? and a big bodied defender, i believe the club will go for Weideman and Collins at pick 3 and 7. Watts and Dawes will have become much better players or they will be gone. The latter picks could be used to pick up a tall mid.

We'll most likely have our pick of Weideman and Curnow with 7 (and failing that, either Francis or Oliver will be available).

There is zero chance we'll go after Collins that early; our defender stocks are perfectly sufficient for now. Our midfield is still our greatest weakness once injuries begin (see our second half this year).

well, i have to take taylor at his word when he said we will pick best available

if we look at best available this draft for 3-10 (maybe higher) i think it is really hard

there's not a lot between them and all have their weaknesses. in short i don't think anyone really stands out as best available

this is quite evident by the vastly differing ratings of the pundits and how those ratings have shifted in a short time

on a needs basis i'd like the best mid at 3 and the best tall forward at 7

who that is i've really no effn ideai, so i'll leave my trust in taylor et al

i'd be ok with my initial gut feel of parish/weideman but won't be disappointed if they go someone else

(of course i reserve the right to vent here in 2 years time if it all goes pear-shaped)

I can see us picking Oliver at 3 and Weideman at 7.

Oliver seems to have a better skill makeup to be a high quality player at the next level, especially given the amount of improvement he should have left in him. Given his lack of exposure to elite programs and his absence of preseason, I can see his game improving especially in his ability to win the ball outside contests. I imagine that Essendon will probably take Francis plus whichever midfielder we don't take. If we rate Oliver as being the best mid, then we should take him here.

Weideman tested poorly, which worries me, but that will probably be the thing that allows us to pick him at 7. If we're looking for a partner for Hogan, we probably need to pull the trigger here. He'll take time, given his style and testing, but but I suppose that's why we've taken he pick a year early.

A lot may depend on the types of players available later in the draft. Perhaps some good classy mids may fall through to a later pick? Or vice versa

Oliver isn't explosive, but he's got a great dance/sidestep that gives him time and flatfoots his opponent. Combined with good speed it creates an impressive image of him darting away.

So it's not just good speed for an inside mid, it's an evasive quality and preparedness to take the game on that most inside mids don't have.

Agree. His evasion is very good at TAC level. Just wonder how well his dance/sidestep will go when he has the likes of Jordan Lewis or Kieran Jack bearing down on him.

I think those traits transition well. At any level the element of surprise, aggression and speed holds you in good stead.

Having read lots of old bios recently it's quite common to see queries on stronger body types (see Wines and Martin) and whether they'll stand up against the bigger bodies at the next level. The good ones invariably do.
