it doesn't make sense comparing Cotchin to Jones - very different types of players. In terms of value to his side on a week to week basis I'd choose Chunk any day of the week.

Cotchin is a B+ footballer and Jones is a B+ footballer.  There's not a lot in it, but there's enough evidence on talent and stats for me to conclude one is better than the other.

:)

On the same page too.

Over their careers, Cotchin gets the nod. We're talking about present day, assumedly.  Right now I'm picking Jones and it's not a difficult choice.

Hogan is a once-in-a-generation freak. That's why he is the only name you can come up.

Kidding yourself

Tom McDonald was also getting big wraps in the first half of last year and his name was being thrown up as an early contender for AA, as his form dropped away so did the discussion surrounding him.

Kidding myself about Jones at Hawthorn?

He's had a vastly superior career and he's certainly more talented.

Right now they're on about par, which is why they've got the same present rating.  I'd still have Cotchin ahead.

Hope that helps.

Hehe..nice attempt to save face. 5/10.

You never have been one to shy away from the grand statement. That is what got you in hot water on the subject of this thread if I recall... :)

The comparison right now is of slightly more interest to who you'd pick in 2012. Hence why 2014 is a reasonable means of comparison, given what we now know about Jones' injury affected 2015.

Anyway, back to Oliver.

The fact you are arguing with me implies that your position is that Melbourne players get a proportionate amount of praise in the media as the 'big' clubs' players do. I doubt there is one person here that agrees with you.

Whilst I understand Oliver's skill sets being compared to Dangerfield, I think he may evolve into something more like Mark Ricciuto...with a little more poise.

Can you imagine??

I genuinely feel we have the makings of the midfield we've been waiting for;

Oliver

Brayshaw

Petracca

Viney

Tyson

Salem

VDB

Yes we've been down this road before, but this is different. They're each clean / polished / ferocious / unrelenting / driven / thrive on the contest / love body contact - and THAT is something we haven't had.

They're coming through together and will be driving the momentum shift, all with a reasonable target to kick to and an emerging mobile tap ruckman.

I can smell it.

While I love the look of that, I must admit that I was almost as excited by

Morton

Gysberts

Tapscott

Maric

Jones

Strauss (for a very short time)

God, what a bloody awful group of players.

Please keep on topic folks - this thread is about Clayton Oliver.

Thanks

This thread will continue to veer off in various directions, until we have seen him play. Annoying as it is, nobody can give informed comment yet, therefore the conversation gets sidetracked easily.

An improved version of Mark Ricciuto? Nice to see someone with some realistic expectations on the young kid.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'd hope that he's half as good as Riccuito tbh (who was a great footballer and leader) Let's remember, like Petracca, he's yet to get a kick.

Ricciuto only got eight all-australian guernseys. Lightweight.

That's what tempers my excitement too - add to your group Jurrah, Watts, McKenzie and Frawley.. we certainly looked like we had the cattle about 5 years ago... we certainly didn't though

4 competitive types in that whole list, and none of them a maniac like Viney.

Oliver (by reputation) certainly signals a continuation of a very un-Melbourne direction. I hope he is as crazy at the ball as we have heard. Madmen with skill, win finals.

Wouldnt we all love to see a winning final again?

I would say that Brayshaw, Viney, Tyson, VDB & Salem have already surpassed those on that list with the exception of Trenners who we can hopefully add to the new list with Oliver & Petracca.

We're already ahead of where we were and moving further forward...

I cannot wait to see him play, he seems to have poise that even when facing someone tackling him, he has time to side step, or the strength to still get the ball away. He seems to like to move the ball on quickly and not afraid to tackle and appears hungry for the ball. All excellent attributed that we have lacked in some of our previous mid fielders.

sooo... Clayton anyone?

The One thing I noticed startingly was his turn of speed with the ball through heavy traffic! My esteemed Colleague Dazzle man also noticed this!  In many of my vids of "Sir Robert" one thing stood as stark reminder of class and that was the ability to see peripherally those around you and decide in a blink of an eye which way to weave to esape heavy scrutiny from opposition! Probably why Rob lasted so long in the more brutal era's with not too much body damage!

Oliver has I believe, the same 'Uncanny Time" and if he matures as I expect him to will become One of the "Darlings" of the MFC young brigade!

Bring it on Son!!

I mean't that I believe his style of play will be more inside grunt and physically hurting opponents like we saw in Ricciuto, than the tear away pace from a stoppage or forward of the play we see from Dangerfield.

He has poise which is rare for someone so physical.

Ricciuto is one of my all time no Melbourne players and I think Clayton's 'style' may be similar, or, more comparable than Dangerfield.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.
