JT on Weideman: He never takes his eye off the ball, is strong one-on-one. He’s a good set-shot kick, good awareness around him." #AFLDraft

Β

Very happy with this selection.... and hes listed at 195 cms and 94 kgs

Love how we grabbed Weideman with the pick that belonged to Collingwood prior to trade week.

That'll drive some Pies fans nuts!

(Treloar's a decent consolation…)

SW listed at 196cm. Genuine KP height.

Welcome Sam. Hope you don't mind sharing the limelight with some kid named Jesse

May your love blossom for one another and may your date nights involve decapitating key position defenders together.

I still have to do a double take thinking that the grandson of a Collingwood Weideman is playing for the MFC. I hope he hecomes a gun, but a bloody Weideman....

His Grandfather help prevent us winning six in a row.

It will be bloody wonderful when is tearing up the Pies on future QB games.

love it.

We'll be seeing the comparison of Oliver and Weideman vs Parish and Francis for the next 10 years.

Here's hoping we have the better of the two.

Quietly after Oliver I was hoping Parish would slide, but am still very happy with Weideman.

Β

Great result, mid who should be able to have an impact right away and a very talented key forward who if he gets his body right i am backing to be the best player in this draft.

Hoping like crazy Mathieson doesn't get to the bombers in the late 20's.

Really hope he, Tucker or Balic slide to one of our late picks, but I doubt it.

Edited by ignition.

Weideman on SEN:

-His grandfather and Barassi are great mates

-His family is delighted about going to the Dees

-Had spoken to Melb a few times over the months and knew we would take him!!

-Delighted he is playing with Jesse...and who wouldn't be!!!!

NOW | Sam Weideman joins us after being taken by Melb with pick 9: "It's an amazing feeling. He (his grandfather Murray) is over the moon"

Sounds pretty happy to have joined us given the quick interview he just gave on SEN.

Oliver now on for a chat. Likes Roos, likes the look of the list...

Well I'm thinking 2017 grand final against the Pies, 30 seconds to go, Dees 5 points behind, Weideman marks 55 metres out on a 45 degree angle and pops it straight through the middle, siren sounds......

Actually, as a 12 year old, my father and I were five seats away from Murray Weideman in the Second tier of the old Olympic stand in 1964, and I remember looking across to him just after the famous Crompton goal. He was puffing heavily on a cigarette, shaking like a leaf...we laughed up-roareously perhaps to our discredit, but it was certainly funny at the time!

Oh well, they did get Howe. :)

To the Weidemann experts, is he a ready made key forward who can play straight away a la Jesse Hogan?

I am assuming 2016 will be a development year for him like it is with 99% of kids his size and age, which is fine. Just curious if anyone thinks he can play some impactful senior footy in 2016

Absolutely wrong Dees2014. We are not playing Collingwood.

So what. It's history. I started barracking for the demons watching the Grand Final at my Grandmother's house in North Sunshine. We was losing. My 17 year old daughter still asks me why I always back losers?

I reckon he'll be a great addition. It gives us so many options - height, marking ability, talent, passion to do well.

Go Herr Weidemann.

He has an awesome pair of hands and seems pretty clever too, perfect foil for Hoan.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.Β They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season.Β Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table.Β The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hopeΒ that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, MelbourneΒ captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles atΒ Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.Β  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, aΒ career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested),Β nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.Β

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
