2015 Player Review - # 26 Christian Petracca

Featured Replies

Revealed on Facebook today that Petracca will wear the #5 guernsey next year.

The other number brought him bad luck.

Surprised that people still have such silly superstitions in the modern age.

Will he also stop eating and drinking whatever he had on the day he hurt himself, or was it maybe the car he drove to training in that caused the incident?

How does this sort of thing make it through a modern education system?

Was he even wearing his old number on his back when he did his knee? Any training watchers there to confirm?

Yeah. Numbers mean such a lot - how many "he wifi be an absolute gun" young players have borne #31 in the past 50 years...all going to be the next great savior. Ray Groom - his only Premiership was that of some hick island state to our south.....and one of the Cockatoo-Collins twins......Paul Wheatley was a very serviceable player but never the "next" RDB.

And if numbers do mean anything, what was Ox wearing when he did his knee, did his knee, did his knee? Perhaps he is trying to exorcise a demon??

Numbers mean jack [censored].

Just my opinion..

Or maybe he just sees it as a fresh start.

I think 5 will suit him

Sorry fndee, im referring to the superstition, which is clearly ridiculous.

I get the fact that some guys like a low number, because they might think it makes them more important in the eyes of the management etc, but how is a new number a fresh start luck wise? Its a stick on piece of nylon on his back? What difference would it make?

Nice. Has the talent of The Ox and will make us forget Toumpas immediately

Could have more to do with bad associations that superstition. He's had a serious injury as #26, so perhaps he feels changing his number is good step for mentally getting over it. Not saying that I agree with the superstition, but I can understand why he'd want to change it.

5 is also a way better number than 26.

One number brings him bad luck.

So he gets a number from a guy that had 3 knee recos.

Good luck Christian.

if a superstition and changing his number helps him mentally, it helps him.

there's a certain bloke who wore a #5 and had a succession of knee injuries but his mental resilience got him through to the point where he was a best and fairest winner and a grand final player.

robbie gray, who i know trac has also spoken to over the last year, similarly changed his number post-acl - it's just about a fresh mindset.

I'm pretty sure he was a Collingwood supporter growing up. Fairly obvious why he would pick number 5 if it was available, no matter what club you play for!

He is a richmond supporter because he admired Matthew Richardson.

Better locker between Wattsy and Dawes instead of stuck between the McDonald brothers.

That would be the main benefit of the swap.

I like the symbolism of numbers, but I'd put our new draft picks in the 40's and let them earn good numbers.

Petracca has done sensationally in his rehab, he can have number 5. Good for him, good for the fans.

Players trade there numbers down from a higher one all the time.

some dick on Facebook is making the [censored] bad luck stuff up.

The Ox was my fav player and I always back the wearer of the almighty #5

Glad to hear Petracca has taken the burden that is Ox Jnr.

I always find the "numbers" thing humerous.

As if it has any contribution good or bad to how a player turns out.

If he wore 50 it would make no difference to 5 IMO

Edited by old dee

It would, if you wear the illustrious #5, the weight of the galaxy is upon you! Toumpas failed, Brock did OK, then failed. O.J. Will shine!!!!

However if you mean that the colours make no difference to how a player plays.

Then yep makes no difference.

Colours are only important to us fans.

McLean is the only player who was worthy of the number 5.

I've always maintained that the All Blacks have a small psychological advantage just because of the jumper they wear. And, yes, I know they would be a formidable team in any colour

Correct they would win in white

Correct they would win in white

... or pink!

Though the "All-Pinks" doesn't quite carry the same aura.
