25yrs old 10ml in your back pocket wow no wonder he is having a break down same as clarke but he did 3 clubs in

I don't think that's correct. It's been publicly stated by Liam Pickering (his manager at the time the deal was done with Sydney) that Franklin only gets paid the full amount if he plays the full 9 years of the contract. I imagine it's a heavily front loaded contract, so he wouldn't be getting an equal amount over each of the 9 years, but he also doesn't get the full $10 million if he doesn't complete the 9 years. Anyway, I think the amount he's getting paid is irrelevant to the matter at hand. He may be suffering from anxiety that he won't be able to play for as long as he wants for a variety of reasons, but that anxiety may be as much about being unable to do what he loves as much as (or more) than it is about the money.

Interesting. I didn't know AFL contracts could be structured that way.

In contemporary society everyone has some sort of Mental Anguish going on.

In yesteryear it probably was the same but was not identified as much.

People dealt with there issues as best as possible and carried on,

I'll make one point would 5 million make me happier??

Absolutely!

Would it put me in a better mental space

Absolutely!

Because like most Australians after 25 years of work I'm still chipping away at the mortgage, still have Bills to pay, Kid's to support etc etc

So a lazy 5 Mill would certainly fix me financially and therefore create some space.

I don't know what problems Clarke and Buddy have BUT Their problems may well be of there own making!

After all if "The black Dog" is yowling because of the work or situations encountered then walk away, can't hack the lifestyle of AFL Walk away, Pressure to succeed Walk away!

Give it all away live your life most of us do, lucky if we are able to fund a reasonable retirement!

Does money Buy happiness??

It might not, but it sure gives you a hell of a start!!

Agree totally, I think some people unknowingly mistake the difference between circumstantial depression and biological depression.

Bad circumstances can make anyone feel down, sad and even depressed but our moods generally change subject to improvement in our environmental factors (Job, relationships, stress etc....)

People like Wayne Schwass, Nathan Thompson and now potentially Buddy Franklin feel depressed for no reason other than biological factors, their great environment (Million dollar player, engaged to a model etc...) make no difference to their outlook on life.

And to be fair to people casting assertions, people with mental illness are lot more likely to use outside sources (Drugs, alcohol, gambling) to ease their emotional discomfort then people unaffected by mental illness. It's an unfortunate cycle that way.

A lack of empathy from some on this board isn't surprising but an unfortunate trend I'm seeing a lot more in society lately.

It works in the reverse as well.

although probably not causal, anxiety can be a trigger to epileptic episodes

anxiety can also be a precursor to more serious mental health issues

burning the candle at both ends is certainly conducive to episodes of anxiety

of course this may have no bearing on lance's current condition

In my experience trephining to let out the evil spirits is the way to go.

yes that should do the trick, or just a simple 'exorcism' could also do the trick... & these days with modern science, perhaps they could just drain his blood out whilst on Ice, the cold stuff, & put in someone else's blood ?

that could get those nasty's outa there.

maybe the rabbotts pell, when he comes back?

.......... could shed some light into budds dilemma ? and very likely 10% or the countries mental health issues, caused/helped by narrow mindedness, & people being judged harshly, according to Gods ways ?

not enough cause constant pain & stress... too much causes anxiety of loss. so they can get defensive & suspicious, & intolerant.

Robin Williams and Kurt Cobain were pocketing the sort of money that Buddy and Mitch could only dream of having... your arguments hold about as much water as the pasta strainer in my kitchen.

Robin Williams is a totally different case to either. To my knowledge, Williams was into child support and alimony for a ridiculous amount - as happens in the US. Williams was often outspoken about this, I think he once said alimony/CS "rips your heart out through your wallet". I think there is very little doubt the cause of Williams death. He wasn't a rich man by any means, at least not in the end. I couldn't draw a comparison to Buddy, at least not with Williams. Franklin obviously has his issues, but many of us also have our issues, we just don't have them broadcasted in a public manner, and we aren't public property, and don't face the daily pressures that come with being an AFL footballer in the modern climate.

That is so daft that it is not funny. When you try to say any illness is "purely" something, you open yourself up to ridicule. Vulnerability, triggers, recovery all involve more than any narrow definition of "pure" physical.

Ok-Epilepsy is a mental illness.

Love Kahneman, I use his thinking fast, thinking slow theory in teaching operational decision making. It's wonderful how the mind works at filling in the blanks in high risk/ high stakes, compressed time situations, its unfortunate, that most of the time its wrong.

The mind is extremely powerful-which is the message our coaches are trying to instil in the boys.

We will only win the flag when we think we can.

C'mon folks, the policy on gossip, rumours and unfounded allegations is pretty clear.

Happy to re-open if these claims surface in the main media, but in the meantime, thread is closed.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
