He wasn't given a role to play this year, and his prancing run-and-carry off half back looked downright stupid.

For all those reasons on the field he was utterly worthless to Melbourne this year.

Out of the Melb, Coll and Geel 3 way trade collingwood are miles in front. Varcoe has been sensational this year.

In all seriousness is this one of the best recruiting guru we have ever had? Think about who we have had in the past and you look at Jason Taylor's record and the type of players that fit into the culture and game plan.

Salem, Tyson, Brayshaw, Petracca, JKH, Stretch, ANB, Omac, Vandenberg Harmes.

Now add Oliver who is a future 200 AFL game player and by all reports Weideman who is impressing everyone down at Casey. We also have KPP in Hulett and Mitch King who both should be handy contributors for Casey this year and push for a debut next year possibly late this year.

And just a quick note to finish off, he was part of the recruiting team that selected Ben Kennedy at Collingwood and apparently was a big advocate in bringing him to the Dees.

Wagner and Mitch White are also two who have seen senior exposure too.

Lets not beat around the bush, he has an eye for talent.

We would not have picked this kid in previous years, we would have waxed lyrical about 'ceilings,' 'class,' and the 'need to look at the player who is best 5 years from now.'

I was guilty of it too, but for every Watts I get right(ish), there are half a dozen that don't come on. Extrapolation of teenage talent is fraught and I am thankful we no longer search for that 'light at the end of the tunnel' - because it is a freight train.

He was, as he was for going after Jesse Hogan. But for the 'good' he did, there was just too much bad involved. Not all his fault though, he just wasn't the best at dealing with a group of 40-plus guys at once.

The writing is on the wall for Derek Hine at Collingwood.   Gubby Allen is not back to run women's team and netball for long and Derek must surely be polishing up his CV.

When Jason Taylor was at Pies the recruitment was spot on but has failed dramatically the last couple of years (although injury has played a part).....  coincidence.... I think not.

This bloke is doing a cracking job -  he should be the one we've got locked down on a water-tight long term contract. He gives you hope that although we don't have a first round pick in the draft he'll still find some cracking talent -  a lot like Wells has done at Geelong over the years.

He's been exceptional but like Roos said of the coaching group last night on 360 it's the collective of the recruiting team not just one person.

If a team is rebuilding as we've done it's not only critical to nail the early picks (which we've appeared to have done) it's critical to get very good players from later picks.  It's early days yet but AVB, Harmes, Wagner and Hunt appear very likely to have meaningful careers and the group of ANB and OMac are looking good for the future.  The two Kings and Hulett have also shown promise to date but we won't know about them for some time.

The addition of meaningful players from later picks is critical and looking at Hawthorn they have Duryea, Sicily, Breust and Puopolo all making excellent contributions and all later picks or rookies.  Teams like Richmond and Collingwood seem to be floundering because they just can't get meaningful players later in the draft.

Of course the development coaches have a lot to do with this but Taylor and his group have given them some excellent talent to work with.
