Narrowing down the draft - Dees to pick between 3 mids?

OK so I know this is very very early but Cal Twomey's latest Phantom Draft is out.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-08-20/update-phantom-form-guide

Depending on what happens this weekend with a few games the ladder looks to be somewhat similar at the end of the year to what it is now.

So with that in mind a rough prediction might be:

1. Jacob Weitering - Carlton

2. Josh Schache - Brisbane

Callum Mills will be at Sydney via the acedemy. Jacob Hopper will be at GWS via their academy.

SO

On Callum's board you have left

Darcy Parish

Aaron Francis

Harley Balic

Out of these three who do you like? Or would we look at Sam Weideman to go along side Jesse in the future? Or do we reach further down keeping in mind players will move up and down draft prediction boards?

Doubt Francis will go beyond Pick 3

Balic over Parish for mine

Assuming the wise heads at AFL house grant Carlton an end of first round pick for Henderson, not picks 1 & 2.

Nor, grant Brisbane a pick to go along side pick 2. For either Luenberger or Martin.

Could push us back to pick 7/8

I don't think Henderson is a FA.

Also doubt AFL will grant Brisbane a PP after they just smashed Carlton.

Henderson offers SFA

We should trade our picks plus offers of money for established players. Draft is a lottery, especially this year.

I like Parish, Francis and Balic in that order, but wouldn't rule out Curnow.

I'd take him before Balic and with a good finish to the season, could be on a par with the other two.

I hope we trade our first pick for Bennell. We need his skill and speed on the wing.

I'd also hope we put an offer to Scott Selwood as he would be a great replacement for Cross.

Francis seems versatile but might not quite have the tank just yet for midfield. It's the thing that really separates midfield candidates in the draft. I like that he admires Goddard and Burgoyne. Both classy players who can do a bit of everything. Perhaps what Melbourne needs at the moment. A backman who can impact the midfield? If Howe is to go then he could slot right in with his marking/rebounding ability.

On the otherhand I do like Balic. I guess we will have the wait and see if Petracca can be the midfielder/forward that we hope he can be. Regardless Balic offers similar qualities as a tough half forward who can win the contested ball. Interesting.

Who does Parish compare to? Would it be fair to say he has the highest ceiling of the mids? Best case scenario with his frame being Bontempelli? He seems to love the contest too much to fall as low as Morton type.

Great, so sydney pick up the best midfielder in the draft AGAIN!

who needs the draft when you have feeder academies. what a farce

My thoughts exactly and maybe we could trade down our pick to get him, although his finish of late may push him into the Top 10

I played footy with Callum Mills last year.. there was a game where we were down to the best team in the comp by 25 points and Millsy came on and kicked 5 goals in 10 minutes out of the midfield to win us the game. This guy is an absolute freak! is there any chance at all that Sydney wont be able to get enough points to bid for him? if so, any chance of him slipping to us?

For the uninitiated, tell us about those three.

Francis' clips looked impressive but how big is he?

Fitzpatrick would 'stand aside' from any decision to advantage Carlton in any way for their ineptitude, and their current tanking.....surely ??????

"To protect the integrity of the game".

And, as for Brisbane....how many flags this century? Let then wait a few decades......preferably 5.

Watch Darcy Tucker. Best player in the draft.

Rubbish.

You been spruiking about this all the time. Doubt he will be top 10

we will wait and see, I like Matheison as a smokey...

If you can't run fast and kick accurately we don't want you.

Dees recruiting strategy is 100% 'competitive beasts' now - if we dont trade our picks the person we pick will be someone in that mold.

Wouldn't have minded Hopper if he was available. Sounds like a similar player to Wines.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
