Can we bottle what Daniel Cross has

Featured Replies

Some players will run past him as his leg speed is not as it once was and he will shank the odd kick but every week I go to the football and know exactly what Daniel Cross will bring to the table.

I wish you could bottle his greatest strengths

  • the difference between his best and worst games - he may not be our best player but is always in the top 5 or 6
  • when he gets beaten in a contest or makes a mistake it drives him to make up for it in the very next contest - he doesn't drop his head.
  • his ability to run from the first to the last contest, getting to the right spots and doing the little team things

He may not be Roo's most talented import but surely the rest of team ( and coaches) must look at the way he plays and appreciate his efforts and want to emulate the way he goes about it.

His fitness base is amazing, born a natural runner, and built on it

Also has great footy smarts and just knows what spot to get to. Tough as nails and a great leader. Love me some Crossy

I wonder if we can get another year out of him so far so good

His calmness and ability to hold on and lead when the team is under pressure is amazing

and when you watch him up close he continually coaches the younger guys during the game

Truely a great mature pick up and I hope he goes around again next year. Love to watch a real footy player perform.

Experience and heart? You'd hope his influence would pass it on

He is a very strong mark overhead.

Deserves another year on the list.

Played a cracking game yesterday. Probably his best for us.

I thought he was almost cooked but there is still some Gasoline in the Tank

The amount of intercept marks he took on that backline yesterday was reminiscent of Rivers in his pomp..

Deserves another year on the list for sure if he continues playing this way.

IF he decides to hang them up at the end of the year I hope we can keep him at the club in some capacity. He is a terrific role model for the younger fellas and would be a positive influence going forward as part of the coaching staff.

It's a big call but he's as important a signing as we've made imo. I don't think the senior leadership void should be understated. It was a black hole. Crossy has been fundamental to the resurgence,

He 100% should get another year if he feels his body is up to it. He may not play every game next season but we're not out of the woods yet and he will remain an important cog.

It's his work ethic on and off the field. I guarantee you with no knowledge that Cross knows the strengths and weaknesses of every opposition player he is up against and never for one second strays from his assignments. Every player is required to study their opponents and their game play before a match up, Cross has built a career out of executing those learnings week after week.

I can see him hanging up the boots, but on current form could go another year.

I hope Brayshaw is a sponge and soaking it all in.

Massive player for us. Senior recruiting done right.

If he wants to go again next year, and I hope he does, he will get another contract and probably 20 games next year (injury pending).

He is invaluable.

If he wants to call it quits I hope we sign him up as a development coach.

Brayshaw was amazing in the last Quarter. I thought he had fatigued by 3/4 time

But he willed himself to succeed.

Reminded me of a young Judd.

He hunted the ball

Me too Sir

I thought he was the difference

He tore holes in the Dogs plans.

The kid can play

I shake my head when I consider that was his eighth game and a less number of four quarter games.

Another supporter of Brayshaw, but who isn't. This kid looked the part from his first game and if it needed confirmation we have now got it . Cant think of anyone for a long time that has given such early confirmation of his potential although Vandenberg comes close. As others have pointed out its not just his talent or ability, it is the boy's attitude. Go for attitude every day over talent. You need both, but its the attitude that is the key. The fact that we have both Brayshaw and Vanders firing from day 1 is a bonus.

I feel like Daniel Cross is giving us those 2/3 years we never got when we delisted our last great captain James McDonald? Thoughts?

Spot on Earnest.

Attitude is the most important trait and it is so obvious that our previous CEO who also liked to recruit had no idea about it.

Roosy coached those epic struggles in 2005-6

They were all about relentless pressure and attitude

Schwab looked only at speed....and they all failed.

There is also another kid getting over a knee injury that is supposed to be better Ernie

This is exactly why they got him. A genuine pro - from all accounts there is far more to what he brings than we what see on the footy field.

Yes and hopefully we can get another year in him. I think he has been a great pick up. He really stuck it up the doggies yesterday, with the game in the balance, he won some crucial contest and overhead marks. He has bounced back well from a fractured leg late last year so at his age that's impressive. we may get another year after this and by that time hopefully Brayshaw, Petracca, Viney will hasve leanrt watching the ultimate team player in action.

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
