I had a personal experience at a Hawthorn training session in the late sixties. I was invited to train and was paired up against the thug. He hit me every time I went near the ball. He got invited back, I didn't.

Even side had someone or two like him. He was bad but there were many others including a few that played for us. That was the game then. Most of these guys were playing to instructions. If sides could get away with that kind of violence today they would. Ron Andrews of Essendon was a shade worse than Mathews.

It was great to see forwards within range taking the responsibility for the shot on goal, even if it was difficult, rather than give it off or try a hell-or-glory short pass.

Garlett's banana, Howe a couple of times on the boundary, Hogan from outside 50, even Toump's second goal that just made it (by the way, is it now OK to use the goal umpire as a stepladder if you're trying to touch the ball?) Obviously not all of those were goals. Could it now be a team rule that if you're in range and you think you're a chance, you back yourself & take the responsibility? Perhaps another reason that Ro Bail took the shot himself rather than tried to give it off just before 3/4 time.

Saty, could you ask a forward about this when you're next at training? I'd like to know whether it's a deliberate change, or just what happened on the day.

Team balance, I reckon the games we have won the match committee have the balance right. Go back to changes for the Freo game, few on here were worried about Dunn on the tall forwards, he was getting towelled, some suggested bringing in Fitzy for that balance, it enables Dunn to take the third tall, makes sense.

The forward line, it just hasn't worked with the three talls, Dawes has been ordinary, we revert back to two talls with Howe, all of the sudden we score. Playing two defensive forwards worked, unfortunately the two we played are limited but it worked. The two most questioned players on the wings, both gave us skill and run.

The back six looked good again Garland was our fourth defender, this is the best role for him, add in Cross and Grimes the balance was good.

Great summation of what went right in Sunday. It all fitted in....reminded me of round 1. A TEAM effort.

I do think we won the inside 50 count and apart from the first 10 minutes of the game we were consistently winning the count.

That said, it was beside the point and Hogan, deservedly so, was in the team of the week.

His handpass was exceptional, but his workrate is the thing that impresses me the most, for someone of his height and weight he can cover ground exceptionally.

Props to the goal umpire for hardly budging when a big bloke has just launched over the top of him. I recall footage of an umpire going down like an Italian soccer player when he was brushed....

Well obviously.

But out of all the 3 though id take Martin back.

Matthews is the best player I've seen along with Carey. Was he a thug ? Sure, but he'd be the first player I picked.

His comments on Hogan are pure ignorance and guesswork. Hogan is excellent on the ground and a very good decision maker and handballer. His field kicking is also very good.

Matthews was guessing because he sees Hogan as the prototype hard running power forward who excels as a pack splitter. He can do that too and in time Matthews will recognise the other strings to his bow.

He (and Ted Whitten) would play maybe one or two games a year these days with MRP (yes, even with their inconsistencies) and the importance placed on protection of the head. . An absolute thug.

What about Neil McMullin, a paediatric surgeon now, who had his jaw broken by Matthews in his second game as a 20 year old.

Paul Roos only tells a small portion as well.

Lumumba can't get near it in the midfield. Isn't using the ball well and wasn't great (but not terrible) at half back. We need all the run we can get at half back/wing so he's not going anywhere but he needs to find some form again.

Terrible positioning by the goal umpire. He should've picked which post it was going closer to (in the end went pretty much through the middle) and then got alongside it so he could see the goal line and was out of the players way. I actually hope Roughead is ok because you don't want to see a player injured because an umpire stuffed up.

That said I'm sure the ump was doing his best and I'm not suggesting hanging him for 1 mistake but it was definitely a mistake.
