I find myself agreeing with you this afternoon Redleg

Gawn is in a group of about 30 poor goal kickers.

It's interesting. Gawn has missed the exact same shot on goal against Geelong, Essendon and Brisbane - the last three weeks. It's the one from the left forward pocket.

This shows my ignorance is he a right footer?

If so he is on the best side.

I will let him off on Sunday that was a close to impossible position for even the best kicks for goal .

He's a right footer, so the wrong side for a right footer, but the angle is not acute.

Oh, sorry OD. I'm not referring to the one on the boundary. I'm referring to the one that would classify as the forward pocket, but it's barely acute.

This is exactly why using such a small sample size is flawed. I'm certainly not saying Max won't continue to improve, just that it's laughable to say right now he's as good as or better than Nik Nat, after playing only two dominant games against unrecognised/no named ruckmen and a one very good game against Brisbane.

Sure, in terms of volume of statistical output, there probably isn't a sample large enough to make a statistically meaningful comparison between NicNat and Gawn. That might take one or two more seasons, really. There's also the age factor. Whilst they're only one draft apart, Gawn was very young for his draft year and virtually a year and a half younger than Naitanui. Add the fact that Gawn lost his draft year + 2012, he still has a fair bit of development in front of him.

What I would say is the traits that Gawn possesses and has shown off in game allow you to make a judgement of what he is capable of doing on a regular basis.

His skillset is already beyond a number of experienced ruckman in the AFL which makes him a pretty valuable commodity. If he continues to utilise that skillset over time, then the stats will really just add to his value and allow for a more meaningful comparison between he and NicNat.

Issue with the comparisons are that despite being (potentially) dominant ruckman, they both have very distinct points of difference, which are game breaking.

I rate what NicNat brings, and also think Maxy's going to be a very good player for us over the journey.

Gawn's kicking is far from the disaster it was when he debuted. I believe in Max. We still need to see more of him though, if his knees hold up he could become a genuine top 5 ruckman next year

Yeah, but most people manage to at least kick point from there, not land the ball about 20 metres out from goal ...

Needs a lesson from Fitzy :P

Meanwhile Ollie Wines getting BOGs while Jimmy is struggling in the VFL

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet.

The team obviously knew the kick could go anywhere according to vince's comment.

So why were 't the team planted for the miss kick.?

I've heard from a couple of sources in the industry that Toumpas could be in a bit of trouble at the end of the season. Hasn't progressed, and was given games in a bid to improve his currency. Obviously just rumours at this stage but interesting development nonetheless

It isn't a bash, it is what it is.

This is a a thread about trades and Toumpas is a name which i think should be right up their with the names on the list.

Players either have it or they don't and it doesn't take long to see it. Brayshaw has it, Stretch has it, Hogan has it....all first year players and it is obvious.

Toumpas does not have it. 3rd year player.

Stretch is already doing the role which we got Toumpas for without all of the clangers and leaving his man to kick winning goals.

Coming from a bloke that wants to trade Christian Salem because he gets injured all the time....

Riiiight cant take you seriously

Too busy laughing? :)

Not being rude Monde but don't quite understand your post. If your sources are from within the industry why would they be rumours? Unless they are purely speculating themselves.

Personally I see potential in Toumpas and I hope they persevere .

However with several other players such as vanderburg Salem etc being offered new contracts the fact that he hasn't suggests that he is not a definite keeper for the head honchos yet

I think we have enough duds to offload before we get rid of Jimmy, well unless we get a good trade for him.

and that might be the thinking

I'd be extremely disappointed if Garland was to leave this club.

Apologies, it was a pretty ordinarily worded post by me. I'll try again. I work in football and a colleague of mine is also part of the recruiting team at an AFL club. The information he gave me was that they were scouting Jimmy as they had been made aware that he was likely to be available at the end of the year. He didn't specify as to whether it was through trade or the draft. Hope that clears it up.

We should keep Toumpas. He may well turn into a really good player. He has the right attitude and that may well transform him into a top player in time.

Noted and mentioned!

Again, for how much money? (Keeping in mind the potential compo also)? Would you be happy if the club recruited Garlo for a second rounder on half a mil a year?

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
