MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 8

Featured Replies

I don't like targeting individual players, but on exposed form, a team that includes Grimes, Bail, M Jones, Spencer, Fitzpatrick, Toumpas and Riley is going to struggle immensely. That being said, I hope they prove me wrong. We'll see

Is that like saying your missus is as hot as she was when you first met after you've been married for 20 years?

Yep

Tyson needs to get his MCL right. Would rather he rest up than do any further damage.

Let's hope Riley has improved his fitness and can find the pill. Can't wait for some more spear tackles.

The most interesting inclusion is Fitzy - he's been playing down back all year for Casey but I can't see him playing there on Sunday.

Jack McRae not selected for the dogs (unless he's a late inclusion)

3rd year blues?

Nah wasn't he dropped last week for lack of defensive skills. Go back and learn type of thing

Sad lot

Seven out of twenty two is almost one third.

One third of the team would not be on many list if any.

Final team.

In: Fitzpatrick, Watts, Riley, Hogan, and Newton.

Out: Dawes, Michie, Tyson, Salem, and Stretch.

Any comments Hogans_heroes?

Lets get him

Injuries starting to get out of control a little. I am no expert at all, so seems odd to me Jetta misses his 4th game with concussion, must be pretty serious.

Fitzy is an interesting inclusion.. You'd think his only real likely match up would be Boyd ? Maybe Mcdonald to Stringer, Dunn to Crameri and Garland to Dickson. I reckon Howe might play forward this week if that's the case. Not sure why Tyson has played the last 3 against Fremantle sydney hawthorn... Think he would have been best to rest his knee then and be back against a side we have a chance against

I don't understand Fitzy's inclusion. In the immortal words of Pauline could someone, please explain?

I don't understand it either. There is no spot for him down back, so are they going to use him as a second ruck to run with Cordy or something? Just doesn't add up.

Jack Fitzpatrick. He has had an average year as a "test case" backman. He played 10 minutes last week, got a headknock and went off for the rest of the game.

AND NOW HE GETS PROMOTED. WHAT THE $#/@!

We're tanking lol

If our players had been performing as poorly as McRae that would be getting in the best every week. A lot of talk about his defensive game not being up to scratch but by geez, he gets his fair share of the pill.

Personally, I think the team will be more offensively potent with the Fitz in attack as opposed to motor mouth Dawes.

I hope both he and Pedo hit the scoreboard..

Is Howe going fwd now ?

I'd prefer Tyson to be out and recovering than in and half-going.

Hopefully Michie or Newton can really stand up this week.

Why not both? ;)

We have beaten the dogs once in the last 10 times we have played them......

Just sayin....

We tend to get close though. Even in our darkest hours. We've always given this game a shake. Can't see us getting it under 4 goals now with Tyson out.

Why not both? ;)

not the Melb way id have thought

After the round 1 team was selected I wrote: "I must echo others by saying I feel better knowing that Grimes, Bail and Matt Jones aren't in the team."

Fair to say I'm not confident about this week.

I don't understand it either. There is no spot for him down back, so are they going to use him as a second ruck to run with Cordy or something? Just doesn't add up.

in earlier times I might have suggested that Roosy has something secret tucked up his sleeve, but unfortunately these selection mysteries have generally ended up being just bad calls instead of shrewd coachmanship

Or they are the selections of a coach who simply has no other options. While I don't rate him as a player at all I'll still be hoping Fitzy can have some sort of impact, but if we are having to turn to him so early in the season then it just goes to show how crippled we have been by injuries over the last month.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

  • PREGAME: Brisbane

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
