No it's not. If that was the case, you would have seen mass exodus out of clubs like Geelong and Hawthorn, where players stayed for success rather than chasing their max contract (Ablett and Franklin excluded).

It's only conjecture because Hogan hasn't committed. There's nothing stopping Hogan/Manager committing to the club, and sorting out the financial arrangements at season's end. That will stop the conjecture.

If he doesn't re-sign then that could lead to further players going elsewhere.

I can understand your sentiment but...

Why should he say anything. Let alone tyre pumping like that. 

It's time for doing not saying and I believe that we finally have a core group with this mindset. 

I think we have finally seen our last false dawn (way too many for my liking). Now it's just a matter of the pieces falling into place and building from there.

Yes in the top clubs the players keep resigning for unders as they chase success. And that undermines the so called equalisation effect of the salary cap. I assume this is why Hogan is delaying talks, as he weighs up whether we have the right playing group to go to the next step. Fair enough I suppose but the old school would not be impressed one bit. This is Gen Y or Z or whatever he is I suppose.

One frustration is we never hear from Hoges himself, he seems very media shy. 

Like it or lump it, highly skilled AFL players in the modern era have clubs, supporters and the game itself in a squirrel grip!!  I keep hearing everybody needs to bend over for the modern footballer...lets hope the Dee's and the institution that gives these guys a living gets a good break with Jesse.  This club needs a good break after the last 10 years of rot.

Tbh when I think of it I don't understand why the MFC and hogans management didn't do the negotiation and or postpone it on the quiet and then just come out and announce it when it done rather than all this bull shitz we have to put up with. 

I really do hate the new way contracts are being handled now and the media love it.

They were probably a bit surprised it was such a talking point - so early (the media has been on it for a while). I think its best to put it to bed early in the season, because there will be speculation around guys coming out of contract at the end of the year. That conversation should take centre stage now, and Hogan should get a relatively easy run (media wise), at least till the end of the year. MFC have time, and would be assuming Hogan is going to sign, so we treat him accordingly, and protect him from the media. I think it is the best course of action to come out and declare Jesse will be waiting till the end of the year. Then the media can turn to more immediate players coming out of contract. I don't think it is something we'd do if Jesse was entering his last year of his contract. But in this instance, we need to protect him.

The conjecture is relative to the fact that the club and his management were openly reporting that 'contract extension' talks were underway.

Had that not been the case, we probably wouldn't be having this discussion.

Correct. Surely everybody here knows what type of club we are talking about. Sure, things are looking up, but they were looking up in 2011 also. Hogan, like us, must acknowledge the possibility that the club will fall to bits again and resume regular 100 point beltings. Don't forget that yet again we have another assistant coach taking the reins as head coach in 2017. We don't actually have any idea how we are going to go once Roos takes his dump truck full of cash and hits Hawaii.  I don't think it will happen, but our horrifically poor history speaks for itself. Hogan is in a position to get everything he wants, and no doubt that includes being part of a side that is at least moderately successful for the bulk of his career, so to commit to us long term right now is a bit of a risk. I firmly think the WA/family thing and the money thing aren't his issues, we hold all the cards except the success card.

All I know is that Jesse Hogan is happy at Melbourne at the moment, just like the rest of the team wants success, if we achieve that soon, he will stay
