Happy to flop them on the table with this bloke.

Will be elite.

Doesn't get it enough yet, but yesterday was arguably his best game in the jumper. I loved him last year, but struggled (albeit due to injury interruption) early this season. Wasn't entirely sure whether he would make that elite category or even stay on the park, but yesterday's return has me excited again.

Viney, Brayshaw, Oliver, Petracca, Tyson, with outside support from Stretch and further inside and outside play from Prestia ( ;) ) and we'll have a seriously exciting midfield. They'll certainly know how to win a clearance. It's refreshing to have guys that can win clearances.

So is it to late to rename thie thread Welcome Fatty Fatty

I'm going to take a slightly opposing view - I think he's going to be a good player, not a great player.

Hope I'm wrong.

Looks like McLean and Trengove prior to their injury woes - hopefully a good 200-game foot soldier who'll have the occasional outstanding game but will never be consistently outstanding, if that makes sense.

Needs to play consistently tho, something that McLean and Trengove were never able to do.

Slightly over rated IMO.  Will be a soldier and a very good to good player, but won't reach elite status. He doesn't have one area in his game that is special. Not fast, disposals are ok/good, not a great mark for a tallish mid, not a goal kicker, therefore he is a midfielder only. One dimensional.

I was surprised by his lack of awareness yesterday. At times he had 5 St Kilda players chasing/around him and he was oblivious and was caught easily. I only hope this means he is adjusting to AFL level after a lengthy break.

We have some of the worst supporters.  Give the kids sometime to develop

You're saying based on 1 game he won't be elite.  He has played 20 games of football.  Will be a star!!!!

Quite upbeat about his game. Like the new lean look, the 7 clearances and his passion that showed he cared about his turnover - means he will learn from it. Will be a leader and a 200+ game player.

Things happen when he has the ball. Simple as that. He's still an incredibly exciting prospect. Such a typical Melbourne supporter attitude to criticise a high draft pick 25 games who has been hit heavily with injury and concussion this year.

Watch the Geelong game from last year to remind yourself of how good he's going to be.

Based on what I've seen to date this year, we do not have a gun player and because of the way the team is going, we do not look likely that we will have one in 2017 either.

The closest to a gun is Max.

Poor post. You can't blame supporters for being gun-shy having seen so many failures. What's more, you can't lampoon a poster for saying Gus won't be elite because he's only played 20 games of football and then in the same post say he'll be a star based off the same output. That's farcical.

Viney and Maxy are both elite.

Very strange goings-on on these shocking facebook groups and threads. Some buffoon saying he had a bad game? I know he made a couple of blues late, but before that he had a few plays where I remarked he looked like last year's Gus. Even found a fair bit of the pill in patches and seemed to be moving really well. I'm on the Trengove is done bandwagon, and this seemed completely different to me. A player on the up who's had most of a season away.

His first quarter was excellent yesterday. I know he's a million miles off this level but he reminded me a little bit of Scott Pendlebury with his lateral movement and the way he made his way through traffic. Another six games this year to pick up the speed at the top level and a huge pre-season should set Gus up for a huge 2017.

Brayshaw is a Rolls Royce and I feel for supporters that don't have the ability to see class when it's smacking them in the face.  Someone is even insinuating he's slow.  Good God.

This 20 year old 25 game player will be an emerging star of the game when he's played 100 games and is 24.  He has genuine talent in close, can break away on smart angles and use it superbly off both feet.  He's exceptionally tough and good overhead.  He's everything you want in a midfielder.  Until a player has 30 games under their belt they're really just feeling their way, but some of the things this guy does at his age smacks of a future star.

He, Viney and Oliver will all be better players than Nathan Jones, so the platform for a strong midfield is well and truly in place.

Like Boak and Mundy?

I missed the 1st quarter.

Seems like this is what has impressed everyone so much.
Based on the rest of the game that I saw, he was off the pace a bit.

Even being off the pace, his 23 touches and 7 clearances were both career highs.  After  a long layoff with concussion issues it was a fine return.

Me too. Is superior to Tyson.

Regarding him not getting enough of it: his possessions-per-minute on the ground put him in the top 3 for the game this week.  It's hard to rack up possessions when you spend more than 1/3 of the game on the pine.

This will not be a concern at all when he's playing midfielder-level minutes on the ground.

Everyone defines words differently. Good, Gun, Absolute Gun, Elite, A-Grader, Great. Do I have the order correct?

I saw that too. What a rubbish post. I sometimes wonder what people are doing when they're at the game. Are they watching it or do they only become involved when goals are kicked?

Astounded over the negativity associated with Gus and for that matter the team. Injuries and/or concussion problems aside Gus is a natural instinctive footballer with the skills and the smarts to be a very good player for the MFC.

Where does Jet fit in?

No.

Elite is better than A-grade in my lexicon.

I define elite as someone who has had multiple all-Australians, or at least has one and is projecting to others.

Some may think that B+ players like Nathan Jones are elite, so there's merit in your question.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
