I like Gus but he needs to work on his kicking,particularly on the run. Has an appalling ball drop and you can see the ball clearly wobbling as it heads towards his foot. He is good at kicking mungs that spin fwd not back. Frost is the same. TMac does the occasional one as well as does Grimes. Is it any wonder our guys cant hit targets or turn the ball over so regularly.

It actually really annoys me. Guys like Stynes learned from scratch how to guide the ball to his foot and while not a big kick was a very effective kick. Frawley now has a similar kicking action and is much more reliable so bad habits learned at junior level can be 'unlearned'..

Disagree. IMO his kicking on the run is brilliant, on either side of the body. We saw that on show all last year. Where I'd like to see him improve is having a little more composure inside the contest. This will come with experience and good coaching.

Agreed.

His mistakes are due to being a sub 30 game player and having less time to execute under pressure.  Once he's reached 50-60 games he's going to be a sensational young player.

Yep, agreed. There were a couple of clearances yesterday that he rushed in the same way that Bernie and Jones often rush them. It made them far less effective. But against St Kilda he seemed to take his time a little more, get his head up early and make a more calculated and effective decision.

Can't wait to see him as a player with more games under the belt.

Will be a gun but was horrendous yesterday with his disposal. There was a point in the game when viney (i think) earnt a free kick in the centre and gus had the ball with play stopped about 15 metres away from him. He went to kick the ball to viney and even missed that. Typified his day.

He messed some up but to be fair that was just about on par with every player on our list except maybe watts. Overall I thought he was good yesterday.

I agree with that, but against St.Kilda he also got run down twice.  I think he might have swung the pendulum a bit too far the other way and is rushing.  He'll find the right medium.

I think you're on the money jnrmac!

Another poster has pointed this out previously and they were spot on. Last year while he was involved in quite a few of our goals with his kicking it was always kicking long to space and someone like Garlett running on to it. I can not recall him ever hitting up a target on the lead last season and he still seems to struggle with this kick,

His kicking was exactly like this in the U18 championships and is an area in need of major improvement.

His ability to get penetration quickly out of a stoppage on either foot is a valuable asset.

Yeah, true. Although, I'd argue that against St Kilda inside the contest he was fine, but on the outside he struggled with the pace. But as you say, I'm sure he'll find that balance.

    Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals.
