Post Match Discussion - Round 8

The free against Dunn did not have to be paid in the context of the game. Once again we get shafted by a soft free. It was such a fantastic effort by both teams until then. The umpires had put the whistle away... No, there was still one maggot prepared to take the game on the whistle!

Completely disagree, there was a free there, but it should have been against Crameri for blocking Dunns run at the contest. Crameri should also go for his rough conduct headlock on Dunn. That's something that should not be tolerated by the MRP. L. Jones gone for his disgraceful bump. Who was it that hit N. Jones square in the head (no free kick either), you're gone, and there was another punch in the face at some point. I count four dogs rubbed out for their next match.

Any comment Purple/Jumbo?

Tough loss, really disappointing.

Hopefully by the end of the year these are the games we'll be closing out.

its taken nth 3 years to learn how to cope in all these situations and the bullies havent yet learned,{how to cover all game finishes}.

while we will get those disappointments, often,i dont hink it will be by the end of the year to have the whole list sorted out on the same page,it takes 3/4 years.

Was ours, really was. We [censored] it. We [censored] blew a good opportunity. Yeah we had a crack and all that jazz, but if you don't know how to win when it's in the clinches than you ain't got a hope.

This, we are still learning.

and thats why we cant have too many kids in the team.

Why do we kick to the side and lose the ball? Why can't we kick long though the middle. Jack Watts is the slowest in the league. Need a bomb up his backside.

were not hawth/sth/geel. all took 5/7 years to perfect the keepings off game and delist or fix horrible kicks of the footy.

just saw some people want byrnes/bail/pedders to be dropped whenever we lose.

the gut running of these 3 has been terrific and the box them in game that PR has us playing is very difficult to learn and concentrate on for a whole match.it was inexperience that let the ball out to open field with dunny trying to protect to much ground that was the killer towards the end.

you cant teach every kid this game in 5 minutes and you need hard body experienced players to maintian that game plan.

PR was always gonna bring this plan here and all supporters wanted to not be flogged every week, well hes done it and now we must be patient until players learn the ropes of this plan.

look at how many players are in the ressies learning the plan and will be ready to play to it when their chance comes.i know its difficult, but we need MORE patience.

We play the Dogs again in a couple of months at Doglands.

I hope like hell that this game is burned into the group's collective consciousness and that they are driven to avenge.

I don't reckon the slippery conditions helped the team.

With iffy disposal at the best of time from our backline, it can be stressful.

Howe, take your marks, son - you've got the most beautiful hands in the AFL. Use them!

Howe, take your marks, son - you've got the most beautiful hands in the AFL. Use them!

And the horrendous congestion didnt help either.

The modern game seems to be morphing into a version of rugby - scrum like stoppages, dribbling the ball along the ground and scoring...

How can skilful players make an impact in the middle of a pack of 10 others when weaving thru traffic becomes almost impossible?

How often did N Jones end up with 4 other players on top of him....and not just the opposition.

I am sick of going on about that passenger Byrnes. When he plays he gets a game we are 1man down. Let him top up his superannuation some place else.

For what it's worth, everyone's favourite recruiting journalist, Emma Quayle, gave Watts third best on for the Dees behind Tyson and Cross.

She put Libba and Griffen top two for Footscray.

McDonald wasn't as bad as people are making out. He has a good burst of speed and is still a promising defender.

That moment in the last quarter when McDonald was running to get the ball in the clear but completely missed it was terrible.

Some errors tonight, some preventable, others not

- Dunn on the faster Crameri It's clear we would rather Frawley up forward as he adds more value there for us at the moment. The task would have been to much for Garlo in his first back, Tommy Mc was beaten by a guy on one leg and Pedo was backing up in the ruck a lot.

- Grimes in the midfield - such a no no Clearly there to do a job on Griffen and he went well. He will be back to HBF next week I am sure.

- Playing Byrnes I'm all for playing the better player no matter age, experience, contract status etc so I have always been against 'blooding youth' but Shannon is clearly on his last legs.

- Playing turnover Terlich (who has his good moments) I'd have him everyday over Strauss. Clisby just has to keep knocking at the door

- Tagging Macrae with Cross Loved this. Not sure people here realise how good Macrae has been this year. Will win there B & F. Averaging nearly 30 touches all year and Cross kept him to 15 while picking up 23 himself. Was clearly the best move of the night for mine.

- Expecting Jetta to play a second good game in a row Umm... can't really drop a guy after playing well last week. But I understand your point

- Howe in the air no punching properly He doesnt know how. His whole life has been up forward when he would try grab everything and not worry. Now he realises not grabbing the greasy pill and letting it go to ground will really hurt. Must learn to punch properly or just roll the dice and try grab them all.

- Tom McDonald is just yuck right now Has always been a shocking kick. I think its odd how people here (not you master) can put so much praise on Tommy Mc and give so much hate towards Terlich

- Nath Jones getting tagged out and having no second option For once we did have other options, they were Viney, Tyson and Vince. Jones will cop a tag every week, some better at it than others. It's a sign of respect from opposition teams now that they have to shut some players for us down instead of just rocking up knowing they are in for a 10 goal win,.

- Collecting a bunch of soft frees so the dogs got a bunch of quality inside 50 free kicks Massively hurt. The Cross one where he didnt even dive for the pill and the Dunn one really frustrated me the most

The players had a red hot crack. Against a pretty solid midfield (at least at the top end) we almost won the battle. But our lack of quality from half back and lack of goal scorers meant we couldn't punish the dogs.

I feel it was our game to win or lose and we controlled the game but that we were pushing up hill all night and not able to get reward. Maybe dogs fans feel the same who knows.

A lot to learn from this game.

Jeesus, Mc Donald was flogged by a numptie. To make things worse every time we had possession he'd find a way to stuff it up.

That is the king of meaningless stats. It says absolutely nothing except that one team was seen as having infringed more often. It doesn't tell us whether any of those free kicks were there. It doesn't say where they happened on the ground. It doesn't say which free kicks were missed. It doesn't say whether advantage was payed when it shouldn't have been. And on and on we go.

I agree to an extent but to be fair, if it was reversed (Footscray only had 8 frees to 3/4 time) we would be screaming bloody murder.

The problem being most of our players have no Peripheral vision or football awareness, take Dunn on the kick outs he completely goes to one side instead of starting in the centre of the square to see what is on offer, Dawes leads for 10 meters before it is kicked to him the movement of the ball should have been instantiates, Matt Jones who did brilliantly to run on to get the pass only to not have the awareness of what is around him slow down and make sure of the shot these are only a few examples, but these things will be fixed by Roos and Co as players understand how to play the game. There has been more improvement this year than the past 5-6 years so things are on the up.

Was there to be won and we arent good enough yet. Simple as that. Come a long way , still along way to go

Was ours, really was. We [censored] it. We [censored] blew a good opportunity. Yeah we had a crack and all that jazz, but if you don't know how to win when it's in the clinches than you ain't got a hope.

This, we are still learning.

We were a bit stiff , particularly with that soft free, but in the end we just didn't win a winnable game. Among the members around me, though gutted and angry, there was a definite sense of growing confidence. We actually now do things that real footy teams do. Roos has done some amazing work.

just saw some people want byrnes/bail/pedders to be dropped whenever we lose.

I'm all for minimal changes and I agree with this and hope that there is any, it will be just for injury cover. Who really is there to bring in?

- Blease. No, finally seemed to get a bit of the pill which is fantastic, his challenge now to back it up.

- Clisby. Probably closest.

- Tappy. No, not fit enough yet

- Toump. Let the kid learn there for a while and get some confidence up

- Strauss. No and always will be a no for me as I just don't think he can play

- Mitchie. No, not fit enough yet

- McKenz. Unfortunately for Jordie we picked up Cross and he's a step above.

- Riley. No, not fit enough yet

- Evans. See Strauss.

I'm not willing to bring someone in half done, whether they have a ripping nickname or not, to have a crack in the ones.

So much to everyone's shock and horror we may see another week of everyones besty in Boo-erns

Howe has obviously been told to punch the ball away more. He needs lessons in how to do that and told if he can punch with 2 hands why not mark it.

The guy who had Dunn's head in a headlock should be rubbed out. That was more appalling than something that happens in the heat and speed of the game and could be very dangerous.

I was surprised Roos' made the comment about Terlich not getting a free for having been knocked out. While it was obvious to spectators, we have the 'advantage' of noticing Terlich is on the ground not moving to confirm the fact his head has been knocked. If the umpire doesn't see the actual knock he's not paying attention to the bloke on the ground.

One of my biggest frustrations (and I even made a thread about it last year) is that when Melbourne payers take a mark they are so slow to turn around and look forward.

Sometimes they don't even look forward at all and just kick sideways without having a look at what is down the ground.

I disagree that the umpires favoured us. Did you see the 10 metre kick that was paid as a mark and resulted in a goal? Multiple others. It's about quality of decisions not quantity of free kicks.

24 to 13 FK in our favour. We got a good run out of the Umps. Jones two misses and the two posters, killed us.

Dom Tyson. Wow. Next MFC Brownlow Medalist....

Keep in mind a lot of our frees were for illegal holding off the ball. Glad the umpires picked this up its getting to be a joke in the game.

I missed the game, how was Garland?

Not great but will be better for the run. His spread in backline when we were rebounding was a highlight but his disposal could have been tidier.

Our main failing over the past 4 years has been pretty much fixed - intensity at the contest including two way running.

We have a mix of forward talls. Dawes presenting over again with vicious, physical intent being helped by Pederson, Jamar and Frawley. Hogan to come (hopefully!)

Our backline remains our steady, able foundation who continue to beat or equal their weekly opponents.

We basically lack class, at important moments and most importantly in one on one contests. The Dogs got a heap of easy goals because their class midfielders got easy possessions. Cooney, Dalhaus and Liberatore all had a class that only Tyson showed last night.

Coming off half back Terlich, McDonald and Jetta just lack that polish and finish to ever really set up something special, quick and creative. Likewise for Bail, M Jones and Pederson. This diminishes our forward spread.

Salem, Tyson, Viney and Hogan will begin to change this, and hopefully one of Hunt, Harmes will join in. I reckon Riley and Michie will be more grunt than polish players.

I was shattered by this loss. I really thought we should have won. The dogs had a lot go their way - fluke kicks that just bounced through, a great run with the umpiring and players that stood up when the game was there to be won.

The hit on Terlich really upset me - happened just in front of me and it still freaks me out when these guys don't move for a few minutes. Lucky he landed left lateral. Hope he is ok.

For some reason I felt more upset by this loss than any other game. Still upset this morning.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
