Surely that's by virtue of his role as lead assistant coach?

He's Roos' number 2. That's always been evident.

I understood that he was the Back line coach and essentially had just as much authority as his counterparts, Matthews and McPherson in the midfield and forward lines. While it's common knowledge that he's the longest serving coach out of the current group, it's never been (to my knowledge) sold to the footy public that he's the most senior (or "lead assistant") as you put it and effectively Roos number 2.

Every time he has been asked about it he has said, nothing has changed and I am sticking to the orignal timeframe.

Too much water to go under the bridge yet to speculate. I don't think Roos is going anywhere in the near future. Would be very surprised if he didn't see out his 3 years and by that time anything could happen. Let's just enjoy the present.

Action Jackson said that the successor will be in place by the end of this year however, I'm sure he wouldn't mind going back on his word and announcing that Roosy will be extending his contract.

Although, whilst we all want Roos to stay on, getting a cadet on board as early as possible can only be a good thing and whoever it might be may need a couple of extra years. Lots of scenarios.

Problem has been that we have inexperienced coaches that have been thrown into a cesspool. Little resources and a poorly run footy club with a close enough good enough culture.

Changing the whole culture of the place is as an important a task for Roos and Jackson as the everyday priority of winning games.

I don't think it's as much about the age of Hinkley, Richardson and McCartney but their extensive apprenticeships. Clubs have seen what happened with less experienced coaches (Voss, Hird, Neeld, Watters) and have reacted accordingly. One day it will switch back to fresh young faces when the experienced assistants don't all win Premierships in their first couple of years.

For what it's worth, while Clarkson's idea of a mandatory coaching accreditation scheme seems like a good idea, it shouldn't be necessary. Clubs should realise that it's in their best interests to have a formally trained person undertaking the role.

You are joking surely. Bomber Thompson is completely erratic, and the lowdown is the daily grind. He hates it. This decision will rival Neeld. Ling? Every 2nd word will be "positivity" and his hands will move faster than his brain.

I am glad it was Robinson who was the source. Beer drinking, nail-biting, slob of man with the most predictable blokey cr@p that really represents a waste of my foxtel budget.

If a Roos stays for the 3 years and brings the team to the brink, it would be hard for him to just walk away at that point I would've thought.

I'm not thinking successors either. I'm holding on to hope of Roosy being in for the long haul.

Roos has massive self-confidence and belief in his ability. That is why he took on the poisoned chalice.

Roos has low/no ego. That is why he will hand over the reigns. Handed over Longmire a great list. Will hand over our emerging hardened youngish side to his chosen one.

Every time Roos speaks of the coaching group he make a specific point of how fantastic Jade has been. I have no idea who the club are looking at, but would be far from surprised if Jade is right at the forefront of their thinking.

I am of the opinion that Roos will sign an extension til the end of 2017 after the end of this year when people are starting to really ask where the successor is.

the understudy has to be there long enough to absorb what Roos is preaching, so he can adapt it and go from there.

Melbourne should offer Roos and extension for however long he wants to be there; I'd kind of hope he wouldn't leave the club in a vulnerable position after two to three years.

He's our Sherpa and could get us to the top if he stays on.

I don't think Roos is the type of person to leave something after 2 or 3 years. I just don't think he wants the grind of coach for longer than that.

He may change his mind but I think he will be coach until the end of 2016 and then take a Director of Coaching role (or something similar) from then on.

I am not worried that as soon as October 2016 rolls around Roos will be off in the sunset.

it is quite possible that we could be top 4 or even premiers within three years. If that happens everything changes. Either Roos will get so much satisfaction from digging mfc out of the deep hole they were in and sign on for another three years out of loyalty to the team he has built OR the Roos brand will be worth just so much that that the bigger clubs will pay just unlimited amounts for him like 4 or 5 million a year. It is possible that this is in fact the game Roos is playing. We may be in the long run better off to have a smart young coach trained in the Roos' philosophies under Roos for a couple of years then take over. My tip is that they already have Brett Kirk lined up for this. It makes sense. At the moment he is Lyon's assistant (also trained by Roos), is a great mate of Roos himself and apparently very smart and creative - a lot like Roos himself.in other words a perfect fit. My hunch is that that deal has already been done.
