Ask any Bulldog fans about Daniel Cross being given the flick

They are as livid as we were when Junior got the boot

Wouldnt surprise me if it hurts their spirit like it did ours

They could have used Crossys desire and tackling on the weekend vs Carlton

They missed Cross leadership and inspiration big time on the weekend again

Bulldog fans are still livid!!!!

Big win for the MFC getting this bloke to the club

I think I've said this somewhere else but he has filled a big void in our leadership. A really good get, sometimes we can get lucky.

Cross is on target for our B&F.

Junior didn't get top 10 GWS playing with 18 year olds for memory.

From an on-field-viewpoint, we "missed" Junior because we were so deplorable; and the past looked better than present and future.

From a pure playing point of view, it was time for Junior to go when we told him father time was up.

I hope his body keeps going for another few years minimum. Easily the most valuable recruitment we made in the off-season (and given the likes of Tyson, Vince, Salem and JKH, that's saying something).

I just hope that he has a quiet few words in private to Jack Volts and that Jack has the sense and intelligence to seriously take on board what he has to say.

Getting Jack up and performing to his undoubted potential, whilst a primary responsibility of Jack himself, is also a big challenge for a Roos and the coaching team: having a senior respected on field leader like Cross to back up the likes of Nathan Jones in particular is as some have pointed out like having an on field coach as well as a dedicated tough neve-say-die player.

A superb bit of recruiting.

And my Bulldog mates have said all along from the day he was recruited that he will make a huge contribution to our development - not having watched him all that much in the past I had no real appreciation of how right they were.

If you really do think about it, Crossy is doing something that is unselfish in the extreme and amazingly generous.

He probably knew that he would never win a premiership at the Dees. Of course he would be working towards that goal but he must have known in his heart that it was unlikely to happen while he was a player at the club. He, along with Vince, was bought in to help Jonesy get a chop out in the midfield and the younger mids to develop at their own pace without being burdened with roles that they aren't ready for. He hasn't been playing just to fill in time. You can tell by the effort he has put forth in the first five games that he takes this seriously and this isn't merely a paycheck or some half hearted attempt to get back at the Dogs.

All the respect in the world for Crossy.

I'd love to agree. But I can only do so if there's evidence he could have gone to another team but chose us instead. If we were his only option, it's also a possibility he chose us because it was the only way he could do what he loves doing (and get paid for it). Please point me in the right direction - show me some evidence - because I really do want to agree. It would make his outstanding performances to date seem even more meritorious.

Cross gives 100%. Tackles. Chases. Good skills. in and under. Great addition.

Could we put his head on Watt's body?

Totally agree with the sentiments here. We need to get every player on our list following his example.

we play the Doggies in 2 weeks

Massive chance of a Demon win and the added bonus of some nice payback for Crossy

I'm hoping for the long shot. I'm hoping he can get 4 or so more years out of himself (good years too), play 100+ games for the club and we draft his son Tyler under the F/S rule in years to come.

For all his loyalty and fine attitude the dogs spat in his face, here's hoping he retires a true demon after many more games.

Completely agree with you mate, my boss is a Dogs supporter and he was shattered they moved him on. Fortunately for us their loss is our gain :)

  • 4 weeks later...

With all the improvement to the team, we cant underestimate the influence that Daniel Cross has had on the group on the training track and in games.

This was a great decision and will only look better as the season goes.

Its shows how important quality experienced players are to the side.

Cross has played very well and has done an excellent job for the team nearly every week. He's very courageous and that part alone sets a great example. We could do a lot worse than recruit 1 or 2 Cross or Vince types on a yearly basis. As these veterans reach the end, we can recruit some ready made replacements.

Having 5-7 players* of this ilk on our list can only help build a strong culture. Obviously, identifying these type of players is the tricky bit but if last year's off season is anything to go by, it's so far, so good. Good lists have a mix of wily veterans, young talent on the way up and a strong core group of players aged 21-28. We're slowly but surely getting the right mix.

Not sure about the accuracy of the bake that Cross gave Watts (during the game against Sydney?) but it's no coincidence that Jack has lifted his game a lot in recent weeks. I read somewhere that he's mentoring Jack but getting young players into line would be all part of the mentoring process.

Daniel is valuable in more ways than one and he's been a terrific addition.

*At the moment, we have 4 players who could be classed as veterans ... Jamar, Byrnes, Cross and Vince. 3 are performing very well with Byrnes being the only one who needs to find good form. All the same, it's not a bad strike rate.

Cross is what Moneyball is REALLY about, no slight on Cross, it's just exactly what Roos enthuses..... garnishing un-thanked talent

Im glad he's with us. thanks

Hasn't relied on his pace…never.

Could play for another 3 years if the mind is willing.

Danial Cross is an on field leader Know a few Bulldogs fans absolutley devastated that he was cleared

I think there's a really strong resemblance between Cross coming to us from the Dogs and Junior being 'lost' and reappearing at the Giants.

Similar types of players and, by all accounts, similar quality of human being.

And yes, absolutely it would make sense for Cross to evolve into a part of the coaching group. We'll see what happens in time, I guess.

He is averaging 6.1 tackles per game, a career high.

You can only admire a guy like Crossy. Forget the white. He looks great in just red and blue.

Only my view of course, but I'd take off the rose-coloured glasses and go with the fact that we were either the only ones who offered him another year, or there were a very small number and we offered the best money.

If that's true it only shows how clever we've become. Mind you I think there was another club chasing him.

We've been down the Saints and Lions path, playing all the kids and it doesn't work without some god senior players.

Yours is the typical view of most MFC supporters.

I will restate what I said earlier.

As I recall there were other clubs showing interest. Cross has a strong interest in sports science and I think our negotiations included a future role in that area

A Bulldog mate of mine said that our club would be a better place the minute Cross stepped in the door. He understands why Cross was moved on - essentially it was him or Gia.

TGR is spot on with the McDonald comparison. Junior's time was up - it's just the way it was done that rankles. Although had we known Bruce was going to bugger off we may have kept him on the list

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
