Feel sad for the bloke that whatever it is in him makes him feel he needs to be in Perth and can't manage the routine of AFL footy which I agree is strenuous for a 20 year old but not astronomical.

Sucked in Hawthorn for thinking they could do what others couldn't. There will be one very happy WAFL club right now.

geez couldnt even make it to round 1 of his first season!

I was an advocate of using one of our mid range picks on him (before trades) and I don't think there was any doubt of his potential.

Dodged a bullet for sure.

Another waste of talent but if your heart is not in it what can you do, I can see it changing the way players are drafted though if you have any issues at all you won't get picked up, if hawthorn and there culture can't help him no one can

Very sad.

He put a lot of effort in last year and dedicated himself to being as fit and as ready as he could. But AFL is another step up and the demands will not allow for to many distractions, talent and a good fitness base will get you by in WAFL but if the attitude is not right to give 100% commitment at the next level this is what happens. There were a lot screaming for us to take him in 2012 & again last year.

I watched him very closely last year and while there was massive improvement over 6 months I had no doubt he was not worth us taking him in the first 2 rounds

Just a reminder of exactly what it is that AFL players get paid so much for.

It's not 'being good at football', it's 'being good at relentlessly pursuing excellence'.

Garlett might have to deal with some abuse over the fence, probably with a little edge of racism to it as well (we are talking about the kind of 'heroes' who abuse players over the fence at WAFL games, after all), but he's got a better chance at being happy succeeding in the WAFL without burning out his willpower, and being closer to the other things that are more important to him than top-level glory, glamour and cash.

Pretty hard for the kid.

Comes from a long way back, biggest junior talent I've seen in the past decade.

Hird and Robert Shaw I think it was both expressed views about the demands of modern football on indigenous players.....

He was speculative and the Hawks could afford a bad result.

I think there were a number on here who wanted him at the MFC.

I am still an advocate on not drafting on ability alone. You need rounded footballers with strong character to go with pure talent.

Having said that, it hasn't seemed to do us much good to date.

Wonder what Matt Rendell is thinking right now....

Sure he was speculative, but many here thought he would have had a relapse, and that's the reason they didn't want us to go near him..

Dayle Garlett will have benefited from even the short time he was in what would have been an extremely supportive and nurturing environment at Hawthorn.

I hope it's helped him mature and I wish him well for whatever it is he goes on to do with his life.

How exactly?

he is clearly keen on AFL to nominate for 2 drafts, he is from Perth, playing for either of those teams would mean he could be home and play the game he loves, i don't know where i mentioned anything about him not liking the Hawthorn football club

and me saying i'm sick of the go home factor was just a general comment, AFL today makes it so easy for players to just claim homesickness and get out of the club they're in, which i don't like, means interstate teams would be hesitant to take the best talent all the time

By that I presume you mean the lazy party boy background that likely comes from an unstable home and issues in his background.

I don't see it as an indigenous thing. JKH is probably the most professional kid we've drafted in years.

The main thing that needs to happen is for state league clubs to develop these kids who aren't ready for AFL, they can then get drafted way down the line. 3 dominant years at WAFL level and sorting out all the other crap Garlett could still be worth another shot.

I don't think there's any other team sport in the world who spits 19 and 20 year olds out so early without chances to make it back at lower levels.
