Roos just needed to keep up appearances to ensure we didn't get a booby prize like when Rivers & Moloney left and clearly weren't wanted, despite them having some value.

Fair degree of "crystal ball" there - you are assuming that Rivers is going to go backwards but also a number of footballers who havent shown much are all of a sudden going to improve and go past him.

I think Sylvia will be a great case study of the recruiting vs development argument.

There will be no excuses for him not to perform at Freo, given he will be playing in a very strong team and under a fantastic coach, two factors not present at Melbourne over the last seven years.

If he tears it up for them, it will show us that we have failed to extract the best out of him and not developed him well.

If however his career just ambles along with mostly mediocre performances highlighted by a few standout games, this will help to demonstrate that his time at Melbourne was not severly impacted by poor development.

Jared Rivers, was and still is a massive loss to the MFC, if you seriously think that a bloke can walk into Geelongs back line is not required at the MFC, you're loco. I would have Rivers over, Struass, Terlich, Dunn, Pedo etc any day of the week. He would still be our thrid best back man behind Chip and Garlo

There aren't a lot of viable options. We actually have better defensive stocks overall than Geelong at this point, imho.

Anyway, that's debatable, but it's also a matter of when he can get on the park.

Tom McDonald is a better defender, in terms of being able to run with players and matching them for height.

He may be a dodgier kick, but Rivers was never driving attack from defence himself, only safe sideways and backwards kicks.

Nothing ever ventured, nothing gained.

Rivers also isn't capable of playing the medium sized defender roles of Strauss, Terlich... Even Dunn & Pederson is more mobile.

Just to suggest it shows you have little understanding of our backline and how it functions.

Pedo = spud. Dunn = still iffy. Terlich, Strauss, Georgiou (rookie) all yet to show if they're truly up to it.

Rivers stood up more than enough in a p@*s poor backline behind the worst midfield in modern footy. Not saying he's our best ever backman, but some of the comments about him here are so far off the mark that they seem emotional comments given he's now an opposition player, rather than rational.

Ross Lyon is doing the same as he did to wake up Michael Walters, has the media hounding him and publically making him aware a spot in Freo's best 22 is earned and not a given.

Sylvia will be a good addition to the Freo side and by midway through the season I expect him to be firing

. You may be right but it was def a calculated gamble by freo as they obviously knew the risks. I guess they're gambling they will be able to turn him around and its only costing them money. They must figure they need some more goal kicking power. I always liked col but I have to say I'm glad another club had to worry about his commitment not us.

Agree 'stuie', I think he has been a good player for us. Injury didn't help his cause or ours and I think it may cut him short at Geelong, he's also starting to find it harder to get a good match up. Can't take the monsters and the 3rd tall is getting a bit quicker but yeah he was a good player at the MFC.

A perfect third key defender. Is one of the better readers of the play with his interception of kicks. His major weakness is playing on the gorillas/Trav Clokes of the league.

I think that Col is the kid who was probably told by everyone that he would be a star and it seems he agree with that and thought it would come naturally.

Probably, once upon a time, they would have been right but football has changed so much, just natural football ability and a great smile isn't enough. Hard work is the key and Col just didn't do enough of that.
